“There’s a very close connection between gaming and the element of horror. The “escape and survive” gameplay element especially elicits the most primal instinct of self-preservation.
Despite the fact that I was scared of the horror genre when I was young and largely avoided it, once I watched “Dawn of the Dead” on TV, the dramatic tale of survival instantly turned me into a fan. I then went on to create horror games like “Parasite Eve” and “Nanashi-no Game,” and you can see that even there the core gameplay elements revolve around running away.
Mr. Kohno was a trend-setter in using “running away” as a core element in games, beginning way back with “Clock Tower.” I can’t even imagine what kind of “escape and survive” horror game Mr. Kohno is going to create with a staff that includes famed J-horror movie director Takashi Shimizu and CG anime pioneer Shinji Aramaki. After all, this project transcends the fields of cinema, anime, and video games. Very much looking forward to it!”

Personally when I think of Japanese horror games that have a global presence, the titles that come to mind are “Resident Evil,” “Clock Tower,” and “Silent Hill.” “Resident Evil” of course is a long series with many spin-offs and “Silent Hill” has also been slated for a new game recently. So naturally I was thinking, “Well, that only leaves ‘Clock Tower’ now…” and surprise surprise, they drop this bombshell on us. And what’s more, Mr. Kono is personally leading the crowdfunding effort. How can I NOT support this project?! I mean we’re talking about those infamous scissors! Which means more sleepless nights of being chased by the sound of those shears.

Welcome to the Kickstarter for Project Scissors: NightCry, the latest game experience from veteran game director Hifumi Kono and co-created by film director Takashi Shimizu.
NightCry started from Kono-san’s desire to return to his roots and create a truly terrifying horror adventure game.
We need your financial support to make this a reality, though. Kono-san and his team at Nude Maker are working from a humble office, trying to make it all come together. The creators involved, including Shimizu-san, are coming together for little to no money to make this game happen, just the way Kono-san imagined it. That is how passionate and devoted this team is.
However, unlike the past glory days of the Japanese game industry, point-and-click games are a genre no publisher likes to take a chance on nowadays. And it doesn't help that Japanese publishers believe that the idea of a horror game without guns or weapons of any kind doesn't have mass market appeal.
We did secure some funding for the mobile version, but it's simply not enough to give you, the fans, the big screen (PC) experience we heard you requesting. Titles with original ideas and innovative gameplay, which have been the creative bedrock of this industry, have been largely pushed to the side in Japan.
That's why we want to go back to the roots of Japanese development and buck that trend with your support!
So that's why we brought NightCry to Kickstarter. All of us involved are passionate about making the game without compromise, and Kickstarter gives us a chance to include our fans in that passion!
It's up to you, the true fans of the Japanese horror game, to help us make this plan a reality. Your support will determine if NightCry is able to grow to its full potential or not. NightCry is set on a cruise ship, and you have been invited along for the cruise of a (possibly short) lifetime. While your surroundings are luxurious and the guests are friendly, not everything is as it should be. The guests and the crew start to turn up dead, the victims of some foul murderer.
As those aboard begin to suspect each other, night falls, and a baby’s cry echoes throughout. It's up to you to search for clues that will lead you to the killer as you float, lost, on the open sea.
But be forewarned - your actions will determine how many survive to the end.
NightCry is a 3D point-and-click adventure game. Players click to move their character, and click on objects to inspect or interact with them.
Additionally, the core gameplay of NightCry is comprised of two primary modes: exploration, and escape.
While in exploration mode, the player explores the luxury cruise liner where the game is set, and investigate the strange and often gruesome happenings. Players click on objects in the environment to investigate and obtain items, helping to solve puzzles and gain more clues.
You will also encounter other cruise ship guests & the crew during your investigation. Talking to them can reveal new information, and some could even prove essential to your surviving through the nightmare. Since so much depends on working with others, it's best not to ignore them!
While investigating, however, the player is always being stalked by a dark presence. Brought by a group of cultists that sneaked on board the cruise ship, a horrible evil now stalks the living - and it seems to have taken an unusual interest in you! And, in spirit with Kono-san's earlier horror work, you can only run or hide in order to survive your encounters with this evil! Without weapons, fighting back is simply not an option.
During your frantic escapes, you must be sure to quickly look over your shoulder to make sure you aren't being followed. Just try not to be too paranoid, ok?
Worse still, this evil force isn’t confined to simply roaming the ship's hallways, elevators, or rooms. Unlike the earliest victims, perhaps you will be able to survive long enough to find out what new abilities this evil possesses.
Finally, in the tradition of the best point-and-click adventure games, NightCry sports multiple endings. Who you meet, what you discover, and other actions will determine your fate. Will your ending be a new beginning or a final note?
Truly bringing NightCry to PC, and possibly other platforms, means that we must go beyond our plans for the mobile version and do our best to improve the graphical fidelity, content, and controls so that we can match the standards expected for a PC title. We want it so that when you finally play NightCry on the big screen, you will get the ultimate Japanese horror experience you have been waiting for, not a glorified mobile game!
Realizing this goal means we need to increase the development budget so we can increase the size of our development team and further increase the amount & quality of game content.
So far the game has been funded by a small group of independent investors and by the creators' own funds. But as the plan was originally for a mobile version, the existing budget is not enough to cover the bigger scale that we are seeking to give you!
NightCry is a great horror experience that cannot be found elsewhere, and we want to invest as much as we can to fully realize the game’s potential. You can bet that with a bigger budget we'll be able to go the extra mile and accomplish Kono-san's complete vision for the game!
Among these changes, we'd like to include the following:
- Detailed and natural hair animation
- Improved shaders
- Improved lighting and effects
- Full facial animation & lip synching for the game’s characters

