Nick Bounty and the Dame with the Blue Chewed Shoe

Hello folks! My name is Mark Darin. After nearly 14 years writing and designing some amazing experiences with Telltale Games, they have sadly closed their doors. The details of which are tragic and shocking for myself and all the employees who were laid off without warning or any severance pay. But like they say, when one door closes another one opens, and that door just might lead into the dimly lit office of Nick Bounty.

If you've played Tales of Monkey Island, Puzzle Agent, Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People and of course The Walking Dead (Specifically Season 1 episode 2... the one with the cannibals) then you know my work.  Check out my IMDB page for a more complete list. I've made and shipped a LOT of games, and I promise to put just as much heart and passion into this one as well.

Now feels like a great time to return to my indi roots and continue making the story and character rich games we all love.

Nick Bounty and the Dame with the Blue Chewed Shoe is a comedic spoof on classic film noir detective movies as well as a narrative driven adventure game inspired the classic adventure games of Lucas Art and Telltale games. It's a little bit Maltese Falcon, a little bit CSI, and a little bit Naked Gun. The story follows detective Nick Bounty and his quest to be taken seriously as a real detective. As the case unfolds, he becomes entangled in an absurd mystery that threatens to end his life... and his newly hired partner's too!

The Dame with the Blue Chewed Shoe is the third game to feature Nick Bounty as the down-on-his-luck detective, but you don't need to have played either of the first two games to enjoy this one.  Each game is a stand alone story to be enjoyed on its own. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't go back and enjoy those titles, and you can do it right now FOR FREE!

Download and play the first two adventures for free!

(Note: These were made WAY back in the early 2000's as Flash games and do not represent the higher quality goals of 'Nick Bounty and the Dame with the Blue Chewed Shoe'.)

After discovering the naked body a young business woman buried in a playground sandbox, detective Nick Bounty sets out to solve the murder of the dame with the blue chewed shoe.  But a case this big is too much to handle alone, time to hire a sidekick!

Nick Bounty is sick and tired of working bottom of the barrel cases involving fake animals. He wants to be taken seriously as a crime solver. So when he obtains a police scanner that let's him get a jump on the best cases, he soon finds himself heading up a legitimate murder case!

It's not long, however, before the fish-tie wearing detective is in over his head and he'll have to hire a sidekick to boss around and make him look good... err... help him solve the case.  Can Bounty and his new partner catch the murderer in time?  Well, that's up to you.

 Key characters:

  • Nick Bounty

The down on his luck, fish-tie wearing detective.

  • Sia Leyter

The murder victim.  A Sales Rep for a local manufacturing company that was recently made Head of Marketing.  Could a jealous co-worker have bumped her off? Or could she have been involved in something more sinister?

  • Dr. MacDonald Stuffins

The coroner. He hates you.  And he hates puns. This should be fun.

The potential sidekicks:

You can only hire one!

  • Emily Blackwater

A tough as nails ex cop who doesn't follow the rules and only works alone.  She's ready to hit the streets and anyone on them to track down information on the murderer.

  •  Zachary Forsythe

One of those unofficial police psychics who claims to get into the mind of the murderer. He wants to advance his career by becoming an official psychic detective, but is he ready?

  • Walter Walterman

He’s old.  Like, could’ve been a bus boy at the Last Supper, old.  A cranky old-school tough guy who doesn't take any crap, but might take a few naps here and there.

Here's our predicted development cycle (based on the minimum backing level).

We love making games!  Everything that Pinhead Games has ever produced has been a labor of love from a team of volunteers who just want people to enjoy the games as much as we do. But we really want to make the best game we possibly can, and quality cost money. Plus we'd really like to compensate the people who lend their tremendous talents to raising the quality level of the presentation.

We started with a low goal because this is our first kickstarter project and we honestly aren't sure what kind of reach we'll get.  We're hoping to reach our goal to fund the project at it's most basic level, but obviously more pledges will mean better quality!

Additionally, if we are able to see overwhelming support for this project, it will allow me to pay it forward and contract some of the other amazing talent who recently lost their jobs at Telltale Games and help them keep food on the table.

Each tier add additional rewards.  The $1000 tier includes everything!

* Images are subject to change.  The art displayed here is place holder.  New artwork will be showcased as it becomes available.

Our base goal of $10,000 will allow us to make this game using pre-made affordable assets. While the game will still be fun and enjoyable, additional funding will allow us to invest in improving the overall quality of the presentation for a richer and more polished experience.

  • $30,000 - Custom graphical assets to give the game a unique look of it's own, including environment art, character models and animation.
  • $40,000 - High quality voice production to bring the characters to life.
  • $50,000 - Custom Music tracks that support the story and mood.
  • $60,000 +  Anything additional raised will go toward improving quality across the board and allow us to consider additional platforms.

The dollar amounts above represent goal tiers and the and the way we'll prioritize improving our game assets.  It is not a representation of how much will be spent in each category.

If funding exceeds $60,000 I pledge to reach out to reach out to my former Telltale colleagues who also recently lost their jobs and offer contract work where I can.

Pinhead Games has been dedicated to bringing quality Point & Click adventure games to the gaming community since the early 2000's.  Perhaps the most famous of these games are the Nick Bounty games, a pair of comedic Film Noir inspired mysteries, and The Adventures of Nick & Willikins

While Pinhead Games has worked with a number of creative volunteers over the years, the core members of the team consist of Mark Darin, Ron "AAlgar" Watt, and Jason Ellis

Mark is the founder of Pinhead games and has been making video games since the late 1980s.  For the last 14 years he's worked as a creative director, lead designer and writer at Telltale games, working on award winning titles such as: The Walking Dead, Tales from the Borderlands, Tales of Monkey Island, Puzzle Agent, and Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People to name a few.

Ron is a Seattle-based comedy writer-performer. He is the co-host of The Post Atomic Horror podcast (the most comprehensive Star Trek podcast ever produced) as well as the creator/producer of the ongoing comedy podcast Sarcastic Voyage, currently in the form of the old-time radio inspired Sarcastic Voyage Theatre.

With Pinhead Games, he has co-developed the critically acclaimed point-and-click adventure games Brain Hotel and The Adventures of Nick and Willikins. He has also contributed to the development of all of the installments in the Nick Bounty series.

Jason is a writer, director, and performer in NYC small theaters.  His notable theater works include Barbarian! (one of new york's first hip hoperas), the horror-comedy Night of the Touching Zombies, and the horror-comedy-documentary The Last Temptation of Keiko. As co-artistic director of Figment Theater, Jason Ellis has written and/or directed over two dozen original theater works, mostly musical,  to “off-off” and cabaret stages in New York.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge we face is how a changing budget will affect our production schedule. The schedule listed above is based on what can be accomplished with the base budget of $10,000. You'd think that more money would make the development faster, but the opposite is actually true. Higher quality takes longer, requires more people and more coordination.

This just means that we'll have to adjust the schedule as we go, but you'll be updated every step of the way.

Having plenty of experience in project leading, I can assure that while there might be delays, there won't be and endless string of them leaving you wondering what state the project is in. The design and script are already solid meaning that we will not be frivolously adding additional features as we go along. I am dedicated to polishing the game we have and not re-inventing it just because a new "cool idea" comes along... that's a good way to spiral into development hell!

One thing I have learned from working at TTG is that gamers would rather wait a short while for a better game than have something rushed out and incomplete.
