The wonderfully amazing success of the original LightBox Photography Cardscampaign was a game changer for me. To reach nearly 2,000 backers and help inspire creativity around the world - well, there are hardly words to describe that level of elation. A follow-up deck was just a spark of an idea when the first LightBox deck debuted on Kickstarter in January of this year - the positive response for the successful project fed the fire and I am very proud to bring to Kickstarter the next deck in the LightBox Photography Card Series: Macro Edition!
As before, this deck offers up 52 photo challenges, this time geared towards all you close-up/macro aficionados. Each card drawn will issue a challenging subject, offer up a bit of advice/wisdom/aimless meandering and highlight some gear you might find useful. Below the challenge will be a sample image showcasing how I went about fulfilling the challenge. You can use this image as inspiration - or go in a completely different direction - the choice is yours!
Many of the subjects featured in The Macro Edition are objects for which you won’t have to stray too far from home. Part of the excitement of macro or close-up photography is telling a story on a smaller scale . . . This was a particularly fun project for me as I tend to shoot super wide, so coming up with the challenges was also pushing my creative boundaries! Also - and please read this - these cards are for ALL levels of shooters - whether you're a gearhead with the latest and greatest or a cellular photographer with a magnifying glass! The images seen on the card faces are captured with all manner of camera - DSLR, point-and-shoot and cell phones!
Once you have your shot, you're welcome to share your image on one of the many social media outlets on which LightBox has a presence. Get comments and critiques from the many LightBox users out there! I am always excited to see how the cards are being used, so I am usually one of the first ones to offer up a comment or two!
One of the pledge tiers I am most excited about is the "Education Ambassador" tier. For your support of $100, you will get 10 decks of LightBox Photography Cards . . . in addition to your rewards, I'll be sending you an additional 10 decks for you to distribute to your favorite school, camera club or photo enthusiast. I do a lot of talks at high schools about photography and it's just about the most rewarding experiences of my career. Pledging for this tier will help me help YOU spread the joys of photography into your own community!
Some bonus content! Included with each deck of LightBox Photography Cards: Macro Edition will be a 3-in-1 Grey Card to help in your white balance workflow. There will also be a focusing card! This card will assist you in making sure your focus is tack sharp! You'll utilize this card in your pre-visualization practices, placing it in your composition, snapping off a shot and making sure the lines, curves and letters are as sharp as you'd like them to be, ensuring that your subjects will also be sharp!
Now let's get down to the fun stuff!! Stretch Goals!! Many of you who backed the first LightBox deck were thrilled with the freebies offered up as stretch goals . . . and they are back! Some the same . . . some freshened up a bit for the new deck!! I am going to reveal the first two stretch goals on launch - then move on from there!
Use this handy, dandy little bounce card to modify your lighting. Fill some shadows with the pure white side or use the branded side to ward off unwanted light. This 30mil (0.762 millimeters) thick durable plastic bounce card will ship with your cards, one to each backer, if we hit the $6,000 mark!
If we hit $9,000, every backer will get one of the very popular pen/stylus combos. These have proven very, very popular in my last two campaigns and I am happily bringing them along for this campaign too!
When we hit $12,000 during the campaign, the LightBox Macro Lens Bands will be unlocked. These were a runaway hit during the last campaign and I am happy to bring them back in an all new color! These help identify your gear at a glance, especially when you're out shooting with other photographers with the same lenses! Once we hit 12k, every backer gets one lens band for free! You'll also be able to add on additional Lens bands for $1.00 for both International and Domestic Backers!
Another wildly popular stretch goal from the last campaign was The Virtual Edition! It's back for this one, too . . . if we reach $15K, I'll be releasing a virtual edition expansion pack in the form of a downloadable PDF . . . from there, you can upload it to your smart phones, tablets or computers . . . best part, this deliverable will be yours in November!! 12 new macro challenges only available on this exclusive download! So you can get started on your Macro Photography adventures sooner!
And now for the Add-Ons! Backers can add on as many decks of LightBox Photography Cards as they wish. Here's a link on how to mange your pledge and increase your funding to cover your add-ons. I’ve offered up some group packages but, in an effort to keep things as simple as possible, backers can add on decks for $9.00 (International backers please add on $2.00 for each additional deck to cover overseas postage). The photo below showcases additional add-ons, which I'll go over in more detail below the image.

I'll be showing off the actual products during campaign updates - many of these add-ons are already in hand and I am just thrilled with how they turned out!
So that's going to do it for the launch of LightBox Photography Cards: Macro Edition! Keep an eye out for campaign updates and all the fun stuff that goes along with a crowd funded project. We're shooting for a February 2016 fulfillment - that's far enough away to account for any issues in production (and stay away from the holiday postal madness) and to accommodate a lofty stretch goal that I'll be announcing in the next week or so . . . Thank you so much for your time and consideration . . . There are so many options to learn the craft of photography and I am so grateful for the opportunity to add my own unique take on this wonderful, creative outlet of ours . . . it's such an exciting time!!
Risks and challenges
As with any project of this size, obstacles are bound to happen, but with over 20 years in the publishing/graphic design industry, I know I can produce these cards with little or no hiccups on the production side. I am partnering up with the amazing folks over at AdMagic (http://www.admagic.com), who made my two last projects, Foto Grafis and LightBox Photography Cards, and am thrilled to be working with them yet again! To me, nothing is more important than putting out a quality product – especially one that has my name attached to it – and I know the team at AdMagic feel the same way.
I've learned a lot from shipping out the first LightBox deck and will again be using U-line boxes to ship out all rewards and minimize any potential postal mishaps. While this does cost a bit more, shipping with U-line boxes proved very effective during the first two campaigns with not a single deck damaged en route!
As far as risks, there are none that I can see outside the obvious - I'll be crushed if this project doesn't achieve its final goal. But that said - if we achieve our goal, the cards will be produced and find their way into your hands in the time allowed - deadlines are something I live by!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