NightCry’s music is being helmed by Nobuko Toda, known for her work on the Metal Gear Solid series and Halo 4, and industry veteran Michiru Yamane, most famous for the gothic music she provided for games like Castlevania: Bloodlines and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Despite their shared history working at Konami, NightCry will be their first collaboration! We're pretty excited to hear what they create too!

Nude Maker is an Japanese independent game studio founded & led by Hifumi Kono. This small, talented team has years of development experience under their belt, and is well known for creating amazing game experiences.
You probably already know at least one game that Kono-san and Nude Maker have made. Some notable examples include:
While at Human Entertainment, Kono-san developed and released the original Clock Tower on the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo) in Japan, making it one of the very first games in the survival horror genre.
A mixture of adventure game and horror, Clock Tower was unlike anything gamers had ever played. While most games at the time gave players tools and weapons to fight off their attackers, Clock Tower put you in the role of a vulnerable protagonist who had no choice but to run and hide from her attacker while attempting escape.

Nude Maker's most famous title, the incredibly ambitious Steel Battalion was developed for the Xbox in collaboration with Capcom and producer Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil and The Evil Within.
This mechanized bipedal tank simulator became quite famous because of its elaborate and exclusive controller. Furnished with two joysticks and 40 buttons, this incredible recreation was meant to simulate the experience of piloting a giant mech!
Nude Maker also developed Infinite Space in association with Platinum Games. Published by Sega on the Nintendo DS, it takes hints from the complex control system of Steel Battalion and combines it with a sci-fi treatment.
Players use the DS touch screen as a futuristic touch panel to command a fleet of starships through an RPG adventure.
Masahiro Ito, Kiyoshi Arai, and Chris Darril are known for their amazing artwork, and they’re bringing all of their talent to NightCry! We don't think it needs any other description. Just take a look for yourself:
Currently in development by Kono-san's studio, Nude Maker, NightCry was initially announced as Project Scissors. With their love for horror and their experience working in the genre, Kono-san and Shimizu-san are bringing the ultimate Japanese horror experience to the world.

