About

Phoenix Theatre Works is Charlottesville's Newest Theatre Company! We specialize in small-scale productions performed in intimate venues. Through the use of local talent, both on stage and behind the scenes, we are extremely excited for the opportunity to help promote and advance the arts here in Charlottesville. We are currently in the early planning stages of what we hope will prove to be a successful non-profit arts organization and an important addition to this great city's existing arts community. Stay tuned for much more to come. We look forward to entertaining you in the months and years ahead.

Show Synopsis:

Jeff and Hunter, two struggling writers, hear about a new musical theatre festival. However, the deadline for submissions is a mere three weeks away. With nothing to lose, the pair decides to try to create something new with the help of their friends Susan, Heidi and Larry on the eighty-eights.

With the cast in place, Jeff and Hunter begin a conversation about what to write about. Eventually, Jeff suggests they write about what to write about. They make a pact to write up until the festival’s deadline and dream about the show changing their lives.

[title of show]—taken from the space on the festival’s application form which asks for the [title of show]—follows Hunter and Jeff and their friends on their journey through the gauntlet of creative self-expression. In the span of 90 minutes they write and perform their show at the festival and learn lessons about themselves as people, friends and artists.

[title of show] is, above all, a love letter to the musical theatre—a uniquely American art form—and to the joy of collaboration. The musical received a Tony Award® nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 2009.

Risks and challenges

As with any theatre company, especially one just starting out, ticket sales alone cover about one-half of the actual costs of mounting a full production. Between obtaining the rights to produce a show and renting performance and rehearsal space alone, the costs quickly pile up. If a theatre company hopes to compensate its cast and crew for their time and hard work, as we do, the financial struggles can become even more difficult. It is simply a fact that art can only exist when supported by generous donations from people like you. Help us to follow our passions and utilize our talents, and we will present to you a finished product of which everyone can be proud.
