What is 'Tick'?
'Tick' is completed novel. It is an adventure-fantasy, aimed at young adults primarily, but with an ease of language that will be accessible to younger readers as well as touching on topics an older audience can appreciate. After five years in redrafting and editing, I am delighted to finally be able to share this story with everyone.
What is 'Tick' about?
'Tick' is the story of a young man called Tom. At the age of 18, Tom has it all: a house, a car, a sharp suit, and very soon, a business empire to inherit from his deceased father.
So imagine his surprise, then, when he wakes up one day to find he's turned into a cat.
The race is on for Tom, who must return to being a human within three days, or he will lose his inheritance to his rival, Muezza. But there is more to his changing into a cat than he'd dared to believe. With the help of his own pet cat and a colorful cast of cats from the neighborhood, Tom must make a transformation back to humanity in more ways than one.
What is this Kickstarter for?
'Tick' has been a long time coming, though not exclusively to get the writing just so: getting an agent, and publishing through the traditional means, becomes more difficult with every passing moment. In a similar way to how the movie box office has become dominated by big budget blockbusters, sequels and remakes, the book industry likewise has put the squeeze on new and original ideas too.
But all is not lost! The digital age is a wonderful thing, and now it is entirely possible to bring 'Tick' to the public, and I have a plan for this:
First, after a final edit and check, I will publish the book in e-book form. This is relatively straightforward, however to reach as many platforms as it can, and to spread the word, capital is going to be needed at some point.
Enter Kickstarter! With this Kickstarter funding, I can effectively promote 'Tick' to the world, and the more that is raised, the wider the net can be cast! And, to be transparent about this, the amount I wish to raise here is a little over my forecast budget to cover some overheads for the awesome rewards up for grabs!
The next step after this will be traditional publishing. With a successful Kickstarter and a well-promoted novel to add to my resume when I approach agents and publishers, I will be in a far stronger position to get 'Tick' on a physical bookshelf in a bookstore near you. And I will have you to thank for it!
Join me on the Journey of 'Tick'.
I believe firmly in the power of the public's will, and how the internet has enabled everyone to have a voice, and a chance. I hope you will join me at the start of this incredible journey.
To offer as much reassurance as possible to you potential backers out there, I'm offering a generous helping of free samples of the material first, so you can 'try before you buy'. I'm also aiming to be completely open about this, so please feel free to shoot me questions if you have any, and if the Kickstarter is a success, I will keep everyone update frequently on developments, including the honouring of the rewards.
Want something to sample first?
Of course, I wouldn't ask anyone to dive into something unknown (although if you are that kind of person, I salute you!), so here are some generous helpings of 'Tick' for you to taste, to get a feel for what to expect. Here's my official YouTube channel, where I read the first few chapters of 'Tick'. Enjoy!
Also, if you are not the audiobook type, you can read the same chapters on my writing blog instead:
Praise for 'Tick':
"Your story inspired me..." - Erin Hunter, author of the International bestselling Warrior Cats series
"Thought I’d take a quick peek at 'Tick' and ended up reading it all – and not wanting it to end...This story is a delight, written by a very talented author." - Katjay, member of Authonomy Community
Risks and challenges
If the funding is successful, it shall go towards two things:
First, to get 'Tick' on the e-market in places like Amazon, iTunes, various e-reader stores and so on. Some places allow free insertions, but some don't, and this is to cover that.
Second, and for the most part, towards publicity. This will be a structured, multi-format campaign, but due to the nature of the e-book format, it will be centered around online campaigns. Here are where potential risks may come in: I hope the video above gave you a taste for the style the publicity for 'Tick' may go, however, as this is my first foray into this arena, I am admittedly lacking in experience in advertising. That being said, I am doing research to combat this issue, and I will use the funds raised as effectively as possible.
The assurances with 'Tick' itself is that it is finished, and has been proof-read multiple times. However, it hasn't been proof-read by a professional editor. Now, I have a degree in this field, so I daresay I'm already well-qualified to check and edit, however even the most trained eye can overlook problems. If any errors are spotted, I will gladly replace the e-book with an updated, corrected version, free of charge.
In happier news, any products promised regarding e-book rewards is absolutely no issue, and will be delivered on time. Physical items such as printed books and mugs will be designed and ordered by myself, and I will check them over myself before they are posted to their respective backers. I will not send inferior content.
The main reason I am holding the delivery of these rewards back to June 2014 is that I wish to get everything prepared on time, to ensure everything is to the best quality it can be. Rest assured that if problems do arise, for example, being unable to deliver by the due date, I will keep everyone posted and work as hard as I can to fix that. In the VERY unlikely event that I am unable to deliver on my rewards, I will return the funding to the backer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
