It's a New Year with a ton of new possibilities and I am thrilled to be kicking off 2014 with my custom deck of playing cards called Foto Grafis.
The story behind the cards:
Back in May of 2013, I found a design competition organized by the United States Playing Card Company and Bicycle's Club 808. It was a "Design a Deck" contest. I'd been toying around with putting together my very own deck of cards and this seemed the perfect opportunity to gain some exposure. The problem was that I had discovered the contest with only three days remaining until the deadline. I spent the night coming up with a camera-inspired card back and submitted the design. A week later, I got the email notice that I had won! This was a HUGE deal for me and really sparked my confidence to go ahead and dive in - to create what would become Foto Grafis!

The Foto Grafis Project:
As a photographer, I strive to transform the ordinary or mundane into the extraordinary and spectacular. My goal is to fill my images with astounding textures and unexpected depth. It's what I am trying to do with these cards - turning an everyday, ordinary deck of cards into something very special. Pocket sized fine art!
About the Cards:
54 Poker Sized cards printed on premium linen stock. I've designed a brand new system of card recognition that will allow much more room on the card face for my images, yet still make the deck a fully playable and clearly recognizable. I am working with a printer, based in my home state of New Jersey, who is bending over backwards to help ensure my vision of Foto Grafis is achieved.

Now Kickstarter isn't a charity . . . you get a reward for your backing. I've taken this one step further to ensure all my backers feel like their getting MUCH MORE for their support of the Foto Grafis project. I am calling these "no-obligation" add-ons. So which ever pledge tier you choose, each deck will be accompanied with all of the following:
Let's break this down so you know the value your patronage is getting you. First up in this exciting line of "no-obligation" add-ons is the Luxe Print. Really excited to be able to offer this to you. This is no ordinary print - first up, the image is one of my personal favorites and is called Love To Read.
This image is printed in full color on premium Mohawk Superfine paper. To make this print even more spectacular, four layers of this amazing paper are compressed together, with a fifth layer, a black core, sandwiched between the sheets. This print is 32 points thick and worth the price of the deck alone. Each print will be hand signed by me. The edition size of the print will be determined by the campaign and how many decks are backed. Once we lock in that number, any prints over the backer number will be destroyed, ensuring that only Kickstarter backers are the ones getting this print!
Next up is the fully customized poker chip - once again, this is a free, "no-obligation" add-on. This poker chip ships with every deck backed. It's a ceramic, 39mm chip that will look great guarding your cards or displayed next to your Foto Grafis deck. Don't forget to check out the standard add-ons for a cool, black nickle, metal stand you can purchase to help display your chip!
Another addition to your Foto Grafis swag is a custom micro fiber cloth that measures about 6" x 7". Without fail, I'll have 2 or 3 of these things in my camera bag at all times. There's usually a few in my car, too. In this tech-infused world we all live in, these devices keep getting grungy and streaked. What better way to keep them neat and clean!
Last up, is the 3" Foto Grafis Sticker - and who doesn't love stickers?!? My daughter comes home from 4th grade with a sticker and it's made her day! So I hope this thick, vinyl sticker with a UV coating might make your day when you get your pledge rewards.
Why do I seem to be giving so much away? Well, because I believe in giving back and this deck couldn't be made without you! So I want you to not only get a great deck of cards as a reward, but for you to really know how much your patronage means to me with these free, premium gifts.
Of course there are the standard add-on pieces that you can purchase in addition to your pledge tiers. These include additional Foto Grafis decks, Foto Grafis Card Guard/Coin (click here for high-rez image) Poker Chip/Card Guard display stand, Uncut Sheets and a handsome, black lacquer, display box engraved with the Foto Grafis logo.
See an image in the deck that you just have to have hanging on your wall? Now, you can get any image from the Foto Grafis deck as a beautiful 12"x18" canvas wrap. These canvas wraps are simply stunning and come, ready to hang, right out of the box. They are a solid backed canvas, so they are sturdy and finished off with a clear, acrylic coating that gives the image durability. I'll sign each of the wraps on the finished backing. At the end of the campaign, there will be a survey sent out where you'll be able to choose which image you wanted for your canvas wrap add-on!
