We’ve all got ideas of things we'd love to make: from amazing light and music shows to rugged rovers and robots, to hidden wildlife cameras and automated gardens.
pi-top lets you do all these and more, using code, physical components and kits to design and make incredible inventions. At the heart of this making eco-system is pi-top , the go-anywhere do-anything computer powered by the Raspberry Pi 4.
With pi-top, you can learn to design, code and make anything!
pi-top  is the new programmable computing module for makers, creators and innovators.
It has a fully programmable mini screen and buttons, 5-hour internal battery, CPU cooling system and accompanying project kits and components. Powering all of this is the revolutionary Raspberry Pi 4 computer with 4GB of RAM, and a new social making platform called Further.
Turn screen time into creativity time, and develop your coding skills and imagination to design exciting projects to solve real-world challenges.
Every pi-top  comes with a metal component case with 14 electronic components such as programmable sensors, buttons and LEDs to bring your inventions to life, and store them safely when not in use. We like to think of it as an electronics bento box!
You connect these to your pi-top  using the pi-top Makers Architecture, included with every pi-top . Check out our unboxing video below to see it in action.
Each of the components is magnetic, and if plastic's your preferred construction medium, there's a bunch of LEGO connectors too.
Also in the box is a power supply, a hex key so you can access the internals, connecting wires, male-to-male GPIO connectors, and a quick set up booklet. All you need to bring is your imagination!
This powerful easy-to-use combination of components allows you to start your journey of designing, coding and making.
pi-top  has an awesome built-in mini screen. Program it to display information like data from sensors, to system information like battery life and CPU usage.
Or you could use it to code and play retro video games! 🕹
But the really great thing about the mini screen is that because pi-top  can be programmed via another computer, phone or tablet to run projects without a screen attached, the mini screen lets you know your code is deployed and working.
The four buttons either side are fully programmable with a wide range of commands and actions that you can control.
Of course for the best pi-top experience our new HD 11.6" 1080p touchscreen with a detachable Bluetooth keyboard (US layout) is a winner!
Clip your pi-top  on the back of the fold-out kickstand and use as a desktop, or fold it flush and hold like a tablet. The kickstand also has an HDMI port, allowing you to bring the pi-top  back round to the front and continue making (HDMI cable included).
The pi-top screen and keyboard bundle are designed not only to connect to the pi-top , but also our wider pi-top Makers Architecture. So need a magic mirror that talks back to you? Abracadabra! Want to mount a screen on wheels to be a telepresence? Go right ahead. Need a graphical interface for an Advanced Vehicle project? No problem. Simply clip your pi-top  screen to anything you make and open a world of interaction possibilities.
The pi-top [AVK] – Advanced Vehicle Kit – comes with everything you need to design and make fully programmable vehicles.
Need a low-profile rover with a camera to fit in a tiny space? No problem. Want to make a farm bot to sow seeds or look for weeds? Done.
But that’s not all, with pi-top [AVK] you can design and make literally hundreds of vehicles, devices and other creations.
You could use the camera and motors to create an automated wildlife feeder. Or make a crane with a motorised pulley system to winch up cargo. Or why not make a robotic pet that follows the sound of your voice?
pi-top [AVK] contains over 100 components; from tracks and wheels to motors, servos and sensors. There are also 20 metal building plates to help you create whatever you need in order to explore your world. Just add imagination.

The pi-top [AVK] is fully compatible with other pi-top components, so you can integrate the light, sound, and distance sensors that come with every pi-top  to make your inventions even more powerful and intelligent. Every pi-top  comes with our latest operating system, pi-topOS SIRIUS. Built on the rock-solid foundations of Raspbian (Buster), it’s packed with features and sports a clean, crisp look and feel.
As well as access to Further and Search Portal, pi-topOS SIRIUS offers vast performance improvements on CPU usage. There’s plug and play connectivity with other machines via VNC, display hot-swapping, and user-programmable hardware libraries. Future upgrades or resets are now much easier too, without having to use a PC to flash the SD card.
Want to run your own OS? pi-top  can run any OS that the Raspberry Pi 4 can run such as NOOBS, Ubuntu MATE and Windows 10 IoT Core. However, pi-topOS SIRIUS is the one that we officially support.

