About

 Blackrose Beginnings

Blackrose Managing Partners: Mike (left) & Zach (right)

Nine months ago we founded Blackrose from a passion for sustainability and tech development. We envisioned a world where plastic was just as decomposable as paper and other disposable natural materials. With this vision in mind, we began to research and learn about how plastics can be eliminated. Upon our discovery of the fungus A. Tubingensis and its ability to completely metabolize plastics in a few weeks (rather than centuries), we decided to look into the fungus a little further. After some tests, more research, more tests and much discussion, we came to the decision to develop an entirely organic plastics elimination system.

From Vision to Reality

Since deciding to develop this system, by the generosity of interested people with scientific passion and environmental concern, we have acquired a significant portion of the resources necessary to make this vision a reality. We now stand within reach of having a fully operating, full-time research lab and prototyping crew, bringing our technology from its concept and early prototype to a functioning plastic elimination system. Kickstarter has provided us with the opportunity to finish collecting necessary resources, to purchase the last pieces of equipment we need, and to provide paychecks for the researchers and crew involved in the project. This organic plastics elimination system will change the world! With your help, we will be able to create a cleaner, more sustainable environment.

At Blackrose, we are committed to creating technology for the improvement of lives, the preservation of the environment, and the advancement of humankind. The twenty-first century has provided humankind with unparalleled opportunities. Simultaneously, we shoulder new responsibilities. At Blackrose, we are responsible for growing our opportunities in a sustainable, ecologically friendly way. Our partnership has made a commitment to developing ecologically responsible biotechnology, and from our story above, we are currently involved in the plastic waste management industry.

Everyone’s aware of how much plastic there is out there. There’s plastic in the ocean—we’ve all seen pictures of it. There’s plastic in landfills—we haven’t seen it but we know it’s there. And if you’re from the city, you see plastics on the streets—you see plastic outside on the highway. It’s one thing to go out into the ocean and collect all of it, or dig it all out of the landfill, or pick it up off the street. It’s a totally different thing to totally get rid of the plastic. You can burn it, which releases a lot of carbon into the atmosphere—not good. So, we need another solution. Our solution is an entirely organic method. We are about to launch an initiative for an entirely carbon-free plastics elimination system.

Our Research

Our initial development of unique technology has begun and is referred to as the Industrial Plastics Decomposition Cell project. The Cell will be intended to facilitate the large-scale decomposition of plastics, promoting a new, greener alternative way of handling plastic waste. The cell will use a high concentration of the fungus Aspergillus Tubingensis to break down plastics quickly. It is Blackrose's goal to produce a functional unit to be fabricated on a large scale by the end of the year 2020. As a result of this accelerated development plan, we will be focusing the overwhelming majority of our resources on this particular project. The first phase of this project involves small scale testing of the fungus in different environments and with different types of plastics. The purpose of this phase is to determine the practicality of the cell’s use with those plastics and to determine the scale at which the cell can be used. Following this phase, assuming we see success, we will begin fabricating and testing prototypes in order to optimize functionality. We hope to have a functional prototype completed by February of next year, but are uncertain about making any definite projection for this deadline because of current deficiency in funding.

What We Still Need

We have a laboratory—obviously we have staff. So, why are we on Kickstarter? While we do have quite a bit of equipment and staff, we still need some equipment upgrades and we would love to be able to staff our lab at its most efficient level—which we’re not quite at yet. Staffing at our most efficient level could allow us to complete this project as early as the end of 2020, in an ideal situation. Any of your donations and help will not be too small. We sincerely thank you for your support and desire to take part of our initiative!

Risks and challenges

Like any start-up, we face risks. The largest risk Blackrose faces at the moment is a lack of time. Research companies deal with an uneasy time/budget balance. Simply, we could run out of money before we finish creating the technology. To balance out this risk, we've carefully planned out our timetable and budget with contingency plans in case one or the other is erred.

Long-lasting design

Blackrose is committed to making the highest quality products possible. As a result, we use materials that are guaranteed to be long lasting and sturdy.

Reusability and recyclability

The plastics elimination system is designed to be continuously reusable for as long as the frame lasts. The frame itself is designed to be completely recyclable once it is no longer useful for plastic elimination.

Sustainable materials

We intend to use upcycled steel for the frame and all other materials are completely biodegradable.

Something else

Blackrose is completely committed to eliminating plastics and making our world a better place to live. Because of this commitment, we are taking every measure practically possible to be sustainable and environmentally responsible.
