What is PaPiRus?
PaPiRus is a versatile ePaper display HAT for the Raspberry Pi with screens ranging from 1.44" to 2.7" in size.
We are very excited to offer this very interesting HAT compatible display breakout for hackers who want to start playing with small ePaper / eInk displays in their Raspberry Pi projects.
What is ePaper Technology?
ePaper is a display technology that mimics the appearance of ink on paper. Unlike conventional displays, ePaper reflects light – just like ordinary paper – and is capable of holding text and images indefinitely, even without electricity.
Because of this, ePaper displays and Raspberry Pi's are a match made in heaven as together they use a very small amount of power whilst still bringing a display to your project.
The display does not require any power to keep the image and will stay 'on' without any power connection for many days before slowly fading.
Of course, it's also daylight readable and is very high contrast.

For the last eight months, we’ve worked hard to get the PaPiRus details nailed down, so you don’t have to worry about them. We are now on our 5th generation design (v1.5) which has been refined based on testing and feedback. The full set of features are shown below.
- Raspberry Pi HAT compliant design
- Interchangeable screen sizes (1.44", 2.0" or 2.7")
- 32MBit Flash Memory
- Battery Backed Real Time Clock (CR2032 battery included)
- Easy plug and play operation with onboard EEPROM
- Digital temperature sensor and thermal watchdog
- GPIO breakout connector and solder pads
- Optional reset pin header (for wake on alarm with RTC)
- 4 x optional slimline switches on top
- Suitable for 3V3 or 5V power and logic - use with RasPi, Arduino, BeagleBone and many more.
The displays options included in this offering are all true ePaper / eInk graphical displays with the following sizes and resolutions:
- 1.44" diagonal and 128 x 96 pixel resolution
- 2.0" diagonal and 200 x 96 pixel resolution
- 2.7" diagonal and 264 x 176 pixel resolution
The software is all open source and available from the RePaper GitHub page.
The good news is that rePaper/PDI have provided a suite of example code for the Raspberry Pi along with datasheets and other useful information. Tons more information including wiring diagrams, datasheets & and links to example code are available at the main rePaper website! There is even code for how to use the ePaper screens with Arduino and BeagleBone.
We have also just introduced a £45k stretch goal (see below) in order to provide some enhanced software above and beyone what is included in the free rePaper offering from Pervasive Displays. The plan is to include an easy installer for the software, a load more example scripts (including one to push the Raspbian desktop to the ePaper screen) and potentiall even a web app for managing what is on the screen. As part of this we will also provide tutorials on how to use all of the interesting new features.

The development of PaPiRus has been an exciting journey and here’s everyone who’s involved in the PaPiRus project...
Aaron Shaw - Project Leader
Aaron is the brains behind the PaPiRus. He has been working hard to bring this product to fruition for over 8 months. Being the Founder of Pi Supply, Aaron has been designing, creating, and selling many Raspberry Pi adds on for over 3 years! Without Aaron, this Kickstarter wouldn't have been possible.
Jurijs Jonass - Engineer
Jurijs is the guy who brought PaPiRus to life. With 10 years + in PCB creation, Jurijs knows how to make all chips, bits and LEDS do exactly what they need to do to make sure PaPiRus is awesome and working correctly.
John Whiting - Marketing
John is the guy behind the coordination of this campaign and getting the word out about PaPiRus. He's been the decision maker on tasks aimed at helping to build awareness of the Kickstarter.
Jaden Randall - Photography and Video
Jaden is the "guy behind the camera" who shot and edited the entire Kickstarter video for the PaPiRus campaign.

Louis rocks the design for the PaPiRus! All the epic graphics and animations you see on this page were crafted by Louis.

A big thank you goes out to Nick Pestell for his help with creating some awesome tutorials for the PaPiRus so all our backers can dive straight into creating cool projects. We would also like to thank Charming Su and others from Pervasive Displays for all their technical help with the ePaper screens for this project. Risks and challenges
There are not many risks and challenges because, as stated in the video, we have a 5th generation prototype. The PCB design is already finalised and tested and is working great. We have production quality units in hand and they have been confirmed to be working correctly.
We have quotes from a variety of suppliers for both PCB manufacture and assembly and have line up our ePaper screen supplier. This should mitigate any delay in case any of them cannot fulfil our orders in time.
In terms of shipping, the PaPiRus boards will be shipped out to our backers as soon as the materials arrive with us. This should be by mid June for the PCB assemblies and the beginning of July for the ePaper screens. So everyone will have their kits shipped out before the end of July 2015 and arriving shortly after!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
