In 2017, we decided to try our hand at something new and give our players a chance to experience what it's like to actually sit in the cockpit of a giant robot (the size of a tall building!). We’ve released a short PC VR singleplayer experience under the name War Robots VR: The Skirmish. It's available for free on Steam, and has garnered positive reviews and respect from the community and press.
"This team is already doing a lot of the really hard things about VR development well. Bottom line is the game is already a lot of fun. Now we just need a lot more of it to love for even longer." — VRHEADS
However, unfortunately, it doesn’t support the option to fight other players online. After The Skirmish was released, a lot of players wrote to us asking for a full-blown multiplayer VR action shooter.
"The game’s short teaser looks quite slick, with mechs firing imposing gatling guns at one another as storms roil in the sky above. Gameplay is smooth and responsive, giving the player full control of the battles at hand." — Pocket Gamer
Now, thanks to the participation and positive feedback from this great community, we've decided to go for it! All we need is your support.
War Robots VR is a multiplayer, virtual reality action shooter set in the War Robots universe. Team fights, customization, deathmatches and giant robots, each with its own unique strengths and abilities — the game is one of a kind and in a whole league of its own. But that’s not all: we’re also crafting an exclusive gaming experience with a whole new level of immersion.
It's going to be a full-blown, session-based PvP game for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, where players pilot robots and battle against people from all over the world. Our ultimate goal is to help you experience what it feels like to be inside one of man’s most powerful creations, without having to dive too much into the nitty-gritty.
On the one hand, we want to keep things as realistic as possible. There are lots of variables to keep track of if you want to play smart, like your robot’s stats and abilities, safe windows when you can counterattack, landscape advantages/disadvantages and so on. But at the same time, you won’t be too occupied with simulator-y details like heat management. War Robots VR just isn’t about that.
You can try playing The Skirmish (or watch a full walkthrough video instead) to get a better idea how War Robots VR will feel in general, but don’t forget that a full multiplayer game will be balanced differently. For example, unlimited ammo will be the first to go. Reloads and cooldowns are important mechanics in the War Robots universe, and learning to work them to your advantage is what separates great players from just good ones.
In the base game we plan to include 2 game modes, more than 5 maps and nearly a dozen unique robots and weapons, that will combined provide more than 30 playable and balanced setups. That's right, more than 30 differently equipped giant robots with their own advantages to choose from. Wage war your way!
As for the game modes, first of all you can expect deathmatch, a traditional free-for-all mode where everyone fights everyone else. Just imagine all the scrap metal on the battlefield! And secondly, a team battle. Players will be formed into 2 teams and unleashed to wreak havoc upon each other. The number of players in a single battle is something we'll be working out during the internal testing and beta, however we're aiming for something in the range of 3v3 to 6v6, so 6 to12 players total battling in a single match.
We're keeping the praised control scheme of The Skirmish with some robot-specific additions. You'll have a choice of three playing options: keyboard and mouse, a gamepad or motion controllers (that will emulate gamepad). It appears that extended in-house testing allowed us to alleviate some of the most popular issues players have with VR action shooters these days. We haven't received a single report regarding motion sickness or any difficulties with controls.
"It is the mech game you’ve always wanted" — Appspy
The gameplay and graphics will receive a great deal of polish but will remain the same at their base. We did receive some praise here as well, just check out this amazing video for a review by SweViver!
And plus, if for whatever reason you don't have a VR headset, the game will also be compatible without it. Of course, in headset-less mode the game won’t be as immersive, as we strive to optimize everything first and foremost for virtual reality. However, if you don’t want to invest in VR gear, the game will still be playable.
We plan to release War Robots VR by spring 2018, with a closed beta available a couple months before the release. If we get all our stretch goals funded (each of them adds a little to the development time), we’ll still release the game on time, and gradually update it with the planned features.
Tiers & Rewards
*Reward images are approximate. Final design may be subject to change, but will definitely be related to War Robots VR. We'll showcase the final designs in campaign updates after launch.
Estimated delivery for rewards will be at the same time when all bundle items are expected to arrive. Digital rewards other than the War Robots VR download will be delivered shortly after the campaign is funded.
Production of physical rewards will take roughly 3-4 months, and shipment might take another few days to a few weeks depending on the location. Therefore, you can expect physical rewards to arrive within a span of 4-5 months after the campaign is funded.
If we’re lucky enough to get our base goal funded, we've got lots more features we’d like to add in the game as well! We’ll update our stretch goals as they get funded, so check back frequently.
Our team consists of experienced and passionate developers who joined forces to make War Robots VR a hit game. We all love playing and making action shooter games, and we’ve spent a lot of time working on different projects, so you can trust that we know what we’re doing!
After many years working on the mobile version of War Robots, we’re basically putting ourselves to the test. We’ve even formed an independent studio in the company to build War Robots VR based on different values.
Compared to the mobile industry, expectations are different for PC and especially VR titles. After The Skirmish, an experiment we brought to life as an independent team, we are confident that we can make the transition to a full-fledged game for bigger platforms.
Now, to get greenlit and deliver War Robots VR, our team has to prove that a project like this is something people truly want to see released. This is where we need your support most.
Risks and challenges
This isn't our first rodeo. After developing and operating War Robots with its over 1.5 million active daily players, along with various other projects, we come well-prepared for anything that might happen during the production cycle.
With The Skirmish we worked out an excellent movement and control scheme, and the War Robots VR closed beta will help the game get just the right shape and balance.
Our ultimate goal is to create an exciting, polished and balanced VR experience for our players. Worst case scenario, we’ll either extend the closed beta a bit or release the game as an Early Access title and polish it up over the course of a few weeks.