Furthermore, other luminaries in the Japanese game industry have joined the team to realize this vision: Masahiro Ito, creature designer for the Silent Hill franchise; Kiyoshi Arai, famous for his Final Fantasy XII and XIV concept art; Nobuko Toda, a multi-award winning composer and audio director, famous for her work on Metal Gear Solid series and Halo 4; and Michiru Yamane, a veteran composer famous for her work on the Castlevania series; and that's not even the whole team!
Originally planned & announced for iOS, Android, and Vita, the overwhelming fan support and feedback we have received has convinced us to bring the project to Kickstarter!
Specifically, the results of our first announcement at Tokyo Game Show 2014 showed us something incredible. Gamers all over the internet were excited for the game, but so many were clamoring for the game's release on a big-screen platform and didn't want it be limited to mobile devices!
We want to make NightCry the PC game you deserve and asked for, and we need your help to do that.
NightCry will scare your socks off even if we’re only able to make the minimum goal, but there’s so much more we have ideas for!
Here are some of the amazing things we’d love to add to NightCry given the proper funds:
$350,000 - More Ways To Die: In addition to the unique death animations already in the game, we'll add more ways for you to meet a gruesome demise.
$400,000 - Extra Player Character: On top of the game's base content, at this stretch goal, we'll add an additional playable character to the cast! Kono-san already has some ideas up his sleeve for this character!
$450,000 - PlayStation 4: At this stretch goal level, we'll be able to add PS4 to the list of platforms to which we bring NightCry.
$550,000 - Xbox One: At this level, we'll be able to bring NightCry to Microsoft's new home console.
We'll reveal more of the ideas we have planned as we get close to each new goal!

You will receive a copy of the Collector's Edition that has been signed by the creators of NightCry!

You will receive everything from the $120 tier AND will also have your name listed in the game as a guest on the cruise ship where Project Scissors is set.
$600: Scream For Us!:
You will receive everything from the $120 tier AND be asked to submit a recording of their scream for inclusion in the game! You will also be credited as a scream actor in the game's credits.
$1200: At least you don’t need to run anymore?:
You will receive everything from the $200 tier AND will be asked to send us your picture! We will use it to honor you in the game by dressing a corpse in your style (no face).
$1500: Let me hear your voice!:
You will receive everything from the $200 tier AND will be able to attend a planning teleconference with the Nude Maker team discussing game topics, such as ways in which the player might be killed.
The meeting date will be arranged after the Kickstarter ends to the convenience of both the backers and Nude Maker. Translation will be available if needed.
$2500: Maybe you’ll make it to the end?:
You will receive everything from the $200 tier AND will be asked to submit a picture of yourself. We'll then use it to turn you into an NPC in the game, including your face! Survival is not guaranteed.
You will receive everything from the $200 tier AND will receive an original sketch from Ito Masahiro!
Requests are accepted, but requests for a certain geometrically-shaped man from a famous game series will be refused.
$4000: Play for me!:
You will receive everything from the $200 tier AND will be invited to attend a single recording session with the composers Nobuko Toda and Michiru Yamane in Europe (final location TBD). Travel expenses are not covered. Translation will be available if needed.
$5000: Launch Party:
You will receive everything from the $200 tier AND will receive an invitation to attend the Project Scissors launch party in Tokyo when the game is complete. Travel expenses are not included. Translation assistance will be available. Will also be specially listed in the game's credits.
$10,000: Walk, Don’t Run:
You will receive everything from the Launch Party tier AND will receive one of the two prop scissors used in Shimizu Takashi’s short movie - a TRUE collector's item! Note that we're keeping the other! The scissors will be presented to the backer during the launch party. Travel expenses are not included, but shipping & handling for the scissors will be provided. Translation assistance will be available. Will also be listed in the game's credits.

