Hello, and welcome to this fundraiser to help cover printing costs for the newest collection of PLASTIC FARM comics.
UPDATE 11.07.12 - We have crushed our first two stretch goals. Thank you all so much for your support and help promoting this thing. So now, everyone who pledges at a level where they get something physical mailed to them will also receive PLASTIC FARM #22 (which I am currently drawing).
We can now also put the 120 page original graphic novel, PLASTIC FARM: FERTILIZER back into print. Folks pledging at $70 or higher will get this automatically. Folks pledging at the $60 level can add $10 to their pledge and receive the book. Everyone else can add $15. (Like the other books, it will be signed.)
I'm also adding a few additional reward levels to make life easy for new pledgers and existing pledgers not locked into specific artist rewards.
Please message me if any of this is confusing. And thanks!
WHO ARE YOU?
I am Rafer Roberts, the writer and (most of the time) artist of PLASTIC FARM. My comics have been seen in anthologies such as the New York Times Bestseller FUBAR: EMPIRE OF THE RISING DEAD, OXYMORON from ComixTribe, and DISTRICT COMICS. I was the editor of the first three issues of MAGIC BULLET, Washington DC's free comic newspaper, where my comic NIGHTMARE THE RAT continues to appear. I lettered some comics in ONCE UPON A TIME MACHINE from Dark Horse Comics, I drew DOPE FIENDS OF THE ZOMBIE CAFE from Hula Cat, and my artwork has even appeared in fancy art galleries.
WHAT IS PLASTIC FARM? WHAT IS THIS BOOK?
Written and (mostly) drawn by Rafer Roberts, Plastic Farm follows the life of a man named Chester and his slow descent into complete insanity and chronicles how that madness reshapes the world around him. Chester has had a rough childhood, has a magic cowboy that rides a dinosaur living inside of his head, and is now, late in life, sitting in a nameless airport bar during a blizzard telling his life story to a group of people who really couldn’t care less.
There has already been one 350-page collection of PLASTIC FARM titled SOWING SEEDS ON FERTILE SOIL which contained issues #1-12, and a (currently out-of-print) 120-page original graphic novel PLASTIC FARM: FERTILIZER. This new book, SEASONS OF GROWTH IN THE FIELDS OF DESPAIR, is 224 pages and collects issues #13-21 and a bunch of bonus material. (Yeah, that's over 600 pages of comics.)
WHAT IS THIS MONEY FOR?
While I will be putting some of my own money towards printing the new book, I don't have near enough to pay the entire cost on my own. The $2000 will go entirely towards printing the book and shipping out the rewards. (I'm using a local printer that does relatively inexpensive high quality books, so I don't have to pay any shipping charges from the printer.) Any additional money raised will go towards bonus stretch goals, which we'll get to later.
WHAT DOES THE ART LOOK LIKE? LET ME SEE SOME SAMPLES!
The art posted above was drawn by Rafer Roberts (me) but Plastic Farm also features illustrations from a bunch of other artists. Here are a few samples of the other artists in SEASONS OF GROWTH...
(The first PLASTIC FARM book, SOWING SEEDS ON FERTILE SOIL, which you can also choose as a reward, featured artwork from Dennis Culver, Danielle Corsetto, Jake Warrenfeltz, Dave Morgan and Wendi Strang-Frost.)
GIVE ME MORE THAN THAT! I WANT TO DOWNLOAD A PDF CONTAINING A WHOLE BUNCH OF PAGES FROM THIS COLLECTION!
HOW FAR ALONG IS THIS PROJECT?
All of the comics are done. I am in the process of cleaning up some of the lettering and assembling the bonus material, but other than that, this thing is ready to go to the printer.
WHAT DO OTHER PEOPLE THINK ABOUT PLASTIC FARM?
Well, here are some reviews:
“Innovative although sincerely demented...A really strange, really engrossing good comic book” -DAVE SIM
“Plastic Farm romps through convention and blasphemy with equanimity. By turns mesmerizing and appalling, Plastic Farm never ceases its kinetic thrill ride through Rafer’s obviously damaged psyche.” -LARRY YOUNG. Publishing magnate and Comic Book Godfather
“An epic descent into madness and, not coincidentally, hilarity. This is not your garden variety insanity but the carefully cultivated kind that only a lifetime of consuming pop culture effluvia can evoke. Hide your daughters and your livestock... the era of Plastic Farm has arrived.” -ROB VOLLMAR. Eisner nominated writer of The Castaways and international heart-throb
“It will work its way under your skin until you can’t wait to see how the next twist unfolds.” -INDY COMIC REVIEW
“This has the chance to be one of the truly remarkable comic series to be produced in the last ten years” -OPTICAL SLOTH
“Filled with a bit of mystery, a little noir, cracks on religious fervor, the promise of hope, and even a little baseball, this story features a sampling of everything in order to create a whole that both makes perfect sense and is totally screwed up all at the same time. In short, Rafer Roberts knows how to tell good comics.” -PANEL PATTER
“I have to admit I still don’t get it...and what I do get disgusts me”. -JOHANNA DRAPER CARLSON, Comics Worth Reading
TELL ME ABOUT SOME STRETCH GOALS!
While it is too early to announce specifics, I am planning stretch goals (and rewards) should we surpass the initial goal. Such goals would include putting PLASTIC FARM: FERTILIZER back into print (and offering it through this fundraiser), upgrading the paper stock in the books, upgrading the covers, and a bunch other stuff. I'll send out an update once we hit the 50% mark to the initial goal.

Risks and challenges
All of the comics are drawn and complete. I plan to do some clean up work (and fix any typos I missed during serialization) before sending the files to the printer. The most difficult and time consuming aspect of this Kickstarter will be completing all of the custom sketchcards, drawings, and commissions. I feel like I have left myself enough time to get it all done by the promised time, but should more people pledge at custom art levels, I may be a bit slower getting rewards out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
