A video game, where insects are herding cattle, extinguishing fire, delivering packages, fixing plumbing leaks, exploring space...
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sat, February 16 2019 5:14 PM UTC +00:00.
Have you ever seen a swarm of flies trying to deliver a fridge to the 4th floor? It is hilarious!
Bug Academy is the only school for insects in the world! It's also a training center where insects become faster, stronger and smarter. Through a series of lessons and exercises, they are trained in various life situations such as herding, extinguishing fires, delivering packages, fixing plumbing leaks, space flight and many more. In addition to practical classes, there are also artistic classes, such as playing musical instruments, painting or dancing.
Bug Academy is a crazy action video game with tons of unexpected situations and joyful chaos.
You control a group of insects and navigate them through a series of classes trying to perform given task as well or as fast as possible. Tasks are varied and they focus on training insects in human jobs. That's why you'll see such weird thing as flies trying to deliver a fridge or fireflies working in mines:
Many types of insects attend Bug Academy. Despite similarities, they differ from each other - they have different strengths, weaknesses, different special abilities. Each requires individual approach and specific classes focused on improving their individual skills.
Thanks to their small, prehensile paws, they can lift objects. Single fly may be small and weak, but together, as a team, they can carry big and heavy objects like a refrigerator, a washing machine or even a cow.
These cute, little bees are led by their beloved Queen. They are devoted, hardworking and will do everything that the Queen commands - gather nectar, build a bridge, repair a leaking pipe or wash plates.
With their glowing butts they can illuminate even the darkest corners of a room. That's why they can work in places, where no other bug would, like mines, sewers and even space!
More bugs are coming. Not all classes are finished, some need to be refined, others are being developed. We're working hard on preparing more activities for more insects.
Bug Academy is divided into classes. In each class bug have to perform specific task. They are evaluated based of how good they performed, for example how fast they extinguished fire, how tall tower they built or how much mail they sorted.
There are many varied activities focused on improving bugs strength, speed, coordination, mental capabilities, social skills and sense of art. For example:
- herding cattle
- working in the shipping department
- sorting mail
- working as firefighter
- playing musical instruments
- art lessons
- preparing meals
- building bridges
- and many more...
At the end bugs will be tested in Final Exams - challenging exercise that will require all the skills that bugs have acquired during training.
Here are the descriptions of the rewards you'll get for backing this project:
Digital version Bug Academy (Steam key), available in Q4 2019.
Digital demo available during Kickstarter campaign.
Digital soundtrack an digital wallpapers.
I will put your name in the credits.
I will put your picture in the credits and in the game, as a prop. Small miniature picture (resolution 256 x 256) or bigger portrait picture (resolution 512 x 512). I reserve a right to put a smile on your face!
Name a bug and give him (or her) some of your personality.
Hats! Everyone loves hats! They are very stylish and also very useful for multiplayer mode to distinguish which bug belongs to who. You can design such a hat.
We will work together to design a map. You'll give the idea, draw layout or just write a description and I will create a level based on that. Your name will also appear as the creator of this level.
My name is Jacek "Igrek" Perzanowski. I'm an indie game developer from Poland. I created studio called Igrek Games
I've been making games since 2010. My biggest game so far is Blosics, a game about blocks, physics and joyful destruction. It's been played more than 40 milion times on the web and downloaded over 2 milion times on mobile devices.
Bug Academy started as a jam game. It was called Flies and I created it for the 10th Anniversary Kongregate Game Jam. It received 2 awards: most innovative and best audio.
Since then I've been working on improving the game. I switched to 3D (2.5D to be precise), I improved graphics, created more bugs (insects, not bugs in the code), more varied tasks. All of this I've been doing after work, in my free time, day after day, balancing between work, family time and the game. Finally I decided to take a risk and quit my job to fully focus on the game.
I can finish Bug Academy on my own, but while working on it I realized how much potential it has, how much bigger and better it could be! For example:
- Even more bizarre tasks - hunting ghosts, participating in medieval battles, getting into a computer through TRON-like device and removing viruses from the inside, space battles, possibilities are endless!
- Additional modes, like multiplayer - instead of taking control of a swarm of insects each player controls only one, then you'll have to work together to achieve your goal, or against each other on competitive levels.
- and many more...
By helping me financially you'll give me more resources, and therefore time, to work on the game, adding new features, polishing it. Also it will allow me to hire professionals to help me with aspects of the game that I can't do or are time consuming for me - like music or 3D modeling.
By giving me feedback, writing comments, telling suggestions you ensure that the game will be fun and entertaining. Because first of all I create it for you. A game means nothing if nobody is playing it.
Let's make Bug Academy great!
Risks and challenges
Each game project is an individual case and there is always risk involved like meeting deadlines and insuring quality.
However, I have been forking as a programmer for more than a decade. I've been creating games since 2010. I created and shipped several games already. Therefore you could say that I'm experienced developer :)
Bug Academy is my biggest game so far. There are several new things I've learned during its development and I'm sure that there is still more. I'm not afraid to take the challenge and I'm sure that I can finish this project.
