About

Pinko is a biannual magazine of gay communism. We provide a platform for serious discussion of capitalist sexual relations from a communist perspective. We take up questions of sexuality as they contribute to the movement to abolish the present and build our capacity for collective survival. We publish new essays, interviews, translations, worker's inquiries, and reprint older texts from dormant traditions of the gender struggle. We pay our writers, too. But we need your help.

Update II: We are astonished — you've doubled what we initially set as our goal before the first week is even up. Thank you! At this point, we're able to fund our entire first issue's budget and can now start thinking about adding the components of our plan that we had dreamed of but weren't sure we could cover. Surpassing our next target of $20,000 would let us cover programming like talks, film screenings, and parties, produce special-edition zines like the one included in the rewards, start planning our second issue, and more. If you want to get your hands on the first issue, act now — it's selling fast!

Update: Holy shit, we made it to our stretch goal of $10,000 in less than two days! Thank you so, so much to everyone who supported us. We knew there was an audience for gay communism and now we get to deliver. But there's still more to go. Our budget for the whole first year is $14,000. If we can raise that now, we'll be able to focus all our energy on producing the first two issues, and fund a larger initial run. Let's make it happen!

Us printing our first zine

Twice a year, we'll send you a beautiful edition of our latest print issue. In between, we'll post articles on our website, sell cute merch (no totes, but fanny packs or "bum bags," depending on where in the world you are), and offer periodic print zines. You'll be able to subscribe at various levels of support once we get our payment system set up. For now, we need to raise at least $7,000 to print and distribute our first issue.

Backers will get a secret video of us operating this heavy machinery

What to Expect

Our first issue is already shaping up to be iconic. We have:

- Lou Cornum on the tribe in the gay imaginary, and how to think of collectivity beyond family and the nation

- ME O'Brien on the communization of care and social reproduction after the revolution

- Jasmine Gibson on Kuwasi Balagoon's prison letters

- Clandestine Whores Network's speculative fiction on the near future of sex workers' struggle

- Excerpts from the Trans Oral History Projects interviews with Paris Milane and Cecilia Gentili

- Hector Lionel's dispatch from the uprising in San Juan

And more!

The many shades of Pinko

Who We Are

We are a team of writers, editors, scholars, organizers, theorists, teachers, social workers and designers. We are putting our cumulative years of experience in publishing, organizing and being gay into this new magazine, and will be running it collectively and independently. All of us have day jobs but have committed to seeing this project through.

Why You Should Donate

Addison assembling the zines

Everybody deserves a beautiful magazine that is committed to liberation from sexual and gender oppression which also has an analysis of what that has to do with capitalism. Your support will help Pinko build a collective foundation for thinking gay communism.

The money we raise will go to funding further print production and distribution, building out our website, setting up the infrastructure for an annual fundraising party and quarterly readings, talks, and conversations, increasing our writers fees, and if we're extremely successful, conducting a nationwide tour.

You can get this beautiful poster if you donate $5!

Risks and challenges

We face a materially and ideologically adverse media landscape. It's expensive to run any sort of publication, let alone a print one, and audiences are dwindling. Publications are folding left and center, while what queer community media remains has little to no connection to the history of international revolutionary struggle.

That said, we believe there is a significant unaddressed readership for the kind of work that we are doing. Less than half of all millennials have a positive opinion of capitalism, and less than half of them identify as straight. But current popular left publications are all implicitly straight, while queer publications only flirt with some brand of left-liberalism. We provide a clear alternative.

If we are able to fund this initial print run of our first issue and attract a significant subscriber base, we calculate we'll be able to run off of subscriptions and direct sales after the first couple years. By keeping costs low with donated editorial labor and cultivating a community of readers, we anticipate a stable operation that won't have to rely on regular fundraising drives.
