Experience the world of the Vikings. Join Erik in his journey from cradle, youth and eventual grave. It is times of change as the old beliefs are challenged by a new God and trade routes mean contact with people from strange lands. The game focuses on civilized trading as well as the faith and brutality of the viking era; a time when Christianity arrived in the North and became the dominant faith.
'Playing History: Vikings' is a casual learning adventure game where the narrative unfolds as you make decisions, complete quests, master fighting and get the good trade deals. The game allows you to interact with the age of the Vikings. You cannot change history, but you can make a difference by becoming chieftain; Will you take your rightful place - or will you fade into the abyss of history?
In 'Playing History: Vikings' you navigate young Erik through actual events taking place in the era of the Vikings. You will have to make the right decisions, talk to the right people and fight off enemies trying to take over your land. Throughout the game you are able to collect secret coins for extra loot - furthermore you are rewarded with gold for spotting historical anachronisms. Also, you may, as were accustomed at that time, acquire the favor of the gods to help you and Erik in the journey of becoming a true Viking.

Why Kickstarter? Unfortunately, the game is not yet finished. As you can see below, we need resources for development of the final features; resources necessary to make this chapter of ‘Playing History' the game that we believe it deserves to be.

- Creation of an extended story-line which will include different game endings to increase player autonomy.
- The creation of godly powers in the fighting mini-game to teach about deities of the Viking religion 'The Aesir-Faith'.
- Enhanced narrative by adding short cut-scenes that help the flow of the story as well as help communicate knowledge about the time.
- Voice acting for the in-game characters.
- Extended QA phase to ensure the anticipated high quality level of 'Vikings'.

When playing ‘Vikings’ children can witness history unfold first hand, in an interactive environment. Here they play and engage with past events, allowing them to create personal experiences and tangible memories of something that happened more than a thousand years ago. By balancing play and learning, we allow the young students to have fun while getting more knowledgeable in the process. The primary demographic of the game is students aged 9-13 years, but it is evident that more than a few parents and teachers have also thoroughly enjoyed the previous ‘Playing History’ games.
The ‘Playing History-Series’ include two previous installments; the award-winning 'The Plague' and 'Slave Trade'. These games educated children about the impacts of serious historic events through first hand experiences.
By releasing 'Playing History: Vikings' we feel that we are ready to challenge the learning game industry by kicking it up several notches; by providing fully interactive 3 dimensional world on top of a longer game experience than previous installments as well as more ambitious mini-games.
In creating 'Playing History: Vikings' we challenged the recreation of the early years of the viking's European settlements head on. Not only by creating a historically credible adventure in the lifespan of our main character Erik; but also in designing a surrounding game world containing artifacts and architectural details accurate to this period in time.
The game is a continuation of a series that previously focused on 2D. When we decided to create a full 3D game, we were immediately faced with the challenge of translating the established 'Playing History’ visual style into this new 3D environment, without compromising the artistic vision.
Your donation will not only make this project a reality. Your support and feedback will inspire the successful completion of this 'Playing History' chapter. And you will have taken part in teaching thousands of children about The Viking Age...
Risks and challenges
We have already developed two award-winning games in the Playing History series that tackled the impact of the Black Death and the Slave Trade. Now we are ready to kick it up several notches with full 3D experience, longer game experience and more ambitious mini-games.
We are well on our way with 2/3 of the game finished, but are having challenges finding the resources to get the vision to where we want it. Therefore, we need your help to revolutionize the teaching of history whether it be in in schools or at home history.
