Everything you need to get your friends into RPGs

Welcome to IRIS, a universe where color abounds and adventure awaits!

Not sure how to get your friends into tabletop roleplaying games? Same here. That’s why we set out to make Iris: Adventure Game, an RPG-in-a-box that plays like a board game and is designed to introduce both first-time Gamemasters and players to tabletop RPGs.

To be honest, we created IRIS because we wanted our wives to play the "world's greatest roleplaying game" with us – true story. And it worked! We want more board gamers converted to roleplayers. So we created an adventure game that's quick to set up, exciting to play, and easy to expand with your own custom adventures.

Adventures, battle maps, and easy setup

Most importantly, we've put everything you need to play IRIS in one box at a cost that won't make you wait for grandma's birthday check (that $5 is clutch). When you back IRIS, you get the core box set, which includes:

  • A rulebook to learn how to play as either the Gamemaster or as a player.
  • An alienary of strange, wonderous creatures to easily reference while playing and to create your own, custom sci-fi adventures.
  • Punchout tokens with beautiful illustrations by Casey Cookson for each of the characters and creatures in the alienary.
  • A couple of dice (one d6 and one d12) so that you can be a high roller. (Though, if you’re like us, you’ve already got your special, fancy dice always waiting for an excuse to show off.)
  • Card decks with 72 cards for each of the 3 playable species to quickly jump into the action and to customize your deckbuilding tactics for your preferred style of play.
  • Character booklets and character sheets for each of the 3 playable species to easily set up your Draw Deck and get rolling.
  • The “Falling Star” adventure, a ready-to-play campaign with 9 chapters that can each be played in 90-120 minutes.
  • An additional one-shot adventure to ensure that you have ample content to keep your board game group entertained for many sessions.
  • And because we love you: battle maps for all of the adventures included in the core set. The battle maps are printed in a convenient, spiral-bound book so that you can lay it flat and use it as the game board.

The MSRP for Iris: Adventure Game will be $70, so Kickstarter backers get the IRIS core set at a $10 discount.

Hex Kit

All of our battle maps are made using the gorgeous and simple Hex Kit. Hex Kit is a map-making program designed by Cecil Howe and his crew that uses beautifully hand-illustrated hex tiles in a user-friendly application to craft and layer lovely adventure maps.

Prototype design

Not only have Cecil and crew over at Hex Kit let us snag a commercial license to publish our Hex Kit maps with IRIS, they’re even offering a 66% discount on Hex Kit, bundled with the Fantasyland and Traveling Through Dangerous Scenery tilesets, if you back at the “Captain Your Own Crew” or “All Systems At Full Power” pledge tiers. Snag a copy of Hex Kit and two tilesets, and make some of your own beautiful maps.

(By the way, we also use Hex Kit for our 5E home games. Seriously, it’s a fantasic RPG resource.)

What makes IRIS different?

As a deckbuilding card game, IRIS takes the shared storytelling of RPGs and simplifies the setup and gameplay into an easily accessible game that puts combat and puzzles in the palm of your hands.

Stop worrying about needing to read several hundred pages before you play. IRIS is written to be simple and fast so that you can grab some friends and go.

Get colorful. A fully integrated color mechanic allows players to manipulate the Source Colors and produce powerful team combos.

There are no max stats! What? That's nonsense. No, it's super fun. Want to increase your Health? Do it. Whatever your Health is currently, roll those dice, and add that value to it. Need to move faster? Of course you do; we all do. Play a card that increases Move, roll your dice, and add that value to your Move.

Stat increases and reductions persist throughout combat. When you increase your Barrier, your Range, your whatever, that stat increase remains in effect until the next time you roll initiative (which is typically at the start of the next adventure chapter).

Meet the species

Players can create their own characters as one of the 3 playable species:

  • the small and curious Achroite
  • the agile and mighty Seti
  • the patient and prideful Taes

Achroite

While the vast majority of Achroite are wild and uncivilized, Achroite tribes do adhere to a matriarchy, with each tribe usually led by a “Great Mother.” The few Achroite who do integrate into civilization do so out of personal ambition and typically stick to Taes-dominated planets, which are most familiar to them. Consequently, the Achroite do not have a unified government and are typically represented by either local Mothers or the members of the Taes aristocracy.

Achroite artists and musicians are renowned for their marvelous works, and the Taes believe the Achroite to be the oldest of the known sentient species.

The Achroite are native Source Color beings, their small crystalline, prismatic bodies glowing with the pulse of Source Color. Achroite typically have a couple preferred Source Colors; however, Achroite ecology requires variegated procreation to maintain proper balance.

