About this project
We here at NIGORO believe in the future of the 2D platformer. While 3D games have gained in popularity, we've always wondered where the future of the 2D game could take us.
La-Mulana was a sprawling action adventure game with tons of secrets, items, and difficult enemies. The original was made as a love letter to the 8-bit games we grew up with.
In 2011, we remade the first La-Mulana, remixed areas, and upgraded the graphics to match a more modern 16-bit aesthetic. At that point, La-Mulana was finished, but it's not the end. We can do more.
With your help, we can make the sequel we've always wanted to make, and play a part in helping Japan regain its position as a fundamental part of the gaming world stage.
Please, lend us your support.
La-Mulana, the ‘Archeology Adventure’ game, was originally made in 2006 as a hobby project by the members of what is now NIGORO.
The game was then remade in 2011 and released on WiiWare. It was subsequently ported to PC. Thanks to our fans, it was greenlit on Steam, making it one of the first Japanese games to successfully make it through the Steam Greenlight system.
While the game received a metascore of 87, we felt it was a shame the remake did not offer anything new to seasoned players of the original game. We heard comments from gamers saying “I wish I could develop amnesia and enjoy it for the first time all over again!” more than once. That’s why we decided it was time to revisit La-Mulana and create a new game.
In La-Mulana 2, you will take on the role of Lumisa Kosugi on a mission to find the entrance to the ruins of Eg-Lana, which is rumored to be the source of recent monster appearances. The ruins themselves are compromised of a variety of areas as well as huge boss creatures known as Guardians. Who knows what lies in wait at the end of Eg-Lana?
It's true that La-Mulana 2 is a sequel, but we want to make it enjoyable both for people returning to the series and newcomers alike. While “You don’t need to have played the prequel!” is a horribly overused cliché, we feel it’s appropriate here. We want all players to be able to play and enjoy our work.

With the sequel to La-Mulana, our aim is to create a fresh new experience for people who enjoyed the first game, while also giving newcomers a chance to enjoy the series without being forced to play La-Mulana first.
La-Mulana 2 is being developed primarily for the PC, and will have gamepad support, just like the original La-Mulana.
Even if we only hit the minimum goal for this Kickstarter, we can still make La-Mulana 2 everything we want it to be. That said, the more funding and time we have, the more great features we'll be able to add to the final game. There are a lot of dream features we'd love to add to the game, and we've turned them into stretch goals.
Thanks to backer feedback, we've revisited our stretch goals and rerun our numbers to see how we can better serve our fans, and still deliver what we promise. Below you'll find our new stretch goals, based on the amazing feedback we received.
$200,256: Curry Party - REACHED!
The whole La-Mulana 2 team will sit together and have a curry party live on Twitch.TV. Curry is the soul of La-Mulana, and curry will be the soul of our team.
$200,768: Curry Hell - REACHED!
La-Mulana 2 director Takumi Naramura will eat curry three times a day for three days. Enduring this spicy hell will make him stronger, allowing him the ability to make an even better game!
$230,000: Father's Diary - REACHED!
While La-Mulana 2 is a sequel, you can play the game having never played the first one. However, we imagine a large number of players want to know what happened after the first game ended. This stretch goal will enable us to include a mode which reveals far more about the story and world of La-Mulana.
$260,000: Monster Guide
La-Mulana 2 is jam-packed with new monsters. We believe if players know more about the enemies they face, they will be able to immerse themselves further into the world. This stretch goal will enable us to include an in-game bestiary in the final product.
$300,000: Evil Stages
La-Mulana had the insidiously difficult Hell Temple, and at this stretch goal, we'll add an even more difficult stage to La-Mulana 2. Do...do you even want that?!
$350,000: Character Stories
At this stretch goal, we'll include the ability to, upon completing the game, play as a new character with a unique story. Additionally, players will be able to switch between characters during play.
$400,000: Mac and Linux Versions
At this stretch goal, we will also make OSX and Linux versions of La-Mulana 2.
$???,???: Wider Localization
At this stretch goal, we'll not only release the game in Japanese and English, but in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Traditional Chinese as well.
