As a magician I am always looking for unique playing cards. I have been studying the art of magic since the age of 6. A few months back I was inspired for a deck of cards unlike any others. With your help and the Kickstarter community, this dream of the Méliés playing cards can come to fruition.
In 1902 a French director named George Méliés came out with a revolutionary film titled "A Trip to the Moon". The film was about a futuristic voyage to the moon, where there they have the first encounter with aliens on the big screen. Watch the original movie below:
This deck was designed with numerous different pieces of inspiration from the movie.
The back design highlights the "rocket in the moon's eye" imagery considered one of the most iconic parts of the film as the cards focus. The rest of the deck shows other imagery like the aliens and the stars in the background of most scenes.
Other iconic images from the movie were taken, re-drawn by hand, and then modernized in illustrator.
I Designed the deck with help from my grade school friend, Logan Max. He did an incredible job taking my vision and expanding it then turning it into something even beyond my imagination.
We spent the majority of our summer break going into freshmen year of college working on various concepts. Below you will see the initial inspiration, to the first hand-drawn rendering, and then the premature computer sketches to the final design.
All designs shown are 99% complete besides the card box, although any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Méliés himself had a fascination with magicians and playing cards, naming his movie house the “Theatre of Illusions” after the release of A Trip to the Moon he then began working on 1904’s film “Les cartes vivantes” ( The Living Playing Cards) A comedy film about playing cards, view it HERE.
The Méliés playing cards will be printed at the United States Playing Card Company, which prints the standard for playing cards, Bicycle. Among other brands these cards will be of utmost quality. I have chosen the cards to be finished with an air cushion finish; this will make the cards appealing to both card collectors and card handlers.
Through a partnership with Jamie Grant, I am offering a VERY limited amount of Anything is Possible bottles with Méliés inside. For more info go to Jamie's website by clicking HERE.
All posters will be limited to 100 pieces each signed and numbered.
With your help we can make this deck a reality. My initial goal of $11,500 will pay for the printing of the cards, custom box, jokers, and ace of spades. Stretch goals include, metallic inks, a limited edition "white" version of the deck, and custom card clips by Joe Porper.
Risks and challenges
My risks taken in this project was personally funding the design of the cards, video, and advertising of the Kickstarter page.
After the project is funded successfully the wheels will start turning and I will personally oversee everything from the printing of the cards, to the shipping of the product to you. By doing this I have cut the risk that you are taking to as minimal as possible.
Challenges are working with all of the printing companies on the decks, poster, and t-shirts. While working on a budget that ensures you get the best price imaginable.
If you have any questions or concerns please ask away through my Kickstarter. Without your support this project would not be possible, thank you!
