We’re Pete and Mike, two friends collaborating on a big idea about the future. It’s an exciting, bold experiment that’s never been attempted before, and we need your help to make it a reality.
What are we doing? We’re making a poster that celebrates an event taking place 250 years in the future. Owning this print – and passing it on through generations – is the only way to make the party happen.
The goal? To unite people across the world and across centuries in a single moment in time.
Your incentive? Be part of an epic story that will unfold over the next two and a half centuries, and help create something unprecedented to leave behind for future generations.
Sounds a little crazy, yes – but it's also fun. This is a gorgeously crafted poster – with an added bonus: there’s a meaningful message behind it all (read on!).
This Kickstarter ends on June 6th and, if successful, will contribute to our first print run of the 2269 poster. Please check the rewards and back this project early – prints are numbered and the sooner you purchase, the lower your number will be.
Thank you for your support!
There are two key parts to the 2269 project…
1. The Greatest Party of All Time. We know this might sound ever so slightly ambitious… But we all need things to look forward to. And in tough times like these, why not think big? Our hope is that 250 years from now, on June 6th, 2269, The Greatest Party of All Time will take place around the world, bringing people together in a worldwide celebration of imagination, exploration and the progress we will have made. It’s a chance to frame the vast, unknowable future in a more positive way than perhaps we’re used to. (And to build up to the big day, each year, smaller events will be hosted that help get us there – but more on that later).
2. The poster. The whole journey starts with our beautifully designed, original print, conceived as a ‘save the date’ heirloom to pass down through your family over the next couple of centuries. Our intention is that this invitation will be distributed far and wide, becoming an irresistible idea for future generations. Consider that one day your distant descendants will hold this very invitation in their hands, originally gifted from you. Each poster also comes with a Record of Owners that you can sign and date, so they’ll have hard proof of your existence.
So, with your help we’ll be ready to go. We’ve spent time creating a beautiful poster and we’re now set to print. We're looking to raise money and awareness here on Kickstarter to bring this to life.
We’d also love to find a like-minded community of those ready to think long-term and bet on the bigger picture. This is really just the first step of what should be a long, entertaining, and rewarding journey for everyone involved. We hope you will join us!
And remember: Put It Up. Keep It Up. Pass It On. :)
Designed to last
The 2269 poster will be foil-blocked on heavy, archival paper from G . F Smith designed to stand the test of time. We’re experienced in creating museum-quality artwork (one of our previous projects is part of the permanent collection at London’s V&A Museum) and are confident you will love this original print. Full details are further down this page.
More than a poster
The 2269 poster is a ‘save the date’ invitation to the Greatest Party of All Time!
It’s also an invitation to think differently. Thinking far beyond our own lifetimes may not come naturally, but it helps put things into perspective.
Why is it helpful to think like this? Because the story we tell ourselves about the future is critical to how we each view the world. It impacts how proactive we are. It helps us consider others. If we think the world is already lost, we are motivated to do very little. When we recognise the reality of a distant future, with billions more people to come after us, then we’ll have a better mindset to work towards leaving a healthy legacy.
By owning the 2269 poster and passing it down through your descendants, you can even enjoy the present more, knowing you will be stirring the collective imaginations of your extended family and friends for generations.
Why 2269 matters today
Your 2269 poster is also a way to get a healthy perspective on today.
And given the current state of the world, we need some perspective. The future is often depicted as a scary place, used as a warning or a threat. By making the future more tangible (June 6th, 2269 is a fixed date we know will happen), this project can be an antidote to the anxiety we all can feel when things look bleak. This way, maybe we won't forget that we are all part of a much bigger picture.
Put it up. Keep it up. Pass it on.
At its heart, 2269 is a conversation starter, one that begins with a couple of friends. And it’s designed to slowly build momentum like a rolling stone, gathering pace with every new owner over time.
By putting your 2269 print up on your wall, keeping it there, then eventually passing it on to the next generation, you’ll be part of a thought-provoking story that unfolds over centuries. A small gesture today might just lead to an extraordinary event that brings people together.
Inspired by Stephen Hawking
One of our previous projects was creating the Time Traveller's Invitation poster to accompany Stephen Hawking's famous experiment. His idea was to prove whether it was possible to travel back in time. He held a party for time travellers, yet told no-one about it. Then, the next day, he put up a poster advertising the party. In this way, it would only be possible to attend if you could travel back through time.
This got us thinking. If something as complex as time travel could be definitively proven using just a humble poster, then what else could a poster achieve? Perhaps just by distributing the 2269 poster far and wide – and adding enough time for the idea to spread – an extraordinary global event can be brought into existence.
So how do we make the Greatest Party Of All Time happen?
There are a few things needed to make any party a success.
1. Save the date. You should tell people that it's happening and ask them to save the date. This is where the poster comes in. June 6th, 2269: put it on your wall and mark the date in your calendar.
2. Secure the venue. Now this is a big one, because the venue for the 2269 party is planet Earth. If we want our descendants to truly enjoy themselves, we should help make sure that the planet is in good shape. And that means looking after it – and after each other.
3. Guest list. That begins with YOU. This first poster is in English because that's what we know. But we will be producing versions in every major language, because EVERYONE is invited. (And if you are a multilingual designer who wants to see your country represented, drop us a line).
4. Prepare. Look at a calendar and you’ll see that all holidays recognise past events or people that made great contributions in the past… We’d like to introduce a day that instead looks to the future, as a way to prepare for 2269. We’re calling it One Day.
