Kickstarter Exclusive Character Art!

Happy Friday! Allow us to rein in the weekend by introducing you to two of the latest characters in the Playtonic universe; the hapless, multi-limbed scientist Dr. Puzz and her traitorous former colleague Dr. Quack!
Fits the bill.
Fits the bill.

In Yooka-Laylee, Dr. Quack is a ruthless, exosuit-wearing fowl, who’s making the best of a bad situation under the corporate rule of Capital B. The good doctor wasn’t always this unpleasant, but the ruthless takeover of his Quack Corp organisation has persuaded Quack to concoct all manner of crude inventions to satisfy the demands of his new boss – and the shareholders, of course.

Experiencing tentacle problems.
Experiencing tentacle problems.

Quack’s sweet, naive prodigy, Dr. Puzz proved far more morally rigid than her former colleague, breaking ties with Quack Corp as soon as the exosuits started stirring – and taking her own inventions with her. The tentacled technician – designed by Ed ‘Mumbo Jumbo’ Bryan – is the gateway to all of Yooka-Laylee’s wild and wonderful transformations, which we’ll be revealing in the near future.

In case you missed the hoo-ha last week, we unveiled the first Yooka-Laylee screenshots from the game’s final form and laid out our plans for the coming weeks.

Soon you’ll see eyes-on reports of Yooka-Laylee appear on your favourite online channels and video platforms, quickly followed by the hijinks of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

In the meantime, for readers of Edge magazine it's published an eyes-on preview of the game which you can view in print and digital editions. Look forward to more Yooka-Laylee content soon – and thanks for your support.

Dr. Puzz weirds me out a bit. For starters, how the heck does she keep that water in her upside down bowl of hers?
But on a more serious note, she doesn't exactly look like she belongs in the universe of Yooka-Laylee. There is something distinctively not-Rareware about her (can't think of a better description). It's an ok design, but this game is supposed to recapture the magic of Banjo-Kazooie, and Dr. Puzz just isn't doing that for me. Maybe if she was a full-on octopus in a glass bowl attached to a robotic body I would like it more.

Dr. Quack is both clever and disturbing. It's not what I was expecting, but I can see the dark humor in it, and I think it can work. Dr. Puzz is just kind of disturbing to me. I'm not really liking it at all. But this is a small part of the overall package, so I'm not too worried, and creative freedom must be considered. Thanks for the update!

Dustin Jackson's redesign is pretty cool! Well done man.

    4. Miluette on June 5, 2016

I have to say, honestly, that the character designs from the last several updates have been so grating on the eyes that I kind of wish I hadn't pledged. I had high hopes when I saw Yooka-Laylee at first -- their designs are so cute and pleasant that they got a lot of fanart right away. The environments so far look great, too. That's really all that I want -- something cute, and pretty, and fun to play that isn't overblown, just like the original Banjo-Kazooie. I don't think any design from the old games looked as bad put up aside the main characters.

I really dislike Dr. Puzz's design. It doesnt seem to fit in with the rest of the characters, maybe due to her main focal point being human.

I kinda agree with Robert. 1. it looks a bit like some kind of Cronenberg-esque Body Horror creature and second it kinda breaks that whole animal-universe for me. And somehow her shadowing or rendering or whatever doesn't look that good for me as well.
I mean, maybe Yookah Laylee builds up a universe that makes her fit but at least it seems too odd thinking about the BK-universe.

Is she the only humanoid character? I feel like it would be better to go full human, if you are going to include human facial features, like bikini girl in banjokazooie. It just seems more fantastical having a full human character surrounded by talking animals and foreign creatures. They seem more rare and unique that way

    8. Derek Tucker on May 31, 2016

I really don't like Dr Puzz's design. Having a human head in a fish bowl is really bizarre.

Like others, I feel that Dr Puzz's design doesn't fit like the other characters, the face just seems to human, and seems a bit confusing, wouldn't the fishbowl make more sense if Dr Puzz's head looked more like a sea creature (not counting the neck tentacles here), a human head needing to be in water just doesn't seem right.

