Yooka-Laylee Trailer & Release Update!

After months of toil and tease, we’re delighted to finally reveal to you the Yooka-Laylee E3 2016 trailer!

.
As well as revealing the first gameplay, this video also confirms that, after long consideration and knowing through dialogue with our backers that they value quality and polish above all, we’ve made the difficult decision to lock the release of Yooka-Laylee to Q1 2017.

While we felt confident we could ship the game in October as originally projected in our Kickstarter, the Playtonic team has decided that it would prefer to add a few extra months’ polish to the game schedule.

Ultimately, this will allow us to deliver a better game to the tens-of-thousands of you who’ve supported us throughout development. And that’s what we all want, right?

We’re sure some will be disappointed by the prospect of a few extra months’ wait, however the team is confident that we’ve made the right decision for the game and that you’ll be pleased with the results when Yooka-Laylee arrives early next year.

You can see via the new screenshots on our Yooka game page what we've been able to achieve in just one short year and a few extra months will ensure that our maiden voyage is an even more impressive one come the day we dramatically sail into port.

From now until the end of next week, don’t be surprised if you see more Yooka-Laylee coverage appear on your favourite sites and video channels – and the Kickstarter Toybox experience is still planned to arrive sometime in July.

Thanks again for your support. We hope you enjoy the trailer - and see you at E3!

Polish is what makes a good game into an amazing game. Please do your best! And like aaron said... please don't pull a Mighty No. 9... :p

    3. TarzanEng on

Quick question. What happens to Toy Box? It has already been more than 6 months delayed.

    4. Daniel Radtke on

@Daniel This is the first delay for the final game...

The original estimated release date was October, most kickstarters never release on the time they say...

I am disappointed that the toy box was delayed but whatever... The game still looks amazing!

      Daniel on

Just please don't delay this again. The fact that you're only saying "Q1" and not giving a specific date worries me a lot.....

    6. The Basement Dwellers on

I knew this would happen since the beginning, and I'm completely fine with this news. Just don't pull a mighty no. 9...

A few extra months for the Playtonic signature amazingness and perfectness? I can wait!

I might be at E3 and my boyfriend will be! Hope to see you there!

The visuals are gorgeous. The scene toward the end when YL are flying high and you can see the whole stage, took my breath away.

well that should be labled with NSFW because that was sexy

    11. Slawikaruga on

I don't mind waiting but until then my WiiU will have become a brand new NX! Any chance to see it on the new console?
BTW, I definitely LOVE this trailer! And the music...

Unity doesn't run like crap on consoles, there can be guys which can make unity run like crap anywhere, but that's not a rule, is up to the developer. Unity is also being used for the wii u version, so if you generalize by saying that unity runs like crap on console (wii u is a console that happends to have less raw computing power than ps4/x1) then it should also run like crap on the wii u. I don't think a "port" is going to be necessary, as unity runs natively on x1 and ps4, is more like team 17 will get the pc version as base, and they'll be in charge of adjusting minor stuff to get it running on the ps4 and x1 kits.

Trailer is awesome.saw it on youtube on the Sony channel.

Works for me- a delayed game can be good, but a rushed game will be bad forever (to paraphrase Miyamoto).

      Looking forward to seeing more!

@-Darkwing- unity run like crap in consoles + external team porting the game = massive disaster

Looks brilliant! But I hope there is more use of Yooka's sticky tongue and curly tail as the game progresses, seeing as how he's a chameleon and all. There is A LOT of gameplay potential there. Anyway, I love how Yooka's accents change color depending on the power-up. I'm a little surprised at the Mario 64 references to the invisibility and metal skin...but I guess that's part of the nostalgia piece of this project. Also, that rolling section in the ice area, I wonder if the platforms are too narrow for the speed, but I'll have to wait and see. I really like what I see overall, though. It's easily one of the most fun-looking games I've seen in a while. I mean, we're talking a game that already looks like it's in the top ten of games released over the last seven years for me, and I'm not easily impressed. Keep up the fantastic work, and no worries about the delay! All things considered, you've basically made some magic here! Kudos to your team's work ethic.

Amazing! The nostalgia of playing Banjo Kazooie all those years ago has come flooding back! Never thought in a million years we'd get a proper sequel to the series but here it is in the form of the spiritually fanbacked Yooka-Laylee! Can't wait!!

I think it will be essentially the same game, but you choose to be mad over something that shouldn't bother you...

      -DarkWing- on

Hey guys, keep up the good work, no one with a bit of knowledge of the software industry was expecting a release this year, i have to say that i'm blown away by the game looks, it looks amazing and i'll go further by saying that it even looks ahead of schedule. I'd love a phyisical retail release of the game for the console (wii u version as well), can you turn to see limited run games to see if that would be possible? Probably could be done by team 17 as well.

You all are being far too apologetic: It's only a few months. You're from the YOLO days when games were churned out in no time. Under 2 years is incredible for a team this size making a game of this caliber, and the trailer confirms for me that it will be scores better than the majority of the crap out on the market that spent way longer in development. Your backers were never entitled to this expediency, and I am more than grateful for the value I'm going to get for my meager contribution.

Thank you so much for working to revive a dead genre that no one asked to go away. I haven't anticipated a game this much in so many years.

I am now officially SO hyped about this game! It looks and feels absolutely perfect - and that little snip at the end, Priceless!!!

      However...
Is there any way of changing which version I get on release? I originally chose ps4 but watching this, I'm feeling so nostalgic and now want to switch to the WiiU?

    30. Mary Moore on

Looks fantastic, don't mind the wait. The Toybox should be out just in time for my birthday, it's the only presie I want. Keep calm and carry on the good work.

Is it possible for Yooka-Laylee to be a launch title for the NX? Should be releasing around the same time.

Incredible guys. Keep up the fantastic work. I have waited a long time for this so what's a few extra months? I have faith in you and I can't wait to play this. Thank you so much for your efforts and your communication (and lack of, when avoiding to completely spoil the game :))

Guys. This looks amazing!!!! I kept my eyes open for tell tell signs of 'impolishment' but I didn't see them. It looks and feels like Rare. It's amazing. The hoops have eyes! The sounds are correct. Thank you SO much for all the work you have put in so far - and for taking even more time (into 2017) to continue to improve it. I backed out of the higher tiers of the kickstarter at the last minute (personal budget concerns) - but from what I've seen I'm excited about purchasing and experiencing the game!

    47. Corey Shaughnessy on

While I would normally send death threats for a thing like this, mom gave me my allowance, so I'll let it slide.

    48. Sam Kim on

I'm actually happy to hear that you guys are taking more time to polish the game.
Please take the time to make something you guys can be proud of, I hope to see Playtonics grow and become a stable game studio.

    49. Elsdrake on

and this is how you make a trailer....GIVE ME NOW...GIVE TO ME...pls?

    50. Luke McDaniel on

Yes it will be aggravating to wait a few more months, you're at least telling us ahead of time. I'm on another right now that's over a year late, with little to no communication, and they wait till they're past each new deadline before speaking up. They're also only doing a partial release(as opposed to what was promised) because they didn't have a fully working product. They are why I hate kickfarted, you are why I keep giving them another chance.
