More about Piglet:
Piglet began as an outgrowth of Asher and Matt's pre-existing Chicago
grindcore outfit called Seyarse. Ezra moved from Kansas City to
Chicago in 2001 and met Asher at high school. The first piglet jams
began during the fall of 2002 and the first live performances soon after
around the north Chicago suburbs. Seyarse's live performances gradually
faded out as Piglet gained momentum. Piglet's only official releases
were a six-track EP titled LAVA LAND (2005, Team AV), and a 7" vinyl
featuring the single "Little Bubble, Where You Going?" from Lava Land
and an electronic remix by Brandon Knocke. Nonetheless, there were two
additional EPs that haunt Piglet's discography, unknown to the public.
The first was recorded with Dan Augusto in 2003, featuring a series of hebephrenic audio escapades through the adolescent musical mind. The youngest member of the band was 16 at the time of this recording. Unfortunately, these recordings with Augusto never survived and all that remains are some home demos, which we're making available for digital download as a part of this kickstarter.
The second series of songs was recorded in multi-track by Eric Butkus, audio engineer of Lava Land, live at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago sometime in 2006. These songs were the proverbial straw that broke the camels back. Unflinchingly complex and manic, Piglet evolved toward something resembling Franz Liszt cruising over percussive backbone of Zach Hill or Greg Saunier. Like most experimental music, Piglet remained exciting to some, thought provoking to others, and flat out confusing to the rest.
These five mult-track files remained locked in some dark corner of the universe for six years. Through a curious turn of events, they re-emerged and found their way to audio engineer Daniel Good (Chicago). We had them mastered and touched up during early 2013 just in time for this kickstarter project. Also included is a home recording of a guitar composition that went unused by the band due to their breakup. This is the PIGLET - SONGS EP.
Where are members of piglet today? Two are in Chicago, one is in Portland. If you currently live in Portland and would like to discuss collaborating, feel free to be in touch via email.
Where can we follow future updates from Piglet? You can visit our facebook group page to discuss the band, post any further questions, and purchase merch. You can occasionally reach the band members through this space.
We've received a lot of verbal support over the past few years from fans; it's been the fuel for our confidence to carry forward with this kickstarter. Take it one step further and fund our pressing of Lava Land on Vinyl!
Risks and challenges
We've set up the kickstarter so that, provided we reach our fundraising goal, we will have enough money to press the record and EP, along with providing gifts. The challenge we face is in distributing the music after the fact. We'll be counting on word of mouth and online promotion to spread awareness about the record.
There is no known risk associated with pressing and distributing this vinyl, as we've carefully considered the associated costs and have already chosen the company that we'll be working with. Likewise, we are pressing the CDs at home, so unless our CD burner breaks down in the process (and we have no reason to believe that it would) then it should be smooth sailing. If for whatever reason this were to happen, we have friends who can help us to complete the project.
Our SONGS EP will be packaged with sleeves that we already own and is accompanied by a home-made zine that our friend and art collaborater Josh Rubins will be designing and printing for us. If anything were to happen here, we will print our own cd inserts and have the equipment to do that as well.
Again, we don't anticipate any problems here as we have carefully gauged the amount of money required to complete our task. The biggest concern is getting the word out that this kickstarter is happening, and getting further awareness generated about our Vinyl once it has been pressed and released.
Thank you again for reading about this project and we hope that you choose to support us in actualizing the dream!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