$10,000: Director’s Dinner:
You will receive everything from the $200 tier AND a dinner will be arranged in Tokyo with game director Hifumi Kono and film director Takashi Shimizu. Travel expenses are not included. The backer is welcome to schedule the dinner early in the development process. Translation assistance will be available. Will also be listed in the game's credits.
$10,000: Musician’s Dinner:
You will receive everything from the $200 tier AND a dinner in Tokyo will be arranged with composers Nobuko Toda and Michiru Yamane. Travel expenses are not included. The backer is welcome to schedule the dinner early in the development process. Translation assistance will be available. Will also be listed in the game's credits.
Risks and challenges
There is no question that there are risks and challenges inherent to the video game creation process. The biggest risk is in completing the game to the best of our abilities, given a finite budget and timeline.
While this is a difficult prospect no matter who the developer is, Nude Maker is well versed in delivering a great product on a deadline. Having developed retail titles with Capcom, Platinum Games and Sega, Nude Maker has become well versed in using time and money wisely to deliver a high quality product.
On top of that, Kono-san has plenty of experience directing game development, having shipped multiple titles both during his time at Nude Maker, and while at Clock Tower developer Human Entertainment.
That said, the technical issues involved in game development can be difficult to predict, so there is always a chance that a delay may occur.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We are planning on sharing as much information as possible, so please check out the updates! We’re releasing more details about the world of NightCry and how the game is played all the time!
At the minimum goal, NightCry will be available for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Mac OS X is under consideration, but the development team would like to try and make it happen.
At this time, we can only confirm that we want to release on Steam. Other stores like GOG, Playism, and the Humble Store are under discussion, but we definitely want to make a DRM-free version available if at all possible.
While we’d love to bring NightCry to multiple platforms, we can only confirm PC as the target platform for the “big screen” version at this moment. The level of support we receive will determine our ability to target other platforms.
Currently, NightCry will released with English text and English voice only. Other languages are being considered, and will depend on the level of support we receive.
Will you offer signed Collector’s Editions for any of the Collector’s Editions tiers without signatures included?
For now, the signatures will only be available for the reward tiers that explicitly state that a signed collector’s edition is included.
While the final number of tracks has not been decided, Toda-san and Yamane-san are expecting to produce around 12 tracks.
It is currently being finalized. Our current expectation is that the artbook (in digital and physical form) will be around 15 pages. The final length may fluctuate based on the number of stretch goals unlocked.
Yes. Both physical versions of the game include a physical manual, lovingly created specifically for the boxed NightCry Kickstarter reward. Since NightCry will include a full in-game tutorial, the manual is included purely as a nostalgic callback to the olden days of gaming.
We haven’t yet determined the exact sizes for the the regular or CE boxes, as we are still finalizing how the extra rewards in the CE are to be packed.
The dimensions and cover art for the physical version of NightCry are still being worked on, as Nude Maker is 100% focused on moving the game forward. But we will be sure to show backers what they’re in for as soon as possible!
All backers that live outside of the United States will have to pay an international shipping charge of $15 on top of the base price of the reward tier they choose. Those inside the US will be charged $5 for shipping.
We plan to ship all digital/physical rewards for NightCry by the end of 2015. Fulfillment will begin more-or-less simultaneously, but the number of backers will determine how time the process takes!
While we describe this in the main page, the funds received from the minimum goal will be used to enhance the game’s graphics and increase the content volume. Beyond that, our stretch goals are about adding even more content, and possibly more platforms, to NightCry. The core game will have a strong level of content and replayability, but we want to do more and the team needs your support in order to continue working on game content! Beyond that, we need to pay Kickstarter their share & pay for physical rewards fulfillment as well. But we are doing our best to see that Kono’s team sees as much funding as possible so that they can deliver the gaming experience you want and deserve!
While the non-enhanced iOS, Android and Vita versions of NightCry will be developed no matter what, the future of the enhanced PC version relies upon your help! Please show us your support!
