A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Pixello: High end 3D Scans and Game avatars for everyone!
Body scanning has quickly gone from Sci-Fi to reality but is still too expensive and complex for global availability. At Pixello, we are bringing change to that by making full color 3D body scans fast and cheap!
With our system, you will affordably be able to obtain a full 3D body scan, like a 3D picture, that you could use as a 3D avatar in your favorite game or print as a 3D statue.
In the future we plan to broaden our horizons and expand in other fields such as the health & entertainment industries.
Imagine a surgeon being able to showcase the expected result of reconstructive surgery to their patient on their own 3D model, or an actor on a movie set with full makeup and clothing being scanned rapidly for later inclusion in VFX parts.

What is new with Pixello?
Unlike traditional 3D scanners that fall into either Classical Photogrammetry or Structured light scanners categories, Pixello is a new kind of process.
Pixello achieves its goal by choosing a completely different approach compared to existing technology: our scanner targets only humans and is not designed to operate on arbitrary 3D object. That enables us to make HD Body Scanning affordable and fast.
Current solutions usually have the following drawbacks:
- A long processing time (minimum 8 hours for a high-quality render in some photogrammetry software we tested for comparison). That means you won't be able to get your deliverable before leaving the shop, and the shop itself is limited to a few scans per computer per day, so the customer ends up paying more to cover for the high hardware costs.
- Really bad reconstruction on complex body parts (hair for example) requiring lengthy manual 3D work to touch up and sometime completely redo some body parts, this too increases the time to delivery and the price as it involves paying a 3rd party artist for each model!
- In the case of structured light scanning: long scanning time! Must not move (or as little as possible) for up to 20 minutes with a single scanner.
In contrast Pixello offers:
- Near immediate capture time (in roughly 80 milliseconds). No need to stand still!
- Orders of magnitude faster reconstruction on our own servers. You can see the result in 3D on the shop tablet before you even leave the shop!
- No touch up required! You get your 3D scan or game avatar by email within minutes!
All of these points affect the shop as much as the customer and enables them to provide scans at a much lower price point. When we tried to get scanned in a shop, we paid over 150€ "just" for the scan and the quality was subpar. Compare this to our own prices !
Will you be the hero of your favorite video game?
We aim to have a scanner in every major city. Once Pixello launches, you will be able to go to your nearest Pixello scanning center and have your own personal 3D body scan made. You will get a code by email as a backer that will serve as payment.
To promote the use of personalized avatars, Pixello will provide third-party developers with a set of free dedicated SDKs (software development kits) for all the main 3D engines, starting with Unity and Unreal, as well as a general-purpose SDK. If demand arises, we are open to creating custom SDK for other engines.
With these tools, a game developer can add support of Pixello's avatars in their game in very little time (typically under one hour for an indie developer) as we will provide not only the basic functionality but, if the developer wants to do a quick integration, the in game UI for importing our avatars!
Since all our SDKs are free, all indie developers will be able to support Pixello avatars! For gamers it means more compatible video games! It's a win-win combination!
How it works for you
Pixello's technology, using Raspberry Pi ecosystem.
Pixello is half software half hardware. The hardware part would not have been possible without Raspberry Pi and their camera module.
The mix of high quality and low cost of Raspberry Pi cameras meant we could afford to put over 220 of them in a single machine, something that would be prohibitively expensive if we used $300 consumer cameras. On top of that since the Raspberry is completely open, we did not have to depend on proprietary solution and wrote our own software to synchronize the shoots, retrieve them and send them to our servers.
All in all we end up with nearly 2 GigaPixels of input to process thanks to over 220 cameras. Not only does our custom software handle large sets very fast, but it gets access to a lot of color data from many angles for a very high-resolution clean texture. Ever seen the completely washed out textures on 3D Scans? We don't do that at Pixello!
Aside from Raspberries and their cameras we also use custom hardware from our friends at Pi Supply (a modified version of their Pi PoE Switch HAT that was successfully backed by you Kickstarters!) that enables us to half the cable length and cable management complexity in our machine, their product shaved off half a kilometer of cable per machine!
About our customalgorithms
Going from pictures to a 3D textured model is a solved challenge, doing it with a good texture resolution and no artefacts? not so much! And doing it without any touch up? That only really works on static objects so far. Pixello does all of that and in a fraction of the time and this required a lot of research and development work, we have started working on the software part in January 2015!
Our processing is massively parallel : we can make use of massive servers and have the speed scale nearly linearly with the number of cores (this has been tested on "smaller" servers than our target with > 40 cores and ended up with 38.5X the speed of a single threaded version). We are able to harness the power of high-end hardware to keep a no-quality compromise 3D model generation at a very fast pace on cost-efficient hardware thanks to our very fine tuned algorithms.
As for the algorithms themselves, well that's our secret sauce and we can't say much! But what we can say is that thinking about this problem in a radically different way than solutions that can scan arbitrary objects allowed us to come up with solutions orders of magnitude faster while upping the quality significantly!
The Pixello Founders
Thanks to the great IT experience of Pixello's founders Ronan and Jacques, who have a combined 50 years of experience in Architecture both in software and infrastructure, everything is about 80% done. However, we have invested most of our own savings and an enormous amount of time into this project and need to have the final proper prototype to finish parts of the development.
Our last step!
We have built a 252 cameras prototype that was fully functioning. This enabled us to do almost all the development from picture taking up to very high-resolution point cloud generation, however we couldn't DIY the lighting and lack of shadows properly and never got a "closed" object because of those artefacts. This is why we need to have a proper industrial prototype to finish the model generation.
The next step is the last step!
With your help, we would build the last prototype for the Pixello 3D body scanner, that will perfectly match our specifications and can be reproduced on a large scale, ready to be deployed in all future Pixello centers. We will also be able to spend the ~= 6 months leftover of software development (making the avatar SDKs, validating the polygonization, adding a third-party component to optimize the 3D model and support exports into many formats etc.)
Our technology choices enable us to build a machine at a very affordable price point and those savings, along with those from our very fast software, enable shops to provide fast and cheap scans and avatar, and open up the market for 3D body scans.

Risks and challenges
While a lot of risk is behind us, notably pouring our money in the first prototype and development there are still heaps of challenges ahead. We know what we need to change from the first prototype but it's always possible we need to iterate a second time.
We also know we will never be able to get a 100% scan success rate as humans are simply too different so we are working our best to reach a score as high as possible (we expect around 90% at release going up to 95-97% in the next 5 years post release)
Our machines are planned to last for years in high stress environments, this is one of the key points we will work with on the prototypist as it naturally flows from our scanning requirements (the green interior needs to stay clean and non reflective, even after hundreds of people walked on it) so you can be sure the greatest care will be put in making the machine durable.
As for the product you receive, the bulk of it is digital and will last forever.
