Lord of Laudanum is an old school type of MMORPG for Linux and Windows PCs with graphics inspired by Minecraft, Trove & Cube World. We’re throwing character levels out the window and focus on skill based progression, giving you the freedom to build your character the way you want.
In the main story line you will relive the history of Opium, where it all started and how it eventually evolved into Laudanum. The game will explore the limits of decency with a wink of dark humor.
Walk the Sumerian sands in a loathed desert, craft your weapons, grow your dope and battle to become an ancient drug-lord. Rewrite the history of opium and fight the old gods. Travel to alternate states to build your dream empire or visit the brothels of almost forgotten cities.
Nothing is ever what it seems to be. You will feast on your addiction while raising your skills, battle with gods to build your empire and march the hot sands of the Sumerian desert and beyond. Explore the world and your mind and remember,

Skill-based character progression: In this game progress is molded by your skills. Your path in Lord of Laudanum will be paved by crafting, combat and socializing, each of them offering a variety of aspects to use for your character evolution. In the end all of them can be mastered. The choice is yours.
Crafting: So many things in this world can be crafted. You cannot face your ferocious enemies and loot their gear without preparing yourselves… Craft and gain power. Deploy Gathering, Woodcutting and Mining. Explore Manufacturing, Metalworking, Leatherworking, Cooking and Fishing. Or pump your basic stats with Engraving and Enhancing. It’s all there waiting to be mastered.
Social skills: friendly, insulting, sexual: Social skills matter. Excel in them and you can control your reputation with factions, gain access to special quests and items or have a good laugh while testing the limits. Don’t forget to practice sex for it will make you a better person. Social engineering should not be taken lightly in Lord of Laudanum.
Factions: The old world of Sumeria is divided in factions. Some are friendly some neutral and some are bad-ass and will shoot you on sight. Insult the ones that you dislike to gain ranks for the ones you do. Gain reputation, enjoy perks and fight your opponents in honor of your faction.
Mounts: Desert sand is hot! Why wear down your shoes when you can travel on a mount? Like all comfort, don’t take this ride lightly because you will have to earn him. Increased run speed is one thing, other perks will soon travel with you. Camels for instance make great and reliable companions, just don’t forget to feed them.
Drugs, lots of drugs: In this game you will play a part in the history of Opium. Where it started and how it evolved. As Opium alone can be a bit boring, we have added an interesting variety of consumable substances for your tripping adventures. See for yourself but don’t overdo. There are some side effects to all good things in life. You need to balance the scales.
Filth, a dirty burden: It’s a dirty world in many ways and you will get filthy. Note that certain people will not talk or trade with you when unwashed. You disgust them. Remember this and wash up in time because nobody likes dirt in their bed.
Pets: You don’t have to be alone. We've got you covered. At first your companion may seem cute and funny but as you progress they will evolve in fierce warriors ready to defend your back. Get them armored and in shape and you will have a worthy brother in arms.
Player housing, a private garden: The harsh life in the desert makes the people of Sumeria suspicious and not keen on trading with strangers. Take some drugs, trip and build an empire in your dreams. Whatever you harvest or craft here is usable in the main world. It’s your private parallel universe.
Endgame addiction levels: A part of the progress is passing the point when you have used too much and too often the substances in game. That point is called addiction. No way back, we've got you now. Your next hit is the only way forward and from now on addiction levels are your concern. You'll start with Addiction level 1 and ultimately you get hooked up to level 5. Wicked things are happening each level and more content will open as you move to your next hit.
Auction house: Need coin? No time to grind? You can trade your loot directly with other players or put it on sale at the Auction house. All Auction houses are interconnected, buy something from a distant house and pigeons will deliver your goods to your region.
We have been brainstorming and prototyping a single player version since mid 2015 and switched over to an online persistent world in late 2017.
Functionality-wise we are 80% completed of which about 30% is playable in the game's latest prototype right now. For the last 20% of custom features we will need to hire an extra developer for a short period of time but the foundations for these are already in place.
Art-wise we are 10% complete. This is where the big job is still to be done and if this project gets more funding we will be able to hire additional artists to speed up things on this front. Music comes from John Leonard French and audio effects will be made by ourselves.
Patrick Romgens – Coder – Graphics - Project Manager:
Patrick has roots in the old MSX standard, having released games for that platform. He has a passion for technology, having worked on several AAA titles as a lead tester in quality insurance for companies like Enzyme Testing Labs and Electronic Arts. Now is the time to continue the creator's adventure with Phuntec Studio.
Edwin Heinen – Story Writer – Graphics - Idea Tank:
Edwin started writing poetry and short fiction prose in 1991. After leaving home to study in Amsterdam he soon got involved in the underground artistic environment and never finished his studies. His first publication was in 1993 in a Amsterdam newspaper. Breeding kids is bad for writing, so production was a low priority early 21th century. He refused to publish his poetry and took up his writing around 2015. The Belgian government acknowledged his status as an artist in 2017 and ever since he’s working on several projects.
As game engine we're using Unity2018.4.4 on Linux with a small army of 3rd party assets, to name a few: Atavism Online, VoxelPlay, Beautify and many more. Our 3D voxel arts are made in Goxel and MagicaVoxel, for anything 2D we use GIMP and Inkscape and our Sound Effects are made in Reason 10.
This game is made on Linux, for Linux and Windows.

€50.000 - Besides in our own webshop, Lord of Laudanum will also be released on Steam and Itch.io.
€75.000 - Lord of Laudanum is currently only in English. In case we reach this amazing amount the game will also be playable in French, Italian, German & Spanish.
Risks and challenges
We are a small team, making an MMORPG. This is only possible thanks to frameworks like Atavism Online that take away the server side of worries for indie developers. We can focus on making content to hook into the framework and keeping it on the latest available version. Any bugs we, and you in case you join us on this journey, find in the basis framework are reported to the Atavism team and will be resolved in future updates.
The amount of funding we ask for is kept low as we are already quite far in development and only ask you for support for the last stretch of content! We have our Atavism licenses well covered regarding updates and concurrent players and our servers are scalable with a few clicks, bring it on!
