About

*** STRETCH GOAL: If our Poobah family surpasses 400 backers by December 12, you will receive a Starbucks gift card in your shipment of Poobah – The Conversation Game! The dollar amount will be a random of assortment ranging from $5 to $20. This offer applies to both current and new backers. ***

Poobah addresses a trend in our society dealing with the deterioration of quality family time, authentic human connections and mental wellness.

We would love to have you join our mission to unite people through the power of conversation by taking advantage of our reward levels – which include options for you, your family and friends, and our nonprofit partner, Give an Hour.

Our hope is, TOGETHER, we can make a difference in this world – one family at a time and one conversation at a time.

Poobah is a fun card game that brings people together through fun and meaningful conversations. The family-friendly game includes 250 playing cards divided across five categories: Emotions, Topics, What Would You Do, Debate and Activities. The game is specifically designed to:

…and most importantly, spark laughter and make the most of our time together. Thousands of memories are shared in every box!

How to Play

The rules of game play below are simple and can be learned in a minute.

Shake things up by creating your own rules. Below are some suggestions.

The Booty: The Grand Poobah determines the “booty” or prize such as having a special dessert or planning a fun activity following the game.

Party Pooper: Poobah may dismiss the drawn card and draw again.

Poobah’s Day Off: Play without the role of Poobah. All players respond to the drawn card and then submit a vote. No voting for yourself.

Closing Time: Change the length of the game by having more rounds with small groups or fewer rounds with large groups.

Alternate Ending: Draw a name from the ballot box to determine the winner.

Go Rogue: Break all the rules and draw cards to have great conversations.

Why is Poobah important?

The world is in need of strong families to help build a society of moral leaders and socially-conscious citizens - especially in the current environment. Conversations in the home are a key ingredient to educating and developing our children while strengthening our family relationships.

For many of us, we are stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted from our everyday lives. Competing priorities have minimized the importance of family time and many of our most important relationships have suffered as a result.

Research suggests that conversations are good for the spirit, brain and health of all family members as they are linked to:

Poobah can be the prompt to spark fun and meaningful conversations.

Our hope is, TOGETHER, we can make a difference in this world – one family at a time and one conversation at a time.

Love, Peace & Poobah!

About Give an Hour: Give an Hour is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3), founded in September 2005 by Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, a licensed clinical psychologist. Give an Hour believes that within our communities we have the resources to address many of the challenges that face society - challenges that often result in emotional pain and suffering. By harnessing the skills and generosity of citizens across our nation and around the world, Give an Hour provides those in need with help and hope.

About Give an Hour's initiative The Campaign to Change Direction: The Campaign to Change Direction is a collection of concerned citizens, nonprofit leaders, and leaders from the private sector who have come together to change the culture in America about mental health, mental illness, and wellness. This initiative was inspired by the discussion at the White House National Conference on Mental Health in 2013, which came on the heels of the Newtown, Conn. tragedy.

How was the game developed?

We created a game called "High-Low-Silly-Smart" to play with our kids where each of us would share the high and low points of our day as well as something silly and something learned throughout the day. These games ignited our conversations and our kids wanted to proactively play the game. We all learned more about ourselves and each other - building stronger bonds among everyone involved.

The conversations expanded with new content and rules, so we developed a prototype of a game - which has been modified and improved through the loving feedback of our friends. Then, something magical happened as the game spread throughout our personal network with great success. For instance, a father to both his own and foster children provided this feedback:

"We have welcomed a college student who grew up in foster care and was homeless his senior year of high school. He’s never experienced family and really appreciates the dinner routine and conversations with Poobah. It has helped him realize the power of family he’s never had. Thank you for that gift!"

After seeing the impact it was having on our own families and the lives of friends, we felt compelled to bring Poobah’s mission to a larger audience. Now, we’re absolutely thrilled to be launching on Kickstarter and bringing Poobah to you!

Why Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is the best and fastest way to connect with you to grow our Poobah family. We currently have professionally-manufactured games of Poobah ready to be delivered from our home to yours.

We’re mission-focused; not profit focused. We need to make money to stay in business, but we’re trying to run the business near cost to get this game in as many hands as possible. After crunching the numbers we settled on a retail price of $22. We believe this price point allows us to offer great value for a one-of-a-kind product – which has 250 game cards you can play for years without getting stale.

In addition, your contribution will allow us to purchase additional inventory and create new product expansions while helping us get our message out to the masses. Any dollar we gratefully earn will be wisely invested towards growing the Poobah family – which we hope includes you, your family and your friends.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest challenge is anticipating the initial demand of Poobah – The Conversation Game. Orders are expected to be shipped in mid-Dec. with delivery before Dec. 25. However, if we sell out of our Kickstarter inventory, it will take us two months before we can manufacture and ship our next batch.

We will be monitoring the orders closely, so please know we will do our best to make sure everyone gets their orders as quickly as we can.
