PIE FIDELITY is a documentary following a group of friends and one pie maker across the USA. Watch as this team travels through the south, gathering pie wisdom and belt loops on their way to the National Pie Championship. Pie Fidelity wants to share a slice with the most passionate of characters - the Agent Dale Cooper of the Southern Pie Route (we made that up, the Southern Pie Route, but it's going to become a thing.. you watch and see).
Nicole Mournian won 4 out of 7 awards in the 2012 KCRW Good Food Pie Contest - igniting a desire to be the best pie maker in the world. She has entered the National Pie Championships (April 2013) and Pie Fidelity is the journey to the contest. This trip takes them across the Southern US where they will try as many pies as they can as they try to identify what it is about filling in a crust that has created the legend of the quintessential 'American Pie'.
There was a time in America (before the Carb Crash) when every state, heck everyone's own grandmother knew how to make THE BEST PIE. Whether this was culinary mythology or just good, old fashioned pie pride - every region of the South became known for a certain variety of pie. Pie Fidelity is the search for these pies - these prideful bakers and eaters who think they know the best or make the best. We want to meet them, hear their stories and gather inspiration from them. We want to meet people with STRONG feelings about pie.
Why the South? Very few times in your life do you have the chance to experience dishes that create a lasting food memory. For Nicole, a road trip (this very same route, with a band and very little pie) across the South delivered many inspiring food memories. It was on this trip that she saw her career building in front of her - an EPIC piece of pie in Atlanta (Apple, no cheese, served warm with ice cream and eaten sitting in a diner alone. The band was sound checking at a near by bar). It seemed like even privately owned gas stations had slices of pie, cake, homemade jerky and biscuits on the counter. She would become a baker.
This time around, this trip through the South is a journey towards mastery. Nicole practices the art of pie making nearly every day at this point, and her pies have become local favorites. In some ways, she is bringing that same kind of small town vibe to Venice, Ca - causing the bustling, young crowds to slow down for the time it takes to enjoy a beautifully crafted slice of the daily offering.
The Contest: the National Pie Championships welcomes bakers of all levels the chance to compete for the title of Best in art of making pie. It takes place during the Great American Pie Festival, which has been making a weekend out of pie for 12 years.
The Documentary will be edited and sent to festivals in the hopes of winning non-food based awards. We hope to create a touching and inclusive all-American story about one of our Nation's most bragged about foods. Pie history, cultural history and documentation of a people fascinated by filling in pastry crust.
THE PIE FIDELITY TEAM (and what they need)
Nicole Rucker: Pie baker, competitive baking warrior (its a bloodsport) and pie history nerd. In charge of the route, the winning and the pies.
Casey O'Brien: Film Maker and character lover - Nicole and Casey met while working side by side for Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea. Now they work together for Gjelina Take Away and as a creative team they are responsible for this gem.
Alessandra Molina: Animal lover, movie lover, cheerleader, and pie eater. Alessandra will be serving as producer, camera assistant, pie wrangler, and anything else we need help on.
Alan Gastelum: Awesome photographer - Casey and Nicole want to bring Alan along to document the trip in photos. His work is classic and artistic and he's the right man for the job.
Our budget is modest, and in large part will go to funding the daily production costs of the trip. We will need a lot of butter. Some money will be allocated to equipment rental - but we have most everything we need in that department.
AFTER THE DRIVE (and hopefully the win!)
We will have a rad pie party/viewing party at our home base (Los Angeles) and then begin sending our little pie baby out to festivals. We want as many pie fanatics as possible to enjoy our trip!
Risks and challenges
Nicole uses a very specific crust recipe that requires we bring a lot of product along with us to ensure that we have exactly what she needs and that it remains in good shape.
We think the long drive and the extensive amounts of cold butter we will need will be the sensitive issues to keep in mind, but we have connections in each city that we plan on stopping in that can help us overcome any potential obstacles. If all the butter melts in some kind of freak accident, we have butter hook ups all across the south.
Nicole and Casey work in a very busy restaurant everyday and are used to solving problems on the fly - in case there is anything that cannot be solved along the way we will have the full support of our home team in Los Angeles. They have vowed to overnight butter, sugar, flour and anything else we might need.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
