About

What is this?

For anyone who's clicked through but is unsure how this all works we're trying to raise £5,000 quickly so we can finish the refit on an old building in Middlesbrough and open it as a Pie and Ale diner for those looking for a cool place to grab some lunch. We've ploughed £20,000 of our own money into the build, this Kickstarter is to help us complete the work within the next few weeks.

There's some details here about us, about our business, and about the building we're fitting out. If you like what you read and you want to help us to get the place open in a few weeks time you make a pledge. You choose how much, and you choose what you'd like to receive in return. (See Rewards) We're offering pie meals, vouchers, T Shirts, membership to our exclusive Upper Crust Club. The choice is yours.

No money is taken from your account now. We have until June 29th to try and raise £5,000 worth of pledges. If we achieve that figure, that's when the money will leave your account. If we don't achieve our goal, then you pay nothing, we get nothing, there will be no rewards and we have to find a different way to raise the money.

Hope that's explained things. Anyway here's the bit about us...

We’re Pie Jackers - aka Julie and Neil Fletcher, a husband and wife team, who fled their 9 to 5 jobs to follow a food dream. Pie Jackers is the result and our ethos is simple. We buy the best ingredients from local suppliers and we make top notch pies.  For the last three years our home kitchen has been Pie Jackers HQ and from there we've made more than 50,000 pies which we've sold at farmers' markets across the North East.

We’ve racked up seven British Pie Awards and we were selected by TV dragon Theo Paphitis to be #SBS winners (that’s his Twitter competition which resulted in us joining an exclusive network of awesome small businesses across the country).

We are opening a bakery and licensed diner in the most incredible old stone-fronted building in the heart of our hometown of Middlesbrough. It's in the historic quarter, an area that's long been neglected but is currently undergoing a renaissance. We fell in love with it the first time we walked through the door, so now we are in the process of turning these former court chambers into a haven for pie lovers. Somewhere they can sit and indulge their passion for butter rich flaky pastry, deep filled with a wide range of gourmet fillings like our signature pie, the Steak Guinness and Black Pudding. And this is the place...

We're planning to offer diners the very best pies, served with a range of seasonal side dishes, washed down by the finest locally brewed craft ales, and finished with a luxury dessert (made by a local producer we met on the farmers' markets).

We're also creating a kitchen three times the size of the one we've been using at home, so plenty of space to create jobs so we can offer work to local people to help us make lots more of our handmade gourmet pies.

But as you can see the building needed a mammoth amount of work.

We've raised almost all of the money we need for the refit (it's been a struggle but we've got there) and work is underway. Our £20,000 budget has been very quickly swallowed up with the dull but very necessary basics, including kitchen equipment, internal building work, a full electrical system and brand new plumbing throughout.

Your mission should you choose to accept it, is to help us raise enough money to complete the dining area and install some of the fun-stuff, the signage and artwork that will make it Pie Jackers. It's what makes our brand stand out from the rest. It's the part of Pie Jackers that makes people smile and is remembered long after the last bite of pie has been devoured. By signing up for one of our rewards you'd be joining a growing band of people who love a good #piejacking. These are some of our SmugShots from the last three years.

Once complete the Bakery and Diner will offer a pie hideaway, a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle, a place where pie-lovers can meet like-minded people, safe in the knowledge that they are among pie friends. It will also give us a much larger kitchen which means we can increase our production to meet growing demand. At the minute we regularly sell out at events because we simply can't make any more. We are also having to turn down new wholesale inquiries because we have reached capacity in the space we have at home.

Pie Jackers already supplies pies to five fab family businesses in the Tees Valley including a restaurant, a coffee shop, a hotel and two bars. The local businesses we work with are very important to us which is why we want to spread the pie love and work with a few more across the wider North East!

We also use local. The refit is being carried out by a builder from Middlesbrough, a plumber from Thornaby, an electrician from Thornaby, a kitchen supply company from Stockton.

On our menu will feature food and drink from other local producers. For example we will only be serving ales from local craft breweries, we'll be offering desserts made by a local business and our meat and poultry and roasted coffee is supplied by local companies.

We believe in working together to keep more money in this area so businesses survive and people have jobs.

This little poem we wrote sums us up really...

What others say about us:

"This is almost definitely the best pie I have ever eaten. The Hotshot Chicken from Pie Jackers has so many things I love in a pie." Katie Peal, British Pie Awards judge

"Amazing pies, best I have ever tasted"

"Best pies ever!! Steak Guinness and Black Pudding pie is just amazing. Well done, can't wait for my next one."

"Wow! Just had the cheese pie. Yummy yummy I'm a fussy veggie and that was the best pie I've ever had. Outstanding! Will be coming back for more. Pastry lush."

"Went to Stokesley market today and bought a couple of pies. Oh my lord how delicious they were. Why have I not tried these before? Will be stalking you at markets from now on."

The Pie Pod

It's been a whirlwind three years and we've thrown everything we've got at this little business of ours including customising a street-food trailer that we’ve nicknamed the Pie Pod. We take private bookings for festival style family parties - we roll up, feed guests with scrumptious pie meals and then we hit the road. There's nothing quite like getting piejacked with loved ones.

The wedding

Guess what...in the midst of all this pie madness we found time to tie the knot! Yes folks, when we took this leap into the unknown three years ago we had no idea where it would take us. So as well as taking us to food events right across the North East, it also took us down the aisle. The honeymoon had to be put on hold though as Pie Jackers had an event two days later.

We are building a real family business that cares about its customers - so much so we know many of them by name. Like this little fella who's probably the biggest littlest fan of our Steak Guinness and Black Pudding pies - or black ball pies as he calls them.

Can you help us put the finishing touches to this great old building where we can welcome our customers, young and old, so they can sit down and indulge their love of pies?

If you are able to, then we are hugely grateful. If you're not able to help out at this time then we thank you anyway for making it to the end of our story and we'd love to welcome you to the Bakery and Diner if you're ever passing.

Sharing the pie love

Risks and challenges

As an established business that's been trading successfully for three years we can guarantee this project is going ahead. We've already invested in it, signed the lease for the building, and carried out a lot of the work. Any support we receive through Kickstarter will allow us to complete the whole project within the timescale we've set ourselves (end of June/beginning of July).
If we are unsuccessful in raising the £5,000 we will still be able to complete the kitchen/bakery, but completion of the dining area will be delayed.