    10. Spencer Mepham on May 30, 2016

Love Dr Quack just not so sure about Dr Puzz her design seems odd

Gonna chime in with the consensus to say Dr. Quack looks fine (not exactly inspired but good enough) and Dr. Puzz's design confuses the heck out of me. When I saw the art from last week, I thought her design was just the head in the bowl + what now seem to be chin tentacles. The proportions were off (tentacles seemed way too small relative to the head) but otherwise it was ok. Seeming the full picture, with the human-like torso makes it seem a bit like a mess. Like two + characters jammed together. Was that what you were going for (like she fell in some mutagen or something)? If not, why does she have chin tentacles + arm tentacles? Not trying to be a hater - I'm just confused as all heck. Splatoon handled humanized cephalopods much better IMO.

      Yes to the octopus

Cornelius and Dustin had some great points for their redesigns. Although I think you might be able to give her outfit two larger sleeves and have two tentacles fit through it and she could use them together instead of giving her hands, this could justify not increasing her leg tentacles that much if you wanted them to match. Also I don't really care for the hair, I liked Cornelius's idea for tentacles working to give her hair some length, but I think just letting her hair float around in 6 very short wavy strands to give her a bit of a messy look would be cool, especially since her head is in water and I think it's unnatural for it to be so maintained while so.

I have to agree with the masses that Dr. Puzz's design is hands down my least favorite so far.

    15. Dustin Jackson on May 28, 2016

Something I didn't even stop to think about, though.

If she's in charge of the transformations, maybe she looks so freaky because of a transformations gone wrong?

I think if that were the case, then I'd be okay with the weird design. I respect Ed a ton and I'm sure he knows what he's doing, so I'll wait and see!

    16. Astaroth on May 28, 2016

love the dr puzz pun and that shes got a metal shirt and ink stains on her labcoat

    17. Astaroth on May 28, 2016

does the fishbowl make her face appear human, because the tentacles start exactly at the lip of the bowl, i wonder if the bowl gets knocked off her head will the face under be really squiddly and its a kid or squid pun in disguise

    18. Missing avatar

      Daniel on May 28, 2016

@Dustin Jackson Really like this take on Dr. Puzz, the less humanoid face really makes it fit much better.

    19. William Iorweth Barton on May 28, 2016

Why does that octopus have human bits spliced on? Like everything about her just looks wrong (except the fish bowl). Firstly, Octopi have 6 arms and 2 legs: So why does she have 5 useless tentacles coming out of her face, 2 human legs, a pair of normal tentacles, and a pair of tentacles with human hands on the ends? Secondly, why does she have a human face, with like a nose and mouth (even though judging by the anatomy there should also be a mouth under her chin, wtf?) and EYELASHES?! SHE'S UNDERWATER SHE DOESN'T NEED EYELASHES!
Look, Ed Bryan, I respect you man--you made Mumbo Jumbo--but this... it's like you had a lot of different ideas for this character then said yes to all.

VERY rough doodle, just wanted to get the idea down, but something like this might work:

      http://i.imgur.com/O7Iy6Ln.png

simplifies the design a bit, gets rid of the human nose. I mean I'm not a character design pro or anything, but I feel like some small changes could really bring out the best of the design!

    22. Dustin Jackson on May 27, 2016

Looks great overall! I think the only thing I would change about Dr. Puzz is maybe getting rid of the human-ish nose. It looks a little too... uncanny valley on her I think? I think getting rid of the nose will help bring out the "octopus" part more, since she sort of looks more like a tentacled human at this point.

Ah, I am also not too fond of Dr. Puzz. Everyone else gets to be inhuman but the girl? I hate to put it that way, but I see it all too often. She almost has a jellyfish/octopus thing going on which I TOTALLY would have been on board for, but... there is the human aspect completely throwing it off. She even has a nice silhouette, though!

I don't like the hand tentacles, either. Even sticking gloves on would have been better. Also, I agree with another commenter that the set of hand arms are huge in comparison to everything else.

