Tales from Lost Vegas is an original, 40-page, full-color comic book that tells the story of three middle school friends who discover a lost complex hidden beneath the streets of Las Vegas, where they encounter robotic ants, cybernetic mob enforcers and the floating head of Howard Hughes. It's a fun, all-ages adventure-comedy packed with witty banter, bizarre characters and genuine drama.
Written by Ed Hawkins, who also developed the concept behind 2011’s Tales from Fremont Street, Tales from Lost Vegas will be the first full-color entry in this popular series of comics published by Pop! Goes the Icon featuring all-Las Vegas-based creators, designed to commemorate the annual Vegas Valley Comic Book Fest. Tales from Lost Vegas will debut at this year’s festival, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013.
The Comic Book Fest, which is part of the city-spanning Vegas Valley Book Festival, celebrates the illustrated word with national and local creators, panel discussions, workshops, an Artist Alley, retail marketplace, children’s activities, films, music, and much more. In just five years, the festival grew from 800 attendees to more than 3,000 in 2012, and thanks to the support of efforts such as ours, it’s all made possible free of charge to the community.
As part of our ongoing effort to provide a platform for undiscovered and hidden talent from Southern Nevada, Tales from Lost Vegas will feature artwork by a handful of new and emerging talents based in Sin City, including Justin Ayers, Daniel Blodgett, Steve Benton, Kenneth Lamug and Jska Priebe.
We're looking for your help to bring this project to life and maximize its reach into the world. We know how thin everyone's dollar is stretched these days, and we think it's important that you know where your money will go. The funds raised in this Kickstarter campaign will:
- Pay for the initial print run of 1,000 copies of Tales from Lost Vegas
- Pay for production of rewards
- Pay for shipping and postage
- Pay for Kickstarter fees and related charges
We’ve created a selection of fun incentives at all donation levels to entice your support of this project. No matter what your budget, whether you’re just a comic book fan or a small business owner, there’s a pledge level that’s right for you, with rewards ranging from a printed copy of Tales from Lost Vegas all the way up to having your business’s name right above the logo on the front cover. In between, there’s original art, custom commissions, limited-edition posters, and more.
If we are blessed enough to surpass our initial funding goal, we’ve created “push goals” to ensure this comic reaches the maximum amount of people and can best reward both its creators and the folks supporting Tales from Lost Vegas:
$7,500 - BUDGET RELIEF
We can erase the burden of the Comic Book Fest’s budget by paying the honoraria to our creators ourselves.
$10,000 - SUPER-SIZE THE COMIC
We'll increase the page count of Tales from Lost Vegas to include a "Behind-the-Scenes" section, complete with Seth Kumpf's designs for all the characters & settings, script excerpts, process art, and more.
$15,000 - MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR
We’ll book a mini-promotional tour for the comic’s creators, spreading the Comic Book Festival love throughout the Southwest, and hopefully to YOUR local comic book shop or library!
Anything beyond that will go toward the development of a fourth volume in the Tales From series.
On behalf of Pop! Goes the Icon and the Vegas Valley Comic Book Fest, I truly appreciate you taking the time to learn about our project and hope you can help out by either making a pledge today, or by spreading the word via your favorite social network.

Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges in this Kickstarter campaign are minimal. The book is already written, all of the artwork is in varying stages of production and on-schedule. Our printer is secured with pricing and timeline to get the comic delivered by the last week of October, 2013.
Of course, we cannot account for unexpected delays in production, printing, shipping, etc., but this is our third go-round with this comic book series, using the same printer and process we have in the past, so we expect no bumps along the way.
Just remember: Unless we meet our $6,000 goal, we receive NO funding for this project. And then we have to turn to a life of crime to raise the money to pay for this comic. Please don't make us into villains. Thank you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
