A year after releasing my first book, three uncanny teenagers have given me a new story to tell.
So here it goes…
There are two things I know about FAMILY:
1. Family is important.
2. You can’t choose which one you’re born into.
There are two things I know about GROWING UP:
1. It’s hard.
2. It never stops.
This is how my story began, simply reflecting upon my own life and the things I believed in. In addition to running out of interesting and youthful stories to read, I was ready to take a break from screenwriting and immerse myself into a more non-limiting style of writing.
I had had the concept of my first novel in the back of my head for a couple of years. It was always going to start with 2 or 3 teenage boys in a small town that existed only for them. I named that town Ele, CA. There was always going to be a secret or two that was kept from them, a connection between them that was unsettling. And they were always going to be hunted by someone or something. When all the answers began to formulate and rush into my head at all times of the day, I knew that I had to give TWISTIR a green light. About halfway through the first draft, I also knew that the other two main characters, who weren’t narrating, needed their own books.
Hence, the TWISTIR series was born.Even though there are supernatural elements to the story, Twistir is about family, love, loss, and trying to grow up "normal" when you're everything, but!
Some of you may already know, but apparently the publishing business isn’t doing so well. Even traditionally signed authors have been self-publishing lately. I’d been hearing this for a while, but for me, everything was made clear with the official closing of all BORDER’s stores. An avid bookstore shopper, this really hit home. All that said, it’s even tougher theses days to score a good publishing deal and receive the kind of resources said deal would traditionally offer.
WHY I NEED YOUR HELP:
However, I've never been one to lie down and take cover in the face of adversity. And I don't plan to start. I am going to make this book available to world, and worthy of its audience (YOU), if it kills me.
SO WITH YOUR HELP, we can make this happen TOGETHER!(The actual cost is well above 5k, but that is the bare minimum of what I need to successfully publish this book. Any “rollover” donations will be used for items 2-4.)The funds raised from this Kickstarter Campaign will be used for:
1. PUBLISHING a. Manuscript Editing
b. Copy Editing
c. Cover Design (Front and Back)
d. Proof Copies and Shipping
2. MARKETING a. Flyers
c. Mailings/Post Cards
d. Book Website/Ads/Book Trailer
3. DISTRIBUTION a. Ordering Book Copies
4. BOOK TOURING a. Travel
c. Lots of Coffee!***
THE WAY KICKSTARTER WORKS:
So because Kickstarter has an “ALL OR NOTHING” method of fundraising, which means that no money will change hands if the goal isn't reached, I need your help in spreading the word (and the LINK) to anyone and everyone you know who might one day be a fan of my work, or who may just be inspired to help out. I’m pretty accessible (via my Website and Facebook and Twitter) and I would love to hear any ideas people may have about promoting literacy, especially with youth in at-risk neighborhoods. So if you’re a teacher or community center advisor, or just a concerned parent with a great idea, please contact me to set something up.
Just in case we take this thing to the MOON, I wanted to agree to some “ROLLOVER REWARDS.”
1. For every $500 over the 5K goal, I will adopt another class in the Greater LA area. Backer suggestions will be taken into consideration, but priority will be given to at-risk student populations (ie. Inner City or Special Needs)
2. For every $1000 over the 5K goal, I will have LUNCH with another Kickstarter BACKER (One of YOU). Names will be pulled by a special guest via online video.
3. YIKES, GUYS!! If the campaign goes more than $5000 over the 5K goal, I will devote the entire month of August (2012) to reading at Elderly Homes, Community Centers, and Libraries across Southern California (LA and San Diego), and possibly Northern California (Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco). Booklist will be made appropriate for audience. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL. If the majority of Backers want to see it, I will also commit to cutting the word “TWISTIR” into my hair and wear it to the TWISTIR LAUNCH PARTY in LA. (You’re all invited, by the way… but keep it quiet.)
THANK YOU ALL SOOOOO MUCH for your support in spreading the word about this amazing new journey! There will be a thank you page on the website for all donors to be listed (if you like) and feel free to let me know if there’s something you would like to see from my publishing process. I will do my best to keep you all updated with posts, pics, and video.LASTLY, I’ll leave you with this excerpt from the Twistir book.
I was up in the air.
I was definitely flying. Not with the confidence and steadiness of, let’s say, Superman, but more like a wavering plastic bag caught in a small whirlwind. I didn’t know what was going on, or how, but I was definitely airborne. I floated around my room, unable to actually guide my direction, and unable to stop. I could feel myself starting to sweat from being nervous.
I struggled to compose myself. Was I still asleep? As the questions began to form in my mind I felt a sudden gust of wind blow in from the window. At the time that’s what I was thinking… it was coming from the window, but as my eyes searched the room for an explanation I found every single window to be closed.
This gust sent me twisting and turning in mid air. I tried to call for help, but I could barely catch my breath. What would my father think, anyway, if he saw his fifteen year old son flying uncontrollably across his bedroom? In the midst of my already violent movement, I began to quickly rise and drop in distance from the ground. Then, I went crashing toward my bedroom wall. I panicked, finally getting out a healthy shout for help. I threw my arms around and tried desperately to stop before impact. And at the very last second, it worked. I let out a sigh of relief. I was safe. At least, for the moment. As I sat idle in the air, my relief came to a sudden end when I jolted to the ground. Instead of hitting the wall, I fell about eight feet. And my head landed on a twenty pound dumbbell.
That’s the last thing I remembered. When I...
“Twistir is the best [sci-fi/fantasy] novel I've read since my beloved Harry Potter. It kept me engaged from cover to cover. Let these young boys take you on an adventure with them. You won’t regret it.”-Joy Sargent, KIPP School (Empower Academy)
Absolutely! The TWISTIR eBook will be available on the Kindle and all other eReader formats. (Nook, Kobo, etc.)
