“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” -Carl Jung
In the imagery of the Wayward Dark Tarot are the archetypes and symbolism of Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot deck, mirrored and modified into a chthonic afterlife evoking the beautiful and the macabre.
Each of the seventy-eight Tarot cards has been painstakingly researched and lovingly drawn. The deck has a limited palette of whites and blues on top of black backgrounds, giving every unique card a consistent look with the rest of the deck.
Cards are printed at the standard Tarot size of 2.75x4.75" on gloss-coated 300GSM card stock, intended for durability and vibrant reproduction of both the darkest and lightest elements of the imagery. Each deck is housed in a custom-labelled tin designed to provide protection and longevity even while bouncing around in a full backpack while you’re on the go.
Each illustration was drawn at poster size and shrunk down for every card so as to fit intricate details and symbolism into the entire deck. Every deck comes with a booklet that acts as a guide for the meanings held within the cards. For those seeking more depth than the short booklet, the collector’s edition will come with a full printed book, and every backer will have access to a downloadable PDF with all of the info included within.
Familiarity with the Thoth Tarot will give you additional appreciation (and likely, additional critiques) of the Wayward Dark Tarot, but is not needed to get started. With abbreviated meanings in the guide book serving as an accessible starting point and the full book giving more intricate details, the Wayward Dark Tarot is meant for all levels of readers. As it may be considered a reflection of the Thoth deck, it is the same for your own inner thoughts and imagination. Look to the cards and you might discover a path to your subconscious entangled within the archetypes of the Tarot.
“Let the inner god that is in each one of us speak. The temple is your body, and the priest is your heart: it is from here that every awareness must begin.” -Alejandro Jodorowsky
There are many ways to use a Tarot Deck. It can be for card games like Tarocchini, occult purposes like divination, and in pursuing improvement through self-reflection and self-work. There is no right and wrong way to use your deck, just so long as the way you use it is a way that works for you.
That said, there are some things to be aware of with the Wayward Dark Tarot. Most notably, the suits have had their physical objects removed and instead refer purely to their elemental associations, which are as follows:
- Wands → Fire
- Cups → Water
- Swords → Air
- Discs → Earth
The pips depict small creatures and objects from the Wayward Dark. The court cards are a blend of more involved humanoid creatures, the fae, the magical and mythical, and the spectral. The Major Arcana are the most involved of the cards, keeping their associations with letters, numbers, planets and elements. They represent the deepest and most impactful cards of the deck.
Most depictions follow closely my specific artistic interpretation of the cards as described in Crowley’s Book of Thoth with an eye toward maintaining the magical underworld themes that the Wayward Dark inhabits. I’ve done my best to edit my take on these cards into a cohesive whole that pays tribute to its source while maintaining their own aesthetic that doesn’t merely clone the existing deck.
The deck theme is meant to evoke a familiar underworld that never was. Magic and death and beauty, a timeless place of spectral darkness and haunting afterlife. Within it, impossible creatures and mysterious humanoids. It is neither a heaven nor a hell but instead an underworld sanctuary. An unruly, exploratory place whose darkly mysterious inhabitants possess a sinister beauty.
Funding after the initial goal helps me to recover rare unexpected costs, provide better product, and cement further campaigns in the future. As I’ve managed with previous campaigns, my goal with this one is to provide fast fulfillment and shipping after the funding period.
Should we fund, I’m looking forward to offering these additional rewards:
- $7000 - UNLOCKED - Kickstarter specific Magus card! Every deck will ship with a bonus Kickstarter specific Magus card printed just for this campaign.
- $8000 - UNLOCKED - Kickstarter specific Priestess card! Every deck will ship with a bonus Kickstarter specific Priestess card printed just for this campaign.
- $10,000 - UNLOCKED - White Rose enamel pin! Every Wayward Dark deck now includes a special white rose soft enamel pin for backers!
- $12,000 - UNLOCKED - Mystery card included with every deck ????? ????????
Out of the goal of $6000, funds are estimated to be allocated accordingly:
- Estimated shipping costs - 20% ($1200)
- Estimated Kickstarter fees - 10% ($600)
- Estimated production costs for the decks, boxes, booklets, pins, and altar cloths - 70% ($4200 + personal funds added)
This timeline is an estimate, not a guarantee, but each of my previous campaigns have seen backer rewards sent out within a very short time frame and I hope to continue that trend with this one. My goal is to get the majority of decks (if not all of them) shipped in time for the holidays. Should we fund, the timeline looks like this:
- October 2019: The campaign ends and Kickstarter begins collecting pledge money. I’ve finished work on the stretch goals as we hit them and have digital files ready to send to the printers. Digital rewards are sent out as soon as pledges lock down (usually a week after the campaign).
- Late October- Early November 2019: Money is transferred to my account (usually 2 weeks after the campaign ends) at which point I’m able to place orders for all of the separate items. Decks should begin shipping by mid November to early December.
- December 2019: I will continue shipping product to backers with the goal of getting it into your hands by the holidays.
- January 2020: Except for multiple unforeseen delays or drastically long overseas shipping factors beyond my control, backers should have their rewards by now. Be sure to fill out your backer report as soon as possible to get your rewards in time!
Hello internet friends! I’m James, and Pixel Occult is the name I’ve been working under for over five years now. I’ve completed (with all stretch goals met or exceeded) three Kickstarter Campaigns. Two of those were Tarot Decks based on the RWS, titled the Sinking Wasteland Tarot and the Neon Moon Tarot, respectively. The third was a cutesy cryptid oracle deck, the Adorabyssal Oracle, which funded a year ago.
I’ve been running an Etsy shop since 2016 and my reviews consistently note my shipping speed and product quality, among other very nice and wonderful things that this community is kind enough to praise me with.
I am an indie creator whose decision making process doesn’t include target audiences and market research, but rather starts with an idea of something that I’d like to see exist in the world. Thanks to all of the incredible supporters out there, I’m able to continue making my dark, odd, and fun projects. I’m so very pleased to have you all sharing my enthusiasm for these creations!
I’ve been hard at work on this deck in the background since 2017 and have spent the past year focusing on it entirely. It’s provided many unique challenges and as with each of my decks, has taught me a lot along the way. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it!

Images represent prototypes in progress. Final products may differ.
I do offer worldwide shipping but I’m sorry to say that I have little control over shipping costs or customs fees. What I charge is what it costs me to ship. If you order from outside of the US, please be aware that I’ve done my best to keep weights down, prices affordable, and shipping tracked. Even with all of my precautions, some things are simply beyond my control.
Finally, a big thank you to all of the backers, friends, strangers, and fellow internet oddities whose enthusiasm and support continues to allow projects like this to exist and thrive.
Risks and challenges
This is a low risk campaign for backers. I am juggling a couple more production shops in this campaign than I have in the past but they are shops that I have done some preliminary work with and, in the case of an unexpected delay with any of them, I have found back ups that I can bring in if necessary.
I have prototypes of decks, boxes, and booklets in hand and arrangements for other product already underway. Except for stretch goals, all artwork is already completed and just needs product to be printed on.
For my previous Kickstarter campaigns and my Etsy store, I have repeatedly received feedback for fast shipping, sturdy packaging, and satisfaction with the product.
Should we fund, I am ready to commit myself (and some helpful recruits if necessary) full time to fulfilling orders and getting product out the door as quickly as possible. It is my goal with this campaign to repeat the speed of shipping and delivery that I’ve maintained in my previous campaigns and Etsy store.
From one internet oddity to all of you, thank you for checking out this campaign! <3Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