Built from 3D printed parts, the pi-top Mars rover has six independently-driven wheels and a robotic arm with six degrees-of-freedom. On top sits a pi-top  with a camera and various environmental sensors to monitor air temperature, pressure and humidity. Another pi-top  remotely operates it.
Poppy, the pi-top robot, is optimised for research purposes and its modularity allows for a wide range of applications and experimentations. It helps users explore balance, movement and biomechanics.
The pi-top drone has GPS, accelerometer, magnetometer and barometer to give it 10 degrees of freedom. Get ready for aerial adventures!
pi-top  interfaces with a variety of 3rd party audio/visual hardware to create stunning music and sounds.
The electronic components, LEDs, buttons and sensors connect to pi-top  via plates that clip underneath it. These plates make rapid designing and prototyping possible, meaning you can go from idea to working invention fast!
There are two types of plates available. The Foundation Plate comes with every pi-top , and is great for getting started, letting you connect LEDs, sensors and potentiometers to make circuits, games and electronic systems. It has the following ports:-
- 8 digital ports (including 1 PWM & 1 UART port)
- 4 analogue ports
- 4 I2C ports
If you want to control bigger, more powerful things like vehicles and robots, and attach things like cameras and motors, then you need the Expansion Plate (included with the pi-top [AVK] reward).
Here's the Expansion Plate tech specs:-

- 4 Servo motor ports
- 40-pin Raspberry Pi GPIO header
- DC power in (12v)
- 8 Digital ports (including 1 PWM & 1 UART port)

pi-top  can be used in lots of set up configurations, allowing you to choose the one that’s right for what you need to do.
First of all, pi-top  works straight out of the box using your existing TV, screen, keyboard and mouse.
You can also control it via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth using your phone or tablet, and if that wasn't enough you can also access it via VNC using another computer such as Chromebook, PC or Mac.

pi-top  has been designed so that anyone no matter what their age can design, code and make. The keyboard uses FS Me font, which was specifically designed to be read by anyone with learning difficulties. Furthermore, the colours on pi-top 's buttons have been chosen to be viewable to those with colour sensitivity.
Powering pi-top  is the brand new Raspberry Pi 4, offering a huge increase in power and speed meaning you can make and do so much more.

Ok, time to talk tech specs. pi-top  comes with gigabit ethernet meaning faster network storage and access to servers, dual micro HDMI for two 4k screen displays, 4GB of superfast LPDDR4 SDRAM meaning more applications running, two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port for connecting devices and peripherals.
All this extra power generates heat, and at 85ºC Raspberry Pi 4 begins to perform processor throttling so it doesn’t overheat. At pi-top, we don’t want to hold you back, so we built an active cooling system into the pi-top  to ensure you get maximum performance even under the heaviest of processor loads.
And of course with Raspberry Pi's GPIO pins, you've access to thousands of Raspberry Pi projects you can mod, hack and develop. We like to think that's a whole lot of power in one tiny package.

Founded in 2014, pi-top is a creative design company based on the simple idea that a ‘maker-mindset’ is essential to develop the skills we all need to be future ready.
pi-top started with an idea in a living room in London. In 2014 pi-top’s two founders set out to design and make the world’s first 3D printed laptop. But with no space to create the laptop, they first they had to make a workbench to build it on. Learning, designing and making is in the company’s DNA.
It’s how the company went from a single prototype laptop to the 70+ strong creative design company, comprised of a global team of industrial designers, engineers and learning theorists, who have designed, manufactured and shipped more than 250,000 devices.
The pi-top hardware platform is an award-winning ecosystem used in thousands of homes, maker spaces and schools worldwide, blending physical computing and project-based learning with Computer Science and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) education. We've come a long way since that first 3D printed laptop, but we've never stopped learning, listening and making. And, yes, we still have that first workbench.
