What is PiJuice?
As one of the smallest systems around there’s so many amazing things you could do with the Raspberry Pi if it was self-powered and portable. With PiJuice we want to provide not only the best portable hardware/software solution, but also a set of inspiring and affordable guided projects for fun and learning in the real world.
PiJuice Under the Hood
For the past year we’ve toiled and sweated over the technical minutiae of PiJuice so you don’t have to.
- Onboard 1400 mAh "off the shelf" Lipo / LiIon battery for ~6 hours in constant use! (with support for larger Lipo Battery of 5000 or 10,000 mAH+ to last up to 24 hrs +)
- Full UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) solution.
- Integrated RTC (Real Time Clock)
- On board intelligent on/off switch
- Low power deep-sleep state with wake on interrupt/calendar event
- Programmable multi-colored RGB led
- Full power management API available to Raspberry Pi OS with auto shutdown capability when running low on batteries
- Raspberry Pi HAT compatible layout, with on board EEPROM for easy plug and play operation
- Low profile design, to fit inside lots of existing Raspberry Pi cases!
The real time clock (RTC) on board will let your Pi know what time it is even with no power input or internet connection. Alongside this is a micro-controller (MCU) chip which together will manage soft shut down functionality and a true low power deep sleep state and intelligent start up.
You will be able to always keep track of the charge levels with the built in tri-coloured RGB LEDs, and since the PiJuice will use up to just five of your GPIO pins (just power and I2C), the rest are free to diversify your project even more. The stacking header allows you to continue to use your existing HATs and add ons with PiJuice

New maker projects include a build your own Pocket Pi, compact camera, and an awesome Pi games console. You can now get all these projects in a new makers kit pledge (either as a To-Go version or without the raspberry pi/camera module included.)

Whilst fitting the PiJuice perfectly this will also feature transparency for the camera, weather proof glands for connecting wires, and a modular design to grow with the size of your system!
UNLOCKED! £100,000 - Tech tweaks - We will add some additional functionality to the PiJuice including an intelligent and configurable external watchdog timer for added reliability, configurable I2C addressing for extra flexibility and more TBC.
UNLOCKED! £120,000 - Larger onboard battery - If we hit this stretch goal, instead of using the "off the shelf" 1400mAh Motorola battery, we will develop a larger on board battery. Who wouldn't want the extra juice?

Meet The Team
We're a team of robot geeks, students and designers, and were passionate about empowering young people to understand and master the technology of today and tomorrow. The Raspberry Pi is totally amazing, but teachers, students and all of us at home often find it hard to start and diversify projects. That’s why we've designed PiJuice to make learning and creating with the Pi simple and fun! Here’s everyone who’s involved...
Aaron Shaw - Project Leader
Aaron has been integral to bringing the PiJuice to Kickstarter. Being the director of Pi Supply, he has been conceptualising and producing Raspberry Pi add ons and other products over the past two years. With the PiJuice he has helped develop the product and has tied it all together for our campaign.
Harry Gee - Research & Development
Harry is the one who came up with the original idea of the PiJuice and has been the main driving force behind its development into the great product we think it is. As the founder of Agilic, inventing awesome Pi based robots is simply what Harry does! His desire to provide a superior power module to make great remote projects more viable is what lead to the concept of the PiJuice.
Jurijs Jonass - Lead Engineer
Jurijs is the genius behind the system specification of the PiJuice. With more than ten years experience, he is a wizard in the dark art of PCB design. He makes sure that all the chips, switches and bits do exactly what we want them to in order to deliver the awesome performance of the PiJuice, and bring you all the capability you need for your project.
John Whiting - Marketing
John has been a major part of getting the word out and bringing the PiJuice to where it is now. He’s the one behind all the decisions that have helped to build awareness of the PiJuice, and will continue to steer it in the right direction with the help we hope you will give us!
Nick Pestell - Projects and Software
Nick has been spending a lot of time developing the awesome projects and tutorials that will form part of the PiJuice learning experience. Nick has done all the hard work - so you don't have to!
Louis Reed - Design
Louis rocks the design for the PiJuice! All the nice graphics you see on this page were crafted by Louis and he will also be assisting with getting the project tutorials looking great.
This Kickstarter project could not have got to where it is without the support of many incredible people! Our awesome logo was designed by Tom Corbett of Rook Design Ltd and our video was done as a joint effort between Jaden Randall, Antonio Mayor (Deep O Productions) and Pablo Cuevas (Cuevas Photography). Thanks also to The Arts House Cafe in Bristol for allowing us to film inside and to James and Karen for the use of their beautiful living room! John Whittington from Bristol Hackspace also gets a special mention for his support on getting the games console working nicely.
There are obviously countless others from Bristol Robotics Lab and the general community as well as all our families who have provided support and feedback throughout the project. We couldn't have done it without you!!
Risks and challenges
Since the PCB design is already finalised and tested and is working great, there isn't much risk associated with the design. We already have production quality units in hand and they have been confirmed to be working correctly although some adjustments will likely be made for mass production.
The main risks and challenges are the supply of the PCBs and assembly of the associated electronics as well as the reliability of the shipping networks.
Fortunately the manufacturer we are working with is one we have successfully used many times before and we know and trust they can delivery to schedule. As an established and busy ecommerce business Pi Supply are easily capable of handling the shipping burden of this project and have all the frameworks in place to achieve this quickly and efficiently. Whilst delays do unfortunately sometimes occur with shipping networks these are relatively infrequent and we will do our best to mitigate these at the time of shipping.
We have made sure to get quotes from various suppliers for the supply of all components, which should mitigate any delay should either of them not be able to fulfil our orders in time. We have also made sure to use commonly available components, so that they can easily be sourced from a variety of suppliers.
In terms of shipping, the boards will be assembled less than a few weeks after the end of the Kickstarter project, so everyone will have their rewards shipped out before the end of June 2015!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
