This photography project will explore the aesthetics of environmental and social sustainability initiatives in Malmö, Sweden.

The Project

For this project, I plan to spend four months in Malmö, Sweden, where I will use photography to explore the aesthetics of a sustainable urban landscape. I will make photographs and conduct research at Malmö University, and the four months will culminate with a lecture about and exhibition of this work.

I plan to photograph green energy technologies, such as wind and solar power, exploring the ways they are visually integrated in the urban environment. Here in the U.S., renewable energy is often kept outside of the energy-consuming cities – making energy production (and consumption) less visible in our landscape and in our consciousness. In Malmö, I will photograph green architecture and design, and people within the community, while conducting independent research on environmental and social sustainability.

This project builds upon my previous work, which explores human marks in the environment, across various landscapes and cultures.

My pictures consider the complex, (sometimes beautiful) traces in the landscape left over from human activities. The work I make in Malmö will extend this exploration to a different sort of human presence in the landscape – one that is both more deliberate and more sustainable.

A formerly industrial city, Malmö has remade itself as an international center of sustainability practices. I am excited to be in a place I have never been, and let my experiences of the place shape the project. The human presence in the urban spaces of Malmö (and in the photographs) is a crucial aspect of the project and an important extension and development of my previous work.

My hope with this project is to emphasize the role of art and artists in helping the public understand, accept, and appreciate sustainability initiatives. In addition to exhibiting this work in Sweden and then in the U.S., I have the  longer-term goal of producing a catalog of this body of work.
I hope you’ll follow my project via my photo blog in Sweden, which will be announced soon. Thank you for your interest, and for believing in this project, and of course, big thanks for your support!.

About Malmö

Malmö University has played a central role in transforming Malmö from an industrial town into a flourishing center of international sustainability practices. I have been invited to conduct this project in affiliation with Malmö University’s College of Culture and Society. Malmö is the ideal city for this project because of its abundance of renewable energy technologies and its commitment to making these technologies socially sustainable across diverse communities. Malmö has the largest area of photovoltaic and solar thermal installations in Sweden and the largest solar-cell installation in Scandinavia. In addition to wind turbines within the city, Lillgrund Wind Farm, one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, is just off Malmö’s coast.

Your Support & the Rewards

To begin this project, I have received a start-up grant from the Swedish Institute in the amount of $2500. This money will enable me to travel to Sweden and get things underway. The funds I raise with this Kickstarter will supplement that grant to make the four-month project possible. Your donations will be used toward studio expenses, materials & equipment, printing, and other overhead costs. If I surpass my Kickstarter goal, additional funds will be used toward the production of a calalog of the work from this project. No donation is too small. All support is greatly appreciated!

Rewards

All of the photographs offered as rewards will be signed, archival, exhibition quality prints. In addition to a piece from Sweden, it is also possible to receive a framed 32” x 40” photograph of your choice from my graduate thesis exhibition, Through Place, 2011 (featured in the video). There are fourteen pieces from which to choose, and earlier backers will have priority of choice.

Shipping for all rewards to U.S. destinations is included. (For shipping outside the U.S. there may be an additional charge.) By supporting this project you are both making it possible and owning a piece of it!
