ClayTales is an app whose graphics are created from clay art, which is transformed onto a tablet screen by digital photography.
ClayTales is an exciting story involving a mouse, frog, fox, bunny, wolf and bear that live together in an empty house in the woods. The graphics are created from clay art, which is transformed onto a tablet screen by professional photography.
Within the application settings, you are given the option of “read it to me” and “read it myself”. With “read it to me” option, words are individually high lighted as a voice reads the story out loud. If you should choose “read it myself” option, all animations will still be activated, although there will be no automated reader or high lighting of words. Interactive animation is made possible with the application by activating movement of animals and scenery (trees and flowers).
You are given an exciting opportunity to interact one on one with story characters by moving them around the screen in each scene. The story also encourages interaction with a hands-on puzzle and memory games when guessing which characters are in the little house.
Clay was the ideal choice for the application because not only is it original, it makes the graphics appear less digitally enhanced. We wanted to create an application that was farther from the norm of digital graphics and animations. As parents ourselves, we see our children using iPad applications (eBooks, games, etc.) that all look the same. The majority of these applications are developed through computer programs and resemble no sense art made by hand.
We are proud and excited to prove that an application for a tablet can be artsy, hand made and digitally stimulating simultaneously. Using clay creates a sense of originality, authenticity, and successful imperfection.
We think that using clay provides a tangible step-by-step process that may be unachievable when using only a computer for graphics. We were able to witness an ordinary pile of clay turn into an application on the tablet screen.
We discovered that working with your hands creates an imperfect perfect result. Small indents where the fingers were pressed into the clay are visible to the user. This creates a more natural appearance and evidence that time and effort was dedicated to each piece of clay on the iPad screen. Creating the scenes by hand also adds a true artistic appeal, from having the skills to create the characters to choosing the colors.
Using clay will appeal to children because they will feel more connected, as if they are playing with the characters throughout the story. It provides kids with the idea that they are playing with clay art themselves, throughout the story.
When choosing the story for our ClayTales app, the first thing that came to our minds was a Folktale. Folktales are important to families because they are classic due to being passed on from generation to generation. We wanted to give other families the chance to interact with this classic story. We wanted to introduce the older stories to the newest technologies. A folktale represents adorable memories from our childhood, which is eventually passed onto our own children.
The process was fun and exciting. We first began with sketching each scene in black and white. The scenes were done as rough sketches, efficiently to get our story rolling. After the scenes were sketched out, each character was drawn up with several different color variations. Once we had the colors of the characters and scenery chosen, we began with the clay. The characters were meticulously sculpted, with acute attention to detail by hand. After the characters were finished, the clay pieces were photographed with a DSLR in a dark room to achieve detailed photographs.
We do not want to provide you with just a book to read. We have created an experience that trains the mind to memorize with simple memory games. The memory games are incorporated at the end of each scene throughout the eBook. This also provides you with a more enthralling interactive reading experience.

We need your help to take this prototype out of beta mode and into a fully polished application where children will have seamless and enjoyable experience
We realized that we want to bring at least ten more of these cultural folktales to life. We need your help, and in order to make that possible please make a pledge today and we can bring these stories to life.