This new add-on is designed as a set of 11x14 inch prints. Each print is reproduced on Kodak's amazing Professional Metallic Paper and has an archival lifespan of 200 years. All four prints will be hand signed and housed in a special PMK Portfolio. You can choose to keep them in this portfolio or mat, frame and hang them on your favorite wall!
To add these on, Click "Manage your Pledge" and tack on the amount of the add-on material you are looking to acquire. At the end of the campaign, I'll send out a survey and you'll be able to let me know what add-ons you choose.
As the campaign progresses, I'll be sending out updates that will take a closer look at each of the add-ons, both the freebies and the standard "purchaseable" add-ons.
Always thinking ahead - and always hopeful - I've come up with some Stretch Goals to add further value to your patronage. The first goal breaks at $3,800 and when that happens, all backers will be rewarded with The Making of Foto Grafis eBook.
This eBook will be view-able on all computers, smart phones, and your tablet of choice. Within the pages of The Making of Foto Grafis, you'll get a high-rez look at the award-winning images featured in the Foto Grafis deck - in some cases, you'll get a look at them in full color as they were originally shot. You'll get some unique insight on your favorite cards as I'll be giving you the "what and where" each shot was taken. A neat way to find out more about your favorite images.
The next stretch goal breaks at $4,000 and will truly make your Foto Grafis deck a one-of-a-kind collectible!
If we manage this goal, I'll be shipping a security enhanced, holographic sticker - custom imprinted with the Foto Grafis name and a one of a kind serial number - with your deck. I'll also take this one step further and hand number each of the accompanying Luxe Prints to match your given serial number.
BRAND NEW STRETCH GOAL!!
I've been trying to come up with a stretch goal that will not only be financially responsible, but also be of some practical use. At first, I thought I might do some custom USB drives - but the price point just wasn't there. Then I thought of doing some of those silicone wrist bands - and realized I have dozens of those things and never really wear them.
As I am scrolling through my iPad, it finally hits me - The Foto Grafis Ballpoint Pen/Stylus combo!
I am a crazy note taker - if I don't write something down, it doesn't leave a lasting impression on my brain and all is lost. So a pen is never far from my reach. And I do a TON of photo sorting and image processing on my iPad - for which I have a great little stylus to assist - and now you can get your Foto Grafis Pen/Stylus as part of your pledge if we hit the very realistic goal of $6,000 by the end of the campaign!
If you've been on the fence about snagging a Foto Grafis Coin or maybe an Uncut Sheet, now's the time!! We're at 23 days out and at 142% . . . we just need $1,500 to hit our next goal. We do that, every deck ships with the new Foto Grafis Pen/Stylus!
So here's where I ask for your help . . . of course, the biggest way you can help Foto Grafis become a reality is to pick your pledge tier and back the project. Have a look on the right side of the screen and pick the tier that's the perfect fit for you! Aside from your patronage, you can also help by spreading the word about Foto Grafis. I've created a special "Badge" for you to share on all of the Social Media sites out there . . .
Almost equal to your pledge, you're helping to spread the word about Foto Grafis will go a long way to making this project successful. If you know a blogger or other news outlet that might enjoying telling the story of Foto Grafis, by all mean, tell them about the project. It's a very exciting time and I am so very glad to have you all along for the experience . . . it can't happen without you!!
Risks and challenges
As with any project of this size, obstacles are bound to happen, but with over 20 years in the publishing/graphic design industry, I know I can produce these cards with little or no hiccups on the production side. I've done books for companies like Ford Automotive and movie posters for Lucasfilm. To me, nothing is more important than putting out a quality project - especially one that my name has been attached to.
I think the biggest challenge facing this project is the actual delivery of the cards to backers. I've been doing research on how others are sending out their cards to avoid damage to the decks during shipment and think I've come up with a way to get these cards in your hands in pristine condition!
As far as risks, there are none that I can see outside the obvious - I'll be crushed if this project doesn't achieve its final goal. But that said - if we achieve our goal, the cards will be produced and find their way into you hands in the time allowed - deadlines are something I live by!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
