About this project
Steve Jackson's The Trolltooth Wars is a graphic novel set in the Fighting Fantasy world of Titan. The original novel, written by Fighting Fantasy co-creator Steve Jackson, featured fan favourite characters and locations from the series, brought together in one brand new story, and introduced the world to the warrior from Salamonis, Chadda Darkmane.
The novel tells the story of a war between two evil sorcerers, Balthus Dire and Zharradan Marr. With the peaceful kingdom of Salamonis threatened by the escalating conflict, King Salamon dispatches Chadda Darkmane to find a way of either ending the war, or turning it to Salamonis's advantage. The novel was successful enough to spawn two sequels, Demonstealer and Shadowmaster, featuring the continuing adventures of Darkmane and the good wizard, Gereth Yaztromo, which were in turn followed by the four part Zagor Chronicles series.
This graphic novel is going right back to the beginning, adapting The Trolltooth Wars to bring the story to life in a brand new medium. We're sticking closely to the story established by Steve Jackson, with some minor changes for space and pacing reasons (something you get whenever any story is adapted into a new format).
The comic will bring Allansia to life like never before. Printed in softback, and featuring over one-hundred and thirty full colour story pages, in which you'll meet popular characters like Balthus Dire, Zharradan Marr, Gereth Yaztromo and the Warlock of Firetop Mountain himself, Zagor. Fans will also find a few Easter eggs scattered throughout the book, plus extras at the back.
The adaptation is being produced by experienced indie comic creators, writer PJ Montgomery (Stiffs, Dynamite, The Pride Adventures), and artist Gavin Mitchell (Santa Claus Vs The Nazis, The Samurai Slasher, Stiffs, The Pride), and has the full backing of Steve Jackson.
While the graphic novel is an approved Fighting Fantasy product, the actual production is being entirely funded by us. With that in mind, we need to turn to Kickstarter to raise those funds. We're aware that it's a lot of money, but it's all going into the book. Gavin is a full time artist, and is pencilling, inking, colouring and lettering every page of the book, all of which he needs to be paid for.
Add to that the cost of printing the book, as well as the Kickstarter rewards and fees, plus other costs involved with working on a licensed product like this, and it all adds up.
Nevertheless, it's worth it. The script is complete, and as you can see from the images shown here, Gavin is already working on the pages, and they're looking fantastic.
Here's where we tell you a bit more about the rewards we're offering for this campaign. We have badges featuring sigils for the various factions in the Trolltooth Wars, designed by Gavin Mitchell (designs shown may not reflect final versions). Anyone pledging on a level including the badges will also get a badge featuring the Fighting Fantasy logo. We also have prints, copies of the book, and the chance to appear in the book as a human, goblin or undead character. The badges and prints are exclusive to this Kickstarter, and will not be available anywhere else.
We also have a few stretch goals in mind, though we don't want to test our luck. Suffice to say, we want to bring you a fantastic version of The Trolltooth Wars, and we hope you'll consider helping us do so.
Risks and challenges
PJ and Gavin both have experience of creating and releasing independent comics. The only things currently standing in the way are time and money. If the Kickstarter is successful, this will help on both fronts. The money will be there, which also means more time can be spent on the book instead of trying to raise more funds.
If this campaign reaches its target, we will be on course for an early autumn release. We already have quotes for printing all of the items from companies who, we know from experience, will produce quality products. The only delays will be the items involving original sketches (Gavin will need time to draw these), and the books signed by Steve. We have to get the books to him and back. However, we will endeavour to get all rewards to backers as soon as is physically possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
