A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

We understand that customer support and update is of great importance to us and our backers. So we are using social media for our backers to follow us. We picked several because we understand that not everyone uses the same social media. We decided to implement Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Each one will be used uniquely.
During the Kickstarter campaign, we will be broadcasting with Instagram Live every Wednesday at 7:30. A Live video in which you can view PJ reefs' live seahorses. This Instagram live feature can only be accessed through the use of a mobile phone. Also, During the live video, you will be able to get your questions answered. The live video will be shared as a story in Instagram for viewers that aren't able to tune in.
For followers that like daily updates, we will be using Twitter. We will tweet a daily update on what we are doing during the day and how the project is progressing. Also, we will share links if there are any major developments other than daily tasks.
For Facebook followers, we will also have a live video session where you can see your future seahorses and also interact with the live stream. We will be answering questions and giving updates.
We completely believe in a sustainable hobby through aquaculture. We will establish the first Hippocampus zosterae aquaculture facility. This will be part of our journey. With your help Kickstarter, we will establish a breeding facility for seahorses. With a focus on education and awareness. We plan on offering the first Hippocampus zosterae's to our Kickstarter backers through our website www.PJreefs.com.
Seahorses have a ritual mating dance and the males are the ones that carry the eggs. Above is one of our breeding pairs, and you can see the male doing a dance that involves tail grabbing. Seahorses are entertaining to watch and a unique pet that is both rewarding and educational.
The baby seahorse above is about 2 weeks old. From birth, they are perfect replicas of their parents. The young can live along with the parents because they accept the same food. The same food that you will receive with PJ reef reward. If cared for correctly you can also successfully rear several generations of seahorses in the same tank. This is the beauty of the PJ reef 2.0 system, that you can see several generations with ease.
In 2013, Paul Roncal successfully launched PJ reefs, the first low maintenance saltwater aquarium for specific corals and organism. For the past 4 years, we have been listening to our customers and improving our product.
My journey began 10 years ago while attending medical school. I always enjoyed the science and complexity of miniature aquarium. Miniature aquariums were not as popular and required a lot of do it yourself (DIY.) All of my aquariums had some form of DIY hardware. I started realizing that very specific hardware and requirements can make a miniature saltwater aquarium an easy to maintain hobby. From that idea came PJ reefs.
PJ reefs believes that smaller saltwater aquariums help sustainability and education. This is necessary to the conservation of reefs.
During the past 4 years, we've been searching for organisms that would complement such a miniature and low maintenance aquarium. We came upon the majestic and mini or dwarf seahorse, Hippocampus zosterae.
We discovered that dwarf seahorses are resilient creatures with a large amount of young. The difficult thing was that they required live food. From this we brainstormed and created a system geared toward dwarf seahorses.
Out of this PJ reef 2.0 was created. We integrated a unique feeding mechanism. Using Sep-Artemia cysts and implementing magnets that people can feed their seahorses without worrying about raising live food all the time. We also implemented a new pump/filtration system that will allow the seahorses to live in a ecosystem that is unique for their needs.
Ultimately we created an aquarium and feeding system that is specific to dwarf seahorses. We have been testing our prototype for a year and it is ready for production.
We are very grateful for our first run with you, Kickstarter. We are excited to launch PJ reefs 2.0 to you first Kickstarter.
We strive to give the best customer support by making it easy to reach us. We have set up a live online chat system on our website. If you have any questions, you can get your questions answered by clicking below.
Also, we have prepared instructional videos that will be accessible to everybody at PJreefs.com/pages/setup. Here you will find instructions on how to set up the tank in under 10 minutes. Finally, there will be small videos on how to care for your seahorses.
If you don't prefer direct chat, then you can always contact us through email at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions or comments.
Risks and challenges
We have divided our challenged into three categories.
For a Kickstarter campaign to be successful, it is of importance to have a pre-launch plan. Our pre-launch plan included several social media sites, robust email list, and followers. With this preparation, we will reach our funding goal.
Also, doing pre-market product value is difficult and sometimes can hinder future production. We have already established a relationship with our manufactures and have discussed costs. Having a financial plan is crucial for a successful product launch.
We have assembled a set of tools to maintain a steady flow of new backer. These tools will help the campaign stay focused and alive. This way you can stay connect with PJ reefs. These live tools include Instagram Live, Facebook Live, and Kickstarter Live. With greater transparency and communication our backers will feel more confident.
Communications is key as we learned on our first Kickstarter campaign. This is why we have implemented a new live chat system across our website that allows you to reach us anytime. So if you have questions about fulfillment or even want to drop by and say "Hi" we are there to chat.
Also, we will keep our manufacturers updated with production numbers. This will allow for prompt manufacturing and fulfillment.
Manufacturing & Fulfillment
We have 4 years experience with our current manufacturers. This gives us greater flexibility and trust with production timelines. We are bringing onboard 2 more manufacturing companies to expand our product line. These 2 new manufacturing companies will be an asset to PJ reefs.
The aquaculture facility will be a project in itself. We have partnered with local marine collectors. We want this project to be sustainable. It is in our model to give the respect and sustainability to any living marine organisms. Through the aquaculture facility, we want to educate and become a model facility.
Fulfillment is the most exciting part for a backer. We have made clear deadlines and milestone points. Backers will be our priority.
We hope you join us on this new and exciting journey.
