THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! WE ARE SUCCESSFULLY FUNDED AND PAST ONE OF OUR STRETCH GOALS!!
WHERE TO BUY AFTER KICKSTARTER ENDS?
If you have found this page after the end date (8pm UK time, 8th June 2014) then please visit our website at www.pi-supply.com in order to purchase a Bright Pi. The direct link is at http://www.pi-supply.com/product/bright-pi-bright-white-ir-camera-light-raspberry-pi/ however this may change in the future. We will also be releasing further products, product information and downloads and various other bits and bobs on our website and Kickstarter in the future. So make sure to keep an eye on our blog at www.pi-supply.com/blog and please follow our Facebook and Twitter pages at www.facebook.com/raspisupply and www.twitter.com/PiSupply. Thanks for all of your support!
WHAT IS IT?
The Bright Pi is a breakout/add on board for the Raspberry Pi (can be used with other I2C devices too - Arduino etc.) which adds both visible bright white light and infrared illumination to the Raspberry Pi, for use with the Raspberry Pi camera module, the Pi NoIR camera module or for any other project which requires bright LEDs!
Bright Pi plugs directly into the I2C interface on the Raspberry Pi, and is completely controllable via the command line, using Python and lots of other programming languages as well. The brightness of the LEDs is fully controllable using the onboard LED driver chip.
Want to use colourful LEDs instead? Well there is certainly nothing stopping you. The Bright Pi will allow you to control any ~5v LEDs using the I2C interface on the Raspberry Pi, so you could substitute the provided LEDs with the colourful LEDs of your choice!
The Bright Pi has M2 mounting holes, just like on the camera module and Pi NoIR and can therefore be mounted directly to the camera module using the screws and spacers provided. It also has been verified to work great with the camera mount kit from Pimoroni, as seen in some of the pictures on this page.
The Bright Pi is the perfect accessory for any project which utilises either the Raspberry Pi camera module or the Pi NoIR but just needs a bit more light, in a small and lightweight package!

WHY A KIT? WHY NOT SURFACE MOUNT?
We love electronics kits for a multitude of reasons - they are fun to put together, you get a sense of achievement at the end of it, they are great for learning about soldering and electronics and many many more reasons...
At Pi Supply we are quite keen on the whole education and fun aspect of the Raspberry Pi and computing and electronics in general, so we feel that a kit is much more worthwhile to all of our backers.
However, you don't need to be a soldering god or an electronics pro to put our kits together - we make them simple enough even for absolute beginners to put together.
We have finished the design of the board and the circuit completely. An early work-in-progress design can be seen here:
Using the finished version of this layout we have set out on a production run of 20 printed circuit boards with our supplier of choice in order to check the quality. We are extremely pleased with the outcome, and think you will be too:
We have been performing tests with 10 of the boards, however we are delighted to say that we have the remaining 10 available to our backers in the FIRST EDITION reward. Pledge at this level and you will also be sending a donation to both the Raspberry Pi Foundation and The MagPi magazine - 50% of profits from these pledges will go to the Foundation and the remaining 50% to The MagPi.
We have also lined up supply of the components from various suppliers and are happy with the quality of all of the different components.
The packaging of the final product will be in an anti-static bag with all the components and stickers as can be seen here:
REWARDS AND DELIVERY
We already have the design and a working prototype so this is essentially a group buy style project. All we need is 100 people to sign up to receive a Bright Pi to get the product to you at a bargain price! Therefore this project is 100% risk free - once we reach our funding target we can then place the orders with our suppliers and everything will be on its way to your doors very soon.
Once the Kickstarter campaign is finished, and assuming we have been successfully funded, the timeline will be as follows:
- one to two weeks to receive all the required parts from our suppliers
- two weeks to finalise everything, assemble rewards and ship out to our backers.
So we estimate it will take approximately 3 to 4 weeks to fulfil all of the Kickstarter rewards. However, we have placed a fulfillment date of August on the rewards to manage expectations in case of any manufacturing delays (up to 2 weeks allowed) and also to make sure this includes the typical delivery time for worldwide delivery (2 to 3 weeks, depending on location) but we hope to be able to fulfill the rewards before August wherever possible.
As always with projects from Pi Supply, this project will be released as open source as soon as the Kickstarter project is over. The files will be available to view and download from our website at www.pi-supply.com as well as on Thingiverse.
WHO ARE WE?
Pi Supply started in 2013 with a project to bring a Raspberry Pi power switch to life. We successfully funded this project on Kickstarter, however that was only the beginning. We then opened a web store at www.pi-supply.com and have begun to fill it with cool things.
However some of the cool things we want to fill it with just do not exist yet - which is why we are bringing them to you here! We have lots of ideas for Raspberry Pi add on boards and acessories and we want to bring those to you over the coming months using Kickstarter as a sounding board for these ideas.
So far we have already had three successfully funded Kickstarter projects, and this has inspired us to keep reeling them out (we already have 6 more in various stages of planning!). Thanks for your help and support in bringing these ideas to reality.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Thanks for looking at our project and for your support in bringing it to life. Even bigger thanks if you have made a pledge to our project. Even if you can't support with a pledge, why not help us by spreading the word on Facebook, Twitter and any other social networks or blogs you use? And whilst you are there, why not like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter at www.facebook.com/raspisupply and www.twitter.com/PiSupply respectively.
KICKING IT FORWARD
This project is part of the Kicking it Forward movement! What this means is that if this project is successful, we will pledge 5% of the profits from the finished project back to the Kickstarter community to help fund the dreams of others. Read more at http://www.kickingitforward.org/ This is something we think is really important to keep this fantastic Kickstarter ecosystem going. And a great way of saying thanks for all the much needed support we have received!
Risks and challenges
There are not many risks and challenges because, as stated above, this is essentially a group buy. The PCB design is already finalised and tested and is working great.
We already have production quality units in hand and they have been confirmed to be working correctly.
The only risks and challenges are the supply of the PCBs and other rewards themselves, and the reliability of the shipping networks.
We have made sure to get quotes from various suppliers for both PCB manufacture and component supply, which should mitigate any delay should either of them not be able to fulfil our orders in time. We have also made sure to use commonly available components, so that they can easily be sourced from a variety of suppliers.
In terms of shipping, the kits will be assembled as soon as the materials arrive with us. This will not be more than a few weeks after the end of the Kickstarter project, so everyone will have their kits shipped out before the end of August 2014!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