$???,???: Home Console Versions I
At this stretch goal, we'll port La-Mulana 2 to Wii U, PS4, or possibly even Xbox One. (platforms included are subject to negotiation)
$???,???: Handheld Versions
We will make a Vita or possibly a 3DS version of La-Mulana 2, so more gamers will get to play it. (platforms included are subject to negotiation)
$???,???: Home Console Versions II
At this stretch goal, we'll port La-Mulana 2 to Wii, PS3, or possibly Xbox 360. (platforms included are subject to negotiation)
We produced 2 retro-style La-Mulana guidebooks and distributed them digitally. However, due to the amount of text, it proved to difficult to translate. At this stretch goal, we will make a new guidebook and translate it into English for release.
$???,???: The Original Version of La-Mulana
We made the original La-Mulana 1 (not the remake) when we were still amateurs. We would love to return to it and update it to work on modern PCs.
$???,???: La-Mulana 2 mod tools
At this stretch goal level, we'll create mod tools for players so they too can make their own unique La-Mulana experience.

Check the chart below for the full breakdown for every reward tier:
La-Mulana was known as a “Metroidvania” style game (a 2D action platformer with an emphasis on non-linear exploration). That said, the real core of the game is in deciphering the riddles scattered about the game, and solving the puzzles that exist as part of the ruins.
A classic experience: As with the previous game, La-Mulana 2 will not feature a tutorial or a long-winded sidekick. As a seasoned explorer, it's up to you to discover the secrets hidden within the ruins and find the truth within.
Explore on your terms: By deciphering cryptic text on the monuments scattered throughout the ruins, the player can slowly unravel the riddle of the ruins. Which part of the sprawling underground to tackle, and in what order, is up to you. Sometimes you will need to use changes in background, mysterious sounds, the strength of enemies or the sneakiness of traps to detect a change in their surroundings.
A colossal adventure: We have designed a variety of zones, and have created a mystery deep enough to encompass a gigantic cave system. This is a very large scale indie title. We predict newcomers to the series would probably clear the game in 20 to 30 hours. Because of the non-linear nature of Eg-Lana, La-Mulana 2 will have plenty of replayability.
New horrors, new weapons: Plenty of ferocious and terrifying monsters and guardians stand in your way in the depths of this new underground network. Fortunately, there will also be an arsenal of tools and weapons to help you on your journey.
Widescreen Support: The first La-Mulana was a remake of a retro-styled game that ran in a 4:3 aspect ratio, which made widescreen support impossible. For La-Mulana 2, NIGORO is developing the game's areas and rooms with a 16:9 aspect ratio in mind, making it perfect for widescreen TVs and monitors.
The question we’re asking ourselves is “How can 2D games take advantage of recent developments in technology?”
Eg-Lana, known as the other side of the La-Mulana ruins, was once used as a penal colony by nearby settlers.
It is a place full of evil, malice, and hate...
Can Lumisa solve the mystery of Eg-Lana?
(21 years old. 4th Generation Japanese. Protagonist)
Some say she is Lemeza's wife's daughter from a previous marriage, while others believe she's Professor Shorn's illegitimate child. Either way, she is a Kosugi; that much is clear. With the request to search the ruins from Xelpud in hand, she travels to La-Mulana to make her archaeological debut.
(36 years old, the original protagonist)
Tales of his exploits in the ruins of La-Mulana may be known worldwide, but he was also responsible for the ruins collapsing, and has gone into hiding as a result. His desire to explore has not faded, however, and still finds time to go spelunking in secret.
(67 years old)
After revealing the "treasure of all life" brought back from the ruins of La-Mulana, he returned to an hermetic life once more. Although he quit after finishing his research on "The root of all life", he finds himself slowly drawn back into the world of archeology.
Xelpud The Elder
Upon the collapse of the La-Mulana ruins, his life as the 7th child came to an end. He's been spending his time running the "La Mulana ruins tourist spot" as a method of once more finding a purpose in his life. As a result, he's become quite wealthy, and now lives a life of luxury full of beautiful women and fast cars.
(3024 years old. She looks about 24.)
Since being released from the ruins, she has been happily living above ground, pretending to be a young woman. Using her amazing knowledge of history, she has become a treasure hunter. She's also grown quite fashionable.
The world of La-Mulana is a vast one, and players will travel through a variety of locations on their journey. Below are some rough sketches of new areas Lumisa will find during her adventure.
