It's all just puzzle pieces, isn't it? You're home and you wanna go out, you're busy as hell and you wanna slow down. You wanna wear a jumpsuit and get down with yer bad self, you wanna be stoic and call yourself "Mr. Chocolate".
Well, those last two may just be my own thing.
Point being, in between those albums of mine this past year, I quietly wrote and recorded songs that didn't fit in with either of them. In fact, I tend to hide songs like these away. That is until listened back to them and played them for a few folks. And then continued writing and recording while letting the door open to some of my favorite artists. One of them was Judy Blank, a new artist from Norway who helped me with "I Never Loved You". Then there was Aaron Lee Tasjan, a major force in the Americana world, who added some lyrics to "Am I Still Livin". Most of the record is me playing all the instruments but on a few bass and drums covered so I could record the song live with all of us playing together. Lastly, Kacey Musgraves' touring violinist, Kristin Weber, laid real strings on the record. I believe it's the first record I've ever had with real strings now that I think of it.
There are songs about my own struggles with happy vs. sad and songs about the loss of my father. Songs about life in the age of numbing internet afternoons and even a song about how songwriter's are supposed to know what they're talking, er, singing about.
I asked around how people like to obtain their music and while I was going to just put it on Spotify and call it a day, I decided to see press vinyl and CD's for the fans who said when they love something they wanna hold it.
And so, with pre-ordering and general funding, I can do just that. Vinyl in particular is so expensive. I did find a great pressing plant that can do a fine job for a little under $2,000. That plus CD and artwork should be about $2,500 all together.
So, let's do it!
