Plane Pretend, set in McAllen, TX, December 1980, revolves around Pilar, who - along with her siblings - was separated from her parents after crossing the US/Mexico border. There is one final immigration checkpoint that the children would have to cross before their arrival in Corpus Christi, but border security is tighter than ever. Their "American" Aunt takes them in and hides them in a furniture warehouse while she "Americanizes" them. The children are informed that they will be flying over checkpoint and cannot show any excitement as part of hiding who they really are. The film explores identity, confidence, assimilation, and the excitement of both new experiences and experiences that never lose their power.
I am making this film with my very talented friends, my very enthusiastic family, and other great people that I have encountered during my time here in Austin. My producers include Marisol Medrano, a DREAMer whose last production turned Bastrop into a 1940s Nazi warzone, and Lauren Colangelo, who was distracted by Biology when she should have been making movies.
Plane Pretend is set in 1980; so not only are we looking for a very specific, nostalgic cinematography, but we are collecting furniture, wardrobe, and props from the late 1970s. We have already acquired a gratis plane, but we still need funds for minimum fuel costs to fly over the Corpus Christi coast and to secure both our generous lenders and ourselves with production and equipment insurance. We are flying some of our cast in from Los Angeles and are hoping to accommodate our locals as much as possible.
Here is a basic breakdown of the minimal budget needed to shoot the film:
Camera Department ($4000)
Art Department ($1000)
Cast and Crew Accommodations ($1000)
fuel costs ($350)
Risks and challenges
Our biggest obstacle right now are the nearing holidays. If we do not start production by early November, we will be pushing our filming to January 2014. We are trying to meet a Februray film festival deadline because we would love to premiere our film there.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
