Can you help us STRETCH THE GOAL!
Can you help the garden get bigger? We decided to Stretch the Goal again. If we raise another $1750 ($6000 in total) - we will be able to donate more books into the hands of children and classrooms. Plus everyone who pledges will get a postcard with the cover of Planting Hope on it.
We hope this book will inspire others to take action and have a positive impact on their communities.
Planting Hope tells the tale of a hard-working girl and a golden seed who bring unity to a divided garden. This whimsical story, written and illustrated by kids for kids, represents how PORCH (People Offering Relief for Chapel Hill-Carrboro Homes) has planted a seed that has nourished an entire community. PORCH is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization using monthly neighborhood food drives as a way of uniting thousands of neighbors in a shared mission of relieving local hunger in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, North Carolina. We are “planting hope” that the book will encourage other communities around the nation to replicate the PORCH model. (Visit our Facebook Page to follow our activities)
One of the special things about this book is the way it was created. PORCH is all about collaboration, so we partnered with two dynamic teaching artists, Susie Wilde and Peg Gignoux. Over the course of many months, they guided 30 children, ages 5-12, in an ESL classroom and a community center as they wrote and illustrated this beautiful book. Writer Wilde’s highly interactive progression of literacy activities led children from reading to pre-writing, through drafting, and into revising and editing their story. Textile artist Gignoux led a series of design sessions in which kids collaborated on art activities including sketching, dyeing cloth, and printing patterns. They then “drew with scissors” as they cut and layered their materials into vibrant collages developing setting, characters, and supporting details.
Planting Hope will be a 32-page full color 8 X 10 hardcover book - great for any age. This creative process has been generously supported by our community. So far we have raised $21,000. We need just $3,000 more to help cover the printing costs for 500 full-color hardcover copies of this book. Any additional funds will allow us to donate copies to libraries, schools, and our young writer-illustrators. Our goal is to get this book into the hands of children, adults, and communities across the country. Our dream is that the book will plant hope and inspire action to all who read it!
In addition to supporting this wonderful project - we have some treasures from our garden to share with you. The rewards for nurturing Planting Hope range from recipes, PORCH car magnets, signed copies of the book all the way to donations of 50 copies of Planting Hope to classrooms, libraries and more. Risks and challenges
Updated: Before this Kickstarter we were just $3000 away from printing and we needed your help. We are fortunate to have all the funds raised to get us through the creative process of the book and more than half of the funds raised to go to print! The story, artwork, and book design have been completed. The specs have been shared with the printer - and the printer has told us we could have the books in November! The quick response and pledges have shown that Planting Hope will go to print!
