Hello everyone, and thanks for taking the time to visit my project page!
...is my first comic project going out for indie publication. It's the story of Nanaki Kazuaki and Sakazaki Yuuya in the beginnings of a strange and unconventional relationship; they're two birds who will always care about someone else more than each other. The comic takes place in the world of Hatoful Boyfriend, right after the sequel, Holiday Star.
Who are You?
My name is Dawn Davis, also known as "playerprophet" on the internet. I have written and drawn for published works in the past but this will be my first published story made independently. You can view my work on my deviantart, or check anywhere for my username. It's probably me.
I hope to be spending most of 2015 working on my original work, Those Without Shadows, but I desperately want to see this project through before I get too deep into my opus.
For the sake of making these things available when it was in a difficult format, I am responsible for composing a fairly popular Let's Play for both Hatoful Boyfriend, and its sequel Holiday Star. The latter I finally got around to for the sake of research for this project.
What is Hatoful Boyfriend?
Hatoful Boyfriend is a dating sim where all the love interests are birds. It's available here, on Steam. You should definitely give it a try! Its creator, Hato Moa, has been very open and encouraging about fan-created content, including the production and sale of prints, comics and accessories as long as her own art isn't being reproduced. Therefore the creation of a fan-comic is completely acceptable for this series.
What is Broken Birds?
Broken Birds, as stated above is a Doujinshi/Fancomic highlighting the relationship between Nanaki Kazuaki and Yuuya Sakazaki. It is a 72-page comic that began in November 2014 as a part of 24-hour-comic day. At that time I drew Burden Bearers which you can read here. Broken Birds will contain the 24-page Burden Bearers, toned and cleaned, along with a 34-page never-before seen sequel, Broken Birds. With these two comics, authors notes, a few freebies and some thanks to you, I have a 72-page doujinshi.
The stories together are about Yuuya and Kazuaki choosing to see each other, knowing that both have secrets and each can keep them. The baggage remains, but they might never know what is inside. Could two people possibly be better off in a situation like this? Broken Birds is about healing in a somewhat unconventional relationship.
This is where I need you!
I would like to get Broken Birds printed for vanity reasons sooner or later, but with your help it can happen sooner. I'm attending TCAF in May of 2015 so I'd like to have the finished product submitted for print by the end of February. I'm already running a little bit behind, but I'm sure I can get it done by the end of the Kickstarter campaign. I finished Burden Bearers in a week and it was 24 pages, I can get a 34-page sequel done in four.
The $500 minimum budget is all I need to get this printed. I'm not lining my pockets, but when I have the books I will be able to put them up for sale.
$450 covers printing fees and shipping the books, 50 copies.
The remaining cash covers merch for backers and Kickstarter fees.
The real reason we all wanna support things on Kickstarter.
As soon as the book is complete, each backer will receive a PDF of the book! Up from there, we get into the physical rewards. Here's a collection of what is available through the Print Pack, and including the cover card you receive every donation over $5.
Then of course there's the physical book.
The final appearance is subject to change.
The largest possible reward is the whole comic itself.
There's still lots of rewards left for new backers now that we've hit funding, but I've added one new reward for everyone contributing $25+, a 2x2 inch sticker badge! You can have it in the form of a 2 inch button instead, if you like.
Broken Birds is officially FUNDED. It's time to talk about Stretch Goals!
$1000 - I can get a print run of 100 books, moving my printer to Jimi agency, who provides a glittering cover! I'll additionally add Mama's Boy cover postcards to every postcard order.
$1500 - You guys really want doujinshi! At the $1500 stretch goal I will commit to another Hatoful Boyfriend doujinshi - Mama's Boy - about Yuuya. Backers spending $50+ will also receive a copy of Mama's Boy sometime before the end of 2015. I'll release more information about Mama's Boy once the first stretch goal is reached.
$2000 - Let's break into the Japanese Market! With this much cash I can hire a translator and look into getting Broken Birds and Mama's Boy localized into Japan. Maybe, just maybe, I can get it all done by Hato Moa herself.
Thank you for reading!
Risks and challenges
Doujinpress, which I will be using to print these doujinshi, offers a faster shipping service based on how much cash I wanna fork out. In order to deliver the product on time I may need to submit it late and pay the extra out of my pocket. As long as the projects' minimum is funded, I should be able to pay the rest no problem.
I'm very proud of my work and excited for what's to come, so I'll surely share every step and delay with my backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