Roots Of Yggdrasil
This area serves as the entrance to Eg-Lana. Because of its close proximity to the surface, vegetation is plentiful and covers the walls.
World Of The Fairies (Alfheim)
The Fairy King calls this area home.
Immortal Battlefield (Midgard)
A land filled with exiles trapped in eternal battle.
Blazing Frost Canopy (Muspellheim)
An inhospitable area where ice and fire coexist.
Eg-Lana is also filled with nefarious monsters, and we've done a few rough sketches to show some examples of the mini-bosses we've been designing.
We're working on creating a soundtrack that will bring La-Mulana 2 and its characters to life. While we don't yet have music ready to show, you can check out the music from the first La-Mulana to get an idea what we're aiming for:
The name "NIGORO" comes from the words for 2, 5 and 6 in Japanese. We chose that name because we adore 8-bit games!
However, that doesn't mean we are trying to create a game that would fit into that era. Instead, we want to take what was so great about those titles and combine it with modern elements to move the genre forward.
The Playism team working on La-Mulana 2 is made up of three people: Josh Weatherford, Nayan Ramachandran, and Shunji Mizutani.
Playism is assisting NIGORO in several ways. Playism will be localizing the Japanese script of La-Mulana 2 into English, and will also be publishing both versions of the game. Playism is also helping to set up and run the Kickstarter campaign for La-Mulana 2, and helping NIGORO to connect with their English-speaking fanbase. In short, Playism is helping NIGORO every step of the way, from start to finish.
For indie game creators like us, every time we make and release a new game, we're putting our lives on the line.
Our team is small, but we have to be able to fully develop and polish the game before our funding runs out. However, we refuse to rush the project, because if we do, it will (rightfully) be ignored by fans and will prevent us from making any more games.
This is why we’re aiming to make an incredibly high quality, fully tested and content-rich title within a reasonable amount of time.
We've always wanted to expand the universe of La-Mulana and improve upon the concepts we introduced in the first game. What we feared, is that we wouldn't have the funds to make the game we wanted to make, and the game our fans deserve.
We're always listening to our fans, and we've taken all the praise and criticism to heart. We changed elements of La-Mulana in the remake based on fan feedback, and we're hoping to take that ethos to the next level with La-Mulana 2.
That's why we want you in on the process.
With your help, we can realize the dream of a monumental sequel to La-Mulana, taking what we learned from La-Mulana's development and your feedback, and making the game you deserve.
Risks and challenges
The primary risk when making games is the unexpected time it takes to develop a game. Delays can happen, and unexpected issues can occur. The good news is that NIGORO already has plenty of experience! We know how to make a game of this scope on the budget we're given, and we're always talking with our community to make sure the game meets expectations.
The other major challenge will be in making La-Mulana 2 welcoming to new players. There's no doubt that some of you pledging will be playing a La-Mulana game for the first time, and it's really important to us that your first experience is a fun one. We've gone back to La-Mulana and looked at what worked, and what didn't. We've looked at forum posts and tweets to see what people liked, and what people didn't.
We're also going to be opening up alpha testing to backers in the appropriate tiers, so you can get the games in your hands, and give us feedback on how we can make the game even better.
We believe that staying in contact with our fans and making sure their voice is heard is an important part of the development process. In just the way that player reactions to the original La-Mulana shaped its remake, we hope that access to the alpha version of La-Mulana 2 will help to shape the game throughout its development.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
At present, Kickstarter will be the only way to get the unlockable costumes that will be in La-Mulana 2. That said, we definitely looking to add additional costumes down the line that will be available for all players to unlock.
By using the Playism digital distribution service to deliver digital rewards to each of our backers, we can get all of your DRM-free rewards to you in the smoothest way possible. All you need to do is create a Playism account using the same email address you used to back La-Mulana 2, and we'll take care of the rest. If you already have a Playism account using the same email address you use for Kickstarter, you're ready to go.
Redeemable Steam keys for your backer rewards will be waiting for you on your Playism account page.
Yes! While it does not say so in the rewards sidebar (which is our mistake), the BOXER tier does in fact include the physical version of La-Mulana 2! If you are unsure if a specific reward is available in the tier you're interested in, be sure to check out the reward breakdown.