  • Average height: 3 feet
  • Prismatic crystalline skin
  • Pulsing glow emanating from within chest
  • Average life expectancy: 1,500 years

Seti

Seti are the most widespread of the known sentient species. An insectoid species, the Seti often develop a shared consciousness within their colonies. This shared awareness exists only among members of that colony while they remain within it. Immigrants and exiles who leave their colony lose the shared consciousness but can reacquire it by integrating back into a Seti colony, whether it is their former colony or a different one.

While the Seti have been conquered by the Taes Empire, many of their colonies still operate as independent states. Some of these Seti colonies have formed unofficial alliances amongst themselves, while most colonies war with each other for control of territory and resources.

Seti are quick, with strong legs and small wings structured to propel them through the air. Seti nervous systems quickly process stimuli, allowing them to deftly maneuver and adjust momentum, while Seti eyes are able to process all Source Colors simultaneously. Seti warriors are renowned for their speed and agility.

  • Average height: 4 feet
  • Thick exoskeleton of all variety of colors
  • Large eyes and small wings
  • Average life expectancy: 40 years

Taes

While Taes maintain respectful relationships with the other species, they seldom develop open or close relationships outside of their own species. The Taes Empire openly proclaims itself the longest-lived and most expansive civilization, and many Taes consider their social institution the pinnacle of all civilizations created by sentient intelligence.

The Taes Empire is ruled by an Empress and a strict aristocracy. Noble families vary in power and influence and handle most, if not all, of the local governing. Political marriages and trade deals are common as families try to increase their influence and holdings.

Taes are intelligent, judicious, and patient. They commit themselves to rigorous study and physical discipline. Taes are able to manipulate Source Colors naturally, and even as toddlers, they learn how to bend, shift, and control Source Colors. For Taes, chromatics is an integral part of their lives, a tool to be used commonly.

  • Average height: 6 feet
  • Pale hard skin with slight blue, green, yellow, or orange hues
  • Long, slender necks and appendages
  • Average life expectancy: 400 years

Weird and wild worlds

Grab some friends and explore the vast reaches of a strange and alien galaxy in Iris: Adventure Game.

Stretch goals

Everyone who backs at the "Engines Engaged" pledge tier or higher will get all stretch goals as they're unlocked.

We want to keep our stretch goals simple and use them to pack as much content as possible into the IRIS core set. So what can you expect?

$40,000 - The Trial Of Doccoll: "The Trial Of Doccoll" one-shot adventure is tailored to new players and new Gamemasters and is an extended puzzle that sends players into the dangerous valley of Doccoll to command their mastery of the Source Colors and transport 6 colored orbs through the winding valley.

$45,000 - The Liberation Of Captain Viklin: "The Liberation Of Captain Viklin" one-shot adventure takes players to one of the Empire's worst-kept secrets: the orbiting prison cells surrounding the star Ultirno. An impossible prison break – are you crazy enough to pull it off?

$50,000 - Additional Artwork: Casey has a gift for illustrating the surreal and the fantastical, and we want to fill the IRIS books with more and more pages of her beautiful creature and environmental illustrations. This artwork is additional to what we already have planned.

$55,000 - The Shadow Of Terror: "The Shadow Of Terror" one-shot adventure finds players trapped at a research camp as a horrible creature hunts and devours the research team. Can the players survive and find their escape, or will they be consumed?

$60,000 - Additional Artwork: More artwork! Every additional illustration that we can include helps expand the world and bring the imaginations of players and Gamemasters to life. We love it and love supporting our artist.

$70,000 - (SECRET STRETCH GOAL): This stretch goal will be revealed after the previous stretch goals have been unlocked.

No international availability?

Iris: Adventure Game is currently not available for international shipping. With the current uncertainties about costs for international freight and overseas shipping from the US, we're not confident to accurately estimate what international shipping costs will be a year from now when units will be shipped.

We're so sorry for the inconvenience. After our Kickstarter rewards have been fulfilled, we do plan to offer international shipping for online orders on our website and on Amazon. If you're interested in getting a copy of IRIS but don't live in the US, please sign up for our free newsletter or back our project at the "Open Comms Channel" pledge tier, and we'll send out an update as soon as IRIS is available for international shipping.

Risks and challenges

This is our first Kickstarter campaign. We have some amazing consulting help from mentors who have successfully funded and fulfilled their own Kickstarter campaigns.

Our biggest concern is being transparent about our timeline and delivery date. Artwork and illustrations take time, and so we're estimating 6 months to finish artwork and finalize layouts. Once we put in the production order, that's another 6 months for all of the units to be printed, sent to our fulfillment center, and then shipped out to you. That puts a delivery date around early Oct. 2020.

We already have IRIS designed and playtested, and as soon as the artwork is finished, we'll put in the production order. We can't promise there won't be unexpected delays, but we can promise that we'll be honest about any issues we encounter.
