Wien, a word who’s direct origins are to this day still argued— potentially meaning “bright or fair”, “forest stream” or “white base/or bottom”, all of which I find to be suitable to describe a city that in 2005 was tied for first place only with Vancouver amongst a list of 127 world cities as having the highest quality of life (according to the Economist Intelligence Unit) and then again by the Mercer Society in 2009 and 2010. Located near the eastern border of Austria, the city of Vienna was founded as Vindobona (a roman settlement) in 15 BC. Continuing to flourish through the centuries it became the capitol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1804 and has retained its significance to this day. Filled with beautiful baroque architecture, magnificent churches, palaces, gardens, the world’s oldest zoo (the Tiergarten Schönbrunn), endless winding streets, over 100 art museums (all which are as beautiful on the outside as inside) the list could go on. Thus far in my life I have been fortunate enough to have visited a number of locations across the globe as far away as Central America and China; and still this city has earned its place in my head and heart as one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities which I have visited. The history lures me in; the art enchants me; the cultural nuances surprise and delight me at every turn, so much so that I am going back this upcoming year to document what I saw the first time around and more.
My plan is to fly over to Vienna in early January, spending roughly 21 days photographing the Viennese vista. I am a student, and this city will be my classroom. At this point my itinerary essentially consists of a wake up and wander routine. I spend time seeking out a composition, once found I wait; observing the light throughout the day. Taking note of when I feel the sunlight provides something desirable to the scene, I return the next day prior to the determined time and set up my gear to properly capture these moments. I enjoy going into my work without micromanaged scheduling and expectations, what comes will come and I will be there to greet it. If anyone wishes to “commission” portraits of certain streets, or buildings or other specific locations I will be more than willing to work with you to create an image. Beyond this I will be using my knowledge of the city, and the knowledge of my camera to provide a series of photographs that will deviate far from what the general tourist might walk away with from their trip. I am intentionally visiting during this time of year; I am interested in capturing the bare winter cityscape, and hope that these conditions will provide interesting subject matter for me to work with.
The reason that I am here on Kickstater asking for your support is to help me pay for my artistic expenses. My travel, room and board costs have already been secured. The camera that I intend on using to photograph the city is a 4x5 large format camera. The benefit of using this camera is that it allows me to have complete and utter control over the final image in a way most other cameras cannot provide—allowing me to make pictures rather than take pictures— and providing me with a larger negative, which translates directly into larger final print capabilities. The camera is a perfect match for capturing architectural and landscape spaces. The drawback of using this camera is that the cost of film and processing can be rather crippling. In addition to this, once I return from my trip I also intend on producing a series of large prints of the photographs for exhibition. I have set a goal of $3,000 which will allow me to have the creative freedom needed to accomplish this goal. If you are interested in donating please do, any level of contribution brings me a step closer to my goal, and if you can’t help then please SHOW THIS TO YOUR FRIENDS! Thank you for your time.