Starting this year, we’re setting aside every June 6th to look forwards – both in our personal lives and also globally. This can take many shapes… A promise to your future self, lunch with friends, or a wild blow-out. Two people or two hundred. It’s up to you. Our plan this year is to get some friends together, have everyone contribute to a charity that makes the future look a little more rosy, and enjoy the night. We’ll aim to grow the event every year.
So that’s our plan, but we’d love to hear any ideas you might have too. It’s one day a year to consider how we improve the future for others. And if we keep it up, and pass it on, 250 years from now we might just be ready for the big one…
We all work best when there's a deadline. So, this is it. 2269 is a goal to work towards. The future awaits!
A Gift From The Past
These words are found right at the top of the 2269 poster. Not only is the 2269 poster a 'gift from the past', it comes with a unique document to prove it…
Every poster comes with its own Record of Owners. This works a little bit like a library card, with space for each owner of the print to write their name, location and the date on which they received the print.
In time, this card will tell its own story. Imagine discovering you’ve been left a gift from a distant ancestor with their name handwritten to prove it. That magical, tingly feeling you may be feeling is exactly right – that’s the power of being connected to your own history. Now, imagine you’re the person who has started this incredible chain of events.
It's a high-quality gift too, for all ages. The 2269 poster is beautifully foil-blocked on heavy, archival paper and every single print is individually numbered (a bit like the Beatles' White Album) so the lower your number, the more special and potentially valuable it will be. That's another reason to back this project early.
Make It Your Own
If you want to be remembered a little better still, we are making it possible to customise your poster and change the words at the top. Perhaps you would prefer "A gift from [your name]" or "A gift from [you and your partner]" on your copy of the poster. Anything is possible – just take a look at the customisation options further down this page.
You have questions. We have answers.
If there’s anything you’d like to know about the 2269 project – like how we chose the date or why it’s 250 years away – just click the Ask a Question button in the FAQ section and we’ll reply with the answer.
The 2269 poster: All the details
The poster is titled 2269: A Global Celebration of Imagination, Exploration & Progress and will be printed on heavy (270gsm), archival paper that's:
- Made from 100% virgin ECF fibre, from well-managed forests
- Acid free
- Lignin free
It's a natural white colour and will be foil-blocked using a dark pewter-coloured metallic foil which will look stunning in juxtaposition with the matte, slightly textured paper.
Every print will also be individually numbered in black using pigment ink.
The poster measures 350mm x 495mm (13.75" x 19.5").
Will the poster age?
Yes, very slowly. However, cared-for properly it should outlast you and everyone you know. We fully expect that by the time 2269 comes around, your descendants will have a well-weathered antique print to remember you by.
Each print will come with a guide to proper care as part of the Record of Owners document (see details further up this page).
We have chosen a beautiful, dark pewter-coloured box-frame for the 2269 print. Our framing will be done by eFrame, a Guild-Commended framer in the UK, using archival-quality materials.
The framed print measures 412mm x 557mm (16.2" x 21.9") and is 35mm (1.4") deep. Frames will arrive ready to hang, with the Record of Owners document attached to the back in a pouch.
We will use optically-clear acrylic in place of glass for all framed prints, to avoid breakage during shipping.
NB. The framing style we are using is not the same as that shown in the short movie on this page.
Customisation – five prints per order
We are making it possible to create a customised version of the print with your name on it. These are very special items and, for each order, we will create a new brass die with your chosen words and foil-block this in place of the line 'A GIFT FROM THE PAST' at the top of the print. Your message can contain up to 55 characters (including spaces). We retain the right to veto anything inappropriate! You will receive FIVE unframed prints.
If you choose the customised 2269 poster, we will reach out to you after this campaign is completed so that you can tell us what message you would like to have on your prints.
Prints customised in this way will use a different numbering convention to the regular poster. And because we anticipate fewer orders for these, your print number will be much lower if you choose the customised version.
Who are we?
The 2269 project was created by Peter Dean and Michael Ogden. This is our first Kickstarter, but not our first collaboration, nor the first print we've created.
Although this is our first Kickstarter campaign, our interest in crowdfunding goes back a few years. We previously co-hosted CrowdScene, a successful podcast in which we interviewed dozens of entrepreneurs about their campaigns.
Peter Dean runs Kite where, in 2012 he painstakingly recreated the Victorian circus poster that inspired John Lennon and Paul McCartney to write the song Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite!. The following year, and with a little help from his friend Michael Ogden, he created the Time Traveller's Invitation poster at the heart of Stephen Hawking's famous experiment. In addition, Peter runs a creative agency in London.
Michael Ogden is an award-winning Creative Director. He has successfully developed original concepts across multiple platforms. Michael has directed a virtual reality experience now out in 130 arcades, co-authored 2DO Before I Die, a non-fiction book of ideas published in 9 languages, worked extensively with Pixar’s story team, created and co-hosted CrowdScene, a podcast about entrepreneurs, and led a creative concepts team at Sony PlayStation.
Risks and challenges
Over the last seven years, Peter's business 'Kite' has shipped thousands of prints all over the world to happy customers. Kite will be handling the fulfilment of all 2269 Kickstarter rewards so we have no worries about that part of the project. Peter and Michael will also personally oversee all aspects of the poster production to make sure that the print satisfies our high standards.
We have painstakingly researched the most appropriate paper, foil and numbering technique for the 2269 print, as well as the framing style. We are confident that there will be no changes to these things. However, it is possible that, once the foiling die is manufactured and we move into production, changes will be required in order to produce a print of the quality we require. So it is sensible to at least state that the specification we have provided is subject to change – but only where a change is necessitated by production techniques.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
