The year is 1882, an era of peace has flourished since the end of the Airship Wars, and European Scientific Exploration is at its peak. The VonKlank family, made famous for their innovations in Dirigible technology, has turned their eyes to the depths of the sea. The VonKlank sisters have developed submersibles capable of long distance travel, and Vanessa VonKlank prepares to test the limits of the craft...
This project is a small Steampunk “comic” book. Unlike most sequential work the story is not being told in panels. Instead, an illuminated journal tells the tale of scientific explorers deep under the Atlantic Ocean. The journal is designed to give the appearance of a facsimile copy – rough edges and water stains, hand-written notes, drawings mounted to the page.
The Voyage is the culmination of almost a decade of back-burner work! I began some of the concept work in College, and many of the pieces were produced as portfolio work. While I have been honing my skills in ink, I had lacked the digital skills to bring it all together to fit my vision. Four years of working on my main comic project have given me the confidence to more forward on VonKlank's Marvelous Adventure!
Meet the Crew of the R.S.V. Conch!
Vanessa VonKlank – Captain
Madam VonKlank is the eldest daughter of the illustrious VonKlank family – pioneering scientists and daring explorers. She is brusque, yet charming. Having been raised in such an illustrious family she is equally at ease attending state dinners or adjusting engine gaskets. She has a paralyzing fear of heights.
Charles Harvey – (Junior) Engineer
After a sudden illness struck Ms. Godfrey, her apprentice was drafted in to take her place on the expedition. He is bright, and a quick study of mechanical systems. But his lanky figure puts him in a tight spot while fixing systems on a small submersible. He did not realize they would be going quite so deep.
Edward Tillingast – Navigator
After many years of piloting the experimental crafts of the VonKlank family Edward has gained a reputation for being stoic under duress, and withstanding the temperaments of their captains. He has a knack for learning languages, and his interpretation skills have saved many a lost vessel (when his navigation skills failed.)
Helga Frigdotter – Mechanic
A self-taught mechanic, Helga made the acquaintance of Mdm. VonKlank in the Bergen port. After an unsuccessful bid to join the ships crew, she stowed away in a crate of supplies and made surreptitious improvements to the ships engines to prove her abilities. After being released from jail, she was immediately hired into service.
The Major reward is, naturally, the comic itself! 24 pages of daring adventure and discovery!
Additionally, there are a number of delightful goods on offer! A full set of 10 device cards - art with flash fiction on the back
A plethora of original art from the project will also be available for our higher tiers, as well as custom portraits!
I am Pink Pitcher, I am a full-time independent comic artist. My main project is Root & Branch, an epic fantasy graphic novel. It began publishing in May 2015 and is still ongoing. You can read it here, or enjoy it in print! I've run three Kickstarters over the last three years to print the first three volumes, and volume four should be ready for print in the fall.
This project is my first major Steampunk piece, but I have been working in the genre for many many years! The last 9 years I have taken part in a local Steampunk convention, selling costume accessories, original art, portrait commissions, and flash fiction. You can see more of my work here.
The funding needs for this project are pretty small, but raising the money ahead of time allows me to print a larger run and keep the costs down. My experience has helped me better estimate shipping costs and turn-around times. If the project exceeds funding goals, a larger print run can bring down costs further and allow me to include extras for Kickstarter backers!
STRETCH GOAL #1
If we can reach $750 by our Funding Deadline, all physical backers will receive a Sweet Sticker with their Schwag!
Risks and challenges
This will be my fourth Kickstarter, so I have some experience under my belt. However, there are always challenges! Most of the artwork and writing is complete for the project.
But, this will be my first time working on pages of this layout, and working with a multitude of digital assets to achieve the look. I have a wealth of resources – a community of helpful artists, and the software needed to make things happen. If anything, the print date may be delayed because of problems.
My printer is a local shop, I like supporting small presses and saving the time and money of shipping. But, if that doesn't work out for some reason, there are many online companies that can print at a reasonable price and turn-around.
