Hey now! We’re Jess, Levi, and Melissa – the team behind the new comic book series:
Update - July 18: Stretch Goal 3 unlocked! Every backer at the Superstar level or above will receive an acrylic charm of Kai from PiNKHEARTS and Hawaii! Thank you! We now have our collective eye on the final Stretch Goal... at $5,500, PiNKHEARTS Issue #2 is a go!! We're in the final week of the campaign -- let's get there!!
PiNKHEARTS is a celebration of vulnerability, inclusivity, and self-discovery – the grand trifecta of a successful karaoke community, like the one we have here in Portland, OR, where co-creators Jess and Levi became fast friends. And, with the incredible art of Melissa Capriglione, we’re able to bring the world of PiNKHEARTS and its diverse cast to brilliant, colorful life in this first 22-page issue!
Issue #1 of PiNKHEARTS finds protagonist Kailani reeling from signing divorce papers with her now-ex-wife. She’s feeling completely adrift in Portland, 10,000 miles from her home in Hawaii and on the verge of taking a one-way trip back home. But something unexpected happens when she reluctantly accepts her friend Tom’s invite to meet up at PiNKHEARTS, Portland’s most popular karaoke bar.
When Kai steps into the karaoke room and glances up at the stage, it's... well, as the Pet Shop Boys sing in “Love Comes Quickly:” Just when you least expect it, just what you least expect. PiNKHEARTS offers the potential for a new chosen family, comprised of people like the electric Robin Starlight and house KJ Noah.
Will the potential of a place in Portland that finally feels like her own be enough to convince Kai to stay? Will PiNKHEARTS become the cornerstone for Kai to build a new life upon, one that balances the excitement of reinvention with the integrity of being exactly who she is?
We created PiNKHEARTS as an uplifting story for a challenging time, because so many of us can identify with feeling unwelcome and out of place these days. PiNKHEARTS is a fish-out-of-water/finding chosen family/LGBTQ+ story set in the identity-questioning world of 2019. We see it all through the eyes of Kai, who just wants tomorrow to be a little bit better than today. Some days, that means succeeding at being her authentic self. Some days, that means not panicking over whether or not she can make rent. And some days, like the day we meet her in Issue #1, that means finding exactly what she needs right where she is.
We can’t wait to get Kai's story -- and the world of PiNKHEARTS -- into your hands!
Jess Crayons is a poet & singer in Portland, OR. She lives with her beloved cat Charlotte Sometimes. She currently works as a content writer and moonlights as a freelance editor. As a Midwestern transplant who has made the Pacific Northwest her home for over eight years, Jess delights in the local karaoke community and all the friends she's made within it.
Levi Buchanan is a writer and videogame industry professional living in Portland, OR, with his silly British Shorthair cat, Orson. His short film, “We Said Forever,” is in post-production. Levi also digs cooking, karaoke and taking therapeutic drives with the top down.
Melissa Capriglione is a comic artist, writer, and illustrator from Indiana who has been self-publishing the webcomic "Falconhyrste" since 2015. With a BFA in Drawing and Illustration from Herron School of Art and Design, she breathes life into her colorful characters and universes. She likes Shiba Inus and hip-hop, but is too terrified to sing karaoke.
Special thank you to Kelly for sharing her insights and experience to help bring Kai to life!
Funding for PiNKHEARTS goes towards paying the artist (hey: always pay artists!), production of books and rewards, shipping, and some Kickstarter fees.
Rewards for PiNKHEARTS include physical and digital editions of Issue #1, as well as your name on a dedication page as a way of saying thank you for supporting us and the mission behind this book. But we have more to offer, including cameos in the comic!
At the “So Good Up There!” tier, not only do you get your hands on the comic book, you’ll also receive really cool stickers. In addition to a sheet of PiNKHEARTS stickers, you’ll also receive an ultra-cool "Karaoke Forever" sticker designed by Portland artist M. Sabine Rear – oh yeah, community, commitment, and vulnerability!
You know how when a friend makes you something, it just means so much more? Well, Jess is crocheting PiNKHEARTS pins for the “Superstar” tier! Each one is imbued with love and appreciation for joining us on this journey!
We have exclusive Kickstarter PiNKHEARTS prints of Kai and the cover for backers at the "Song Book" level. (You also start getting extra physical copies of the comic book at that level and above!) And for you amazing people that wanna express their “Star Power,” proudly wear a PiNKHEARTS t-shirt with the winky-heart. All shirts are black, but there are size and neck options!
UPDATE: We also just added a new tier, "Perfect Pitch." In this tier, Melissa is offering a color, full body commission of you or the character of your choice!
And finally... In the upper tiers – “Lyrical Prowess” and “Karaoke Royalty” – we have some cooler-than-cool rewards. Is there a songwriter inside YOU? Write lyrics for the PiNKHEARTS performers to sing while they’re onstage! Or... why not BE a PiNKHEART and get up on that stage yourself? We have TWO opportunities to appear as featured singer in Issue #1 – how awesome is that?
Risks and challenges
The script is complete. Several pages and the cover are complete, including finished pages not on this campaign page (it was a lot of scrolling...). The rest will be finished by October 2019. Thanks to Melissa’s experience with successful comics Kickstarters, we have a great (and reliable) printer lined up and ready to go. If PiNKHEARTS is funded, we will keep backers informed on our progress every step of the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