Okay. Dr Quack's character design is amazing. Good job on that one.

    26. Twentydragon on May 27, 2016

The design of Dr. Quack is great, but Dr. Puzz is just all over the place. I'm not sure Ed Bryan had a clear concept in mind.

There are too many different kinds of tentacles (I count four if you include the ones in pants and shoes. And the humanoid face on the octopus body is more than rather offputting. It also doesn't help that there are small tentacles coming off of her face, looking way too much like a beard.

A female octopus ally character design I could get behind. But I have no idea what this is.

    27. slot9 on May 27, 2016

The character design is great. I'm definitely thinking "What kind of other game would he be in" about Dr. Quack. I like the backstory behind Dr. Puzz and her design as well (it took a little bit for me to totally appreciate it).

      Good work!! Feels like Rare.

I didn't expect this after everything I've seen, but I finally found something I don't like about this game. The design of Dr. Puzz. It's just really bad. Three kinds of tentacles, really? Really busy design. And isn't this a woman? So why does she have a neckbeard? That said, even though this one design is absolutely terrible, I'm still super excited for this game! Can't wait!

    29. Paul Kt Bloms on May 27, 2016

Constructive feedback on Dr.Puzz. The chin tentacles are a bit offputting, either moving them to the side, back, or meshing them with the face better would really help.

I'm not sure what I'm looking at. As a diehard Rare fan, I have to say it. I'm extremely excited to see consistent content being released though.

Dr. Quack is crazy-awesome. Dr. Puzz looks just... not right. I dont like the design too much. But maybe you were going for a "kind of" unfitting design in which the single body parts seem stuck together without a real connection.
Otherwise everything else is awesome as usual. (the recent update too, ofc)

    35. TheSpeedyMouse on May 27, 2016

Dr. Quack looks awesome! :) Dr. Puzz.... She's kind of terrifying. :( It also looks like her tentacle beard was just copy and pasted on top. It's really creepy and she is supposed to be the nice one. Her head is also way too human looking. If her head was less human and the beard was gone it would be SO much better and she would fit in the game's world better in my opinion.

    36. Josh Dusel on May 27, 2016

i might be with @Cornelius Liphardt on this one. i bet it's a little late for a change huh?

      Alice on May 27, 2016

Not to mention, the tentacle beard looks like it is having that effect due to the crease at the bottom of the bowl... I say give it a second, and maybe it's the angle with the bowl's crease causing it, rather than poor design.

    38. Missing avatar

      Alice on May 27, 2016

I don't see why everyone has an issue with Dr. Puzz's design? I can see critiquing the small tentacle beard looking things, but for some reason I interpreted it as: the bowl made her actual octopus resembling head look human, thus why the little tentacles and the rest of her outside the bowl look more octopussy.

that's just my speculation, but being a transformation scientist for the game it would make sense!

    39. Pokelova on May 27, 2016

I agree with all the comments about Dr. Puzz. Frankly she's just uncomfortable to look at.

Duth Olec on May 27, 2016

I kinda have to throw in my thoughts on Dr. Puzz too, agreeing with the skeptics on the design. She kind of looks like three different creatures just stacked on top of each other. I really can't quite tell what is going on with the design. Although, when I look at that one artwork that shows all the characters with Puzz in the top-left, the shorter upper tentacles seam better into the head, so maybe it's just a thing about this render? Maybe I need to see her from more angles.
On the note of that art, when I first saw her I thought she would just have the shorter tentacles and then longer octopus tentacles and kind of be in the shape of an octopus, so I did not expect legs. But, hey, she's in charge of the transformations. Maybe legs work better on land than tentacles. Maybe tentacles work better everywhere than arms.

Sorry but Dr. Puzz is off putting. I absolutely hate her design but love Dr. Quack. She doesn't look as if she fits in, her tentacle beard looks cropped in, and looks like the love child of Dora the explorer and a octopus. Seems to childish. Gone from a banjo remake to a blues clues, Dora show.
