Join us on an adventure as a young woman journeys through the art that inspired Mussorgsky's classic “Pictures at an Exhibition”!

THE EXPERIENCE

You walk into the theatre, aisle lights glow from the floor as you find your seat. When the lights go out, the projector casts a flickering glow across the room. From it, you watch a story.

This is the “film experience.”

You see through the eyes of a child. She is watching, but you are experiencing. She sees beautiful art, she hears timeless music. It’s hers, but it’s not just hers; it’s yours.

This is our film Pictures at an Exhibition: a unique experience.

THE LEGACY

Modest Mussorgsky composed "Pictures at an Exhibition", a suite in ten movements, in 1874. After attending a gallery exhibition of Russian artist Victor Hartmann’s work, Mussorgsky created one of the first scores for visual art.

Mussorgsky wanted his listener to understand Hartmann’s work through his music. While the medium of art changed, the meaning of the work did not-- Hartmann lives on through Mussorgsky. As Mussorgsky’s music lives on through every listener, the original works of art live on with every note.

THE FILM

The most important thought behind this film project is that we consider Mussorgsky to be one of the first composers to write a musical score for a visual art medium. Any filmmaker would agree that a musical score makes a major contribution to the tone of a story. So, we want to finish the “film” Mussorgsky had in mind when he wrote “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

Through the imagination of a child, we will take an audience through the ten movements, with the original paintings that accompanied them. Seven directors and three animators from around the world approach the score as one of the first "soundtracks" accompanying Hartmann’s work. Moreover, by blending live action, animation and linear storytelling, we hope to go beyond Mussorgsky’s wildest dreams by bringing our own inspiration and imaginations to the big screen.

THE PROJECT

This is more than just a festival film. With your support, it will bring audiences to classical music in a way that they have not experienced in more than a generation. We have the ability as filmmakers to bring a wonderful perspective to classical music and art. Not only to entertain an audience, but to give them an adventure. It will be an educational tool, a work of visual art, and a new telling Hartmann’s story.

We will use this film to educate in many ways. From encouraging the artistic and musical minds of children, to music appreciation classes at the high school and collegiate levels, and multi-media integration classes designed to inspire innovative filmmaking. This project will expand Mussorgsky’s existing audience while maintaining the intent of the original experiment.

THE SUPPORT

For this film to stand the test of time, like all classical music and art, it needs your support. We don’t want to just tell the story by Victor Hartmann and Modest Mussorgsky; we want to add our craft to the story. We want the legacy to live on through every note, every frame, the best way our talents as filmmakers allow.

Your support for this film will enrich generations of students, filmgoers, musicians, and artists.

If you have read this far into our project, you already recognize, appreciate, and enjoy classical music and art. You have watched as it is slowly being phased out of mainstream education and culture. Art, in any form that moves people, should never be phased out and your efforts to help us will serve to keep it alive and well.

THE END

You walk into the theatre, aisle lights glow from the floor as you find your seat. When the lights go out, the projector casts a flickering glow across the room. From it, you watch a story.

You see beautiful art, you hear timeless music-- you experience something with the same excitement and wonder you possessed as a child. The main character is watching, but you are experiencing. The film is not hers. It’s yours.

This is our film...........Pictures at an Exhibition.

Thank you for your support!

Risks and challenges

This film, over the course of 7 days, has a total of 11 different locations throughout the city of Austin. The immediate challenges are securing permits for a handful of the locations but also in the development of 'plan B' options in the event that weather or a lost location happens last minute. Pick up days will be arranged to ensure that production value is not sacrificed in the event of such an obstacle.

Another factor will be the August Texas heat. We have measures in place to prevent that from being a problem as we will having cooling stations and a qualified medic on site.

The multiple performers throughout the production week have their own unique set of risks and challenges as we have silk dancing aerialists, fire breathers, sword swallowers and fire spinners. They are all professionals in their respective fields, but we will have proper inspections and other elements on hand to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
