WHAT IS IT?
The Pi Supply is the solution to all of your Raspberry Pi power management problems. It is an “intelligent”, ATX style power supply switch for the revolutionary Raspberry Pi computer. It allows you to leave all of the power wires from the “wall wart” all the way through to the Pi permanently connected with just the quick push of a switch to turn the power on or off. Simple!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Once you have finished using your Raspberry Pi, you just shutdown using the sudo halt command, and then a couple of minutes after the full and safe shutdown the Pi Supply cuts the power to the computer. From this point, once again, all you would need to do to restore power to the Pi is touch the on button.
There is also a hard power off button for use in emergencies which immediately cuts the power to your Raspberry Pi. Remember to only use this button when absolutely necessary (e.g. Pi has been frozen for a long time) as it risks corruption of the files on your SD card if done at the wrong moment.
What makes Pi Supply superior to other makeshift solutions available is that it allows you to restart the Raspberry Pi using the sudo reboot command without the power turning itself off. Perfect!
PUTTING IT TOGETHER
We have made the Pi Supply a self-solder kit which is quick and simple to put together – even for an absolute beginner to electronics. This means as well as being a nifty little bit of kit to manage your Pi’s power, it is also a great intro to electronics and soldering. As you can see from the pictures the input and output of the Pi Supply is fed by a standard USB connection, and we even provide you with the USB cable you need so that this unit, once soldered together, is essentially “plug-and-play” with your existing “wall wart” power supply unit.
We have even packaged the circuit into a small profile so that it fits neatly into your workstation. Pi Supply is an essential piece of kit for all Raspberry Pi users!
I am sure a lot of you will be wondering if we will make the PCB designs and schematic available...the answer is YES! As soon as the Kickstarter campaign is over, we will be uploading the PCB schematic and Gerber files both to our website and to Thingiverse and various other places. We want as many people to benefit from this product as possible...and if they want to make it themselves on a breadboard, proto board, or any other medium then not only do we want them to do it - WE WANT THEM TO TAKE PICTURES!!
Furthermore...if you can make improvements on the design that makes us even happier.
REWARDS AND DELIVERY
We already have the design and a working prototype so this is essentially a group buy style project. All we need is 50 people to sign up to receive a Pi Supply to get the product to you at a bargain price!
Therefore this project is 100% risk free - once we reach our funding target we can then place the orders with our suppliers and everything will be on its way to your doors very soon.
As well as the donations from THE FIRST EDITION reward, we will be donating 5% of the profits of this Kickstarter project to The MagPi Magazine and another 5% of the profits to the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
So not only are you helping to get this project off the ground - but you are also supporting two other great causes as well.
How to add extra kits to my pledge?
- If you would like to add another blank PCB (with no components) to your pledge, please add £8 (+£3 for international shipping)
- If you would like to add another Pi Supply kit to your pledge, please just add an additional £15 to the total amount (+£3 for international shipping).
- If you would like to add another Raspberry Pi + power supply to your pledge please add £45 (+£5 for international shipping)
- If you would like to add another ULTIMATE KIT to your pledge please add £60 (+£5 for international shipping)
Obviously we will be throwing in extra stickers with these too!!
At the end of the Kickstarter campaign, we will send out a survey with an option to tell us about any additional items you pledged for.
Risks and challenges
There are not many risks and challenges because, as stated above, this is essentially a group buy. The PCB design is already finalised and tested and is working great.
We already have production quality units in hand and they have been confirmed to be working correctly.
The only risks and challenges are the supply of the PCBs and other rewards themselves, and the reliability of the shipping networks.
We have made sure to get quotes from various suppliers for both PCB manufacture and component supply, which should mitigate any delay should either of them not be able to fulfil our orders in time. We have also made sure to use commonly available components, so that they can easily be sourced from a variety of suppliers.
In terms of shipping, the kits will be assembled as soon as the materials arrive with us. This will not be more than a couple of weeks after the end of the Kickstarter project, so everyone will have their kits shipped out before the end of March 2013!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
