Motivated by a desire to create beautiful garments, sisters Leah and Becky Plante have together launched their namesake line, PLANTE Clothing. Since PLANTE’s inception just six short months ago, Leah and Becky have designed a capsule collection, shot a lookbook, captured the attention of bloggers, and stocked their line in fine retailers. Now, they’ve been selected as semifinalists for the Emerging Designers Competition at Charleston Fashion Week, and they need your help to get there!

We have always loved clothes.

Our love of the craft, materials, and aesthetics of fashion started as a hobby, with Leah learning to sew from patterns and Becky scouring vintage and thrift stores for buried treasure. Leah went on to study Fiber Science and Apparel Design at Cornell University, and after graduating, quickly rose through the ranks of New York’s fashion world at Lacoste, Vena Cava, and Wink. Becky studied fine arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, all the while running an online vintage store on the side.

In late 2013, we made a pact to embark on our lifelong dream of creating our own line. Between the two of us, we had the design chops, the business savvy, and (frankly) the unflappable optimism to start our own line. And so, PLANTE was born.

Over the last year, we designed and produced the first expression of our vision, consisting of ten ecologically thoughtful, 100% silk garments. Along the way, we were lucky enough to score some press and work with creatives we admire and love. To top it all off, we were picked up by some fantastic NYC boutiques, like Albertine, Strumpet, Thistle & Clover, and The Rising States! We couldn’t believe how quickly things were taking off, but we were in for an even bigger surprise.

Our Big Break

If there’s one thing we love more than clothes, it’s Charleston, South Carolina, our beloved hometown. We have always been inspired by the stylish residents and incredible shopping found along Charleston’s picturesque cobblestone streets, not to mention the lush flora and fauna of the natural landscape. So we could hardly contain our excitement when our application for the Emerging Designers Competition of Charleston Fashion Week was accepted!

We’re honored that out of hundreds of applicants, PLANTE was selected as a Top 20 semifinalist, and we’re thrilled to show our Fall 2014 collection in the tents of Marion Square during the week of March 18th. Our pieces will come down the runway before fashion press, bloggers, and--most importantly--buyers from some of our favorite stores (both Charleston-based and beyond). There are few better opportunities for us to share our vision and grow our fan base.

What’s more, as semifinalists, we have a shot at progressing to the final round and facing off for a Grand Prize of cash and services that would give us a much-needed boost in expanding the label!

Our clothes are made of 100% silk fabric, and are produced locally in New York City. Our choice of fabric and domestic production represent our uncompromising eye toward quality, the environment, and supporting local business.

We’re proud of our work, and we want to bring our absolute best to this Fashion Week. That’s where we need your help. As young, emerging designers, our resources are very limited. Your contributions will help us cover the cost of participating in Charleston Fashion Week, and will be allocated towards:

Development Costs- patterns, muslin fit samples, and any necessary alterations.

Material Costs- fabric, notions, and trim. Silk is expensive!

Logistical Costs- airfare and accommodations- for two!

Risks and challenges

Of course, we might not win fashion week. Our fellow Emerging Designer semifinalists are all exceptionally talented, and we know that it will be a challenge to stand out. Even without the Grand Prize, though, Charleston Fashion Week is a rare opportunity for publicity, learning opportunities, inspiration, and buyer introductions. So as long as we succeed in creating our garments and sending them down the runway, Fashion Week will be a great success. We just need to get there (with our line)!
