STRETCH GOAL AND CUSTOM REWARD OPTIONS

Thank you! The Honeypot Collection is fully funded and ready for more ambitious goals. To help get us to a new funding goal of $20,000 I've added some rewards with a personalized touch! If you've already backed, you can change your pledge to upgrade and unlock:

  •  Unique Scarves, Pillows and Throws - BYO Malware or request from a TBD list of infamous samples downloaded from https://virusshare.com/
  •  Custom Living Room and Deck the Home Sets - have each piece in your set customized based on a malware sample you provide or request.

If you like what you see here and want to support more critical art in the field of cyber security, please continue to share with your friends, family and through your social networks.

A BRAVE NEW TEXTILE COLLECTION

Hello! I'm Phillip David Stearns, an artist living in Brooklyn and working in New York City. I setup some servers to capture malware in the wild to create Glitch Textiles' new Honeypot Collection. Each design renders the DNA of malicious software—computer viruses, Trojans horses, and worms—into woven soft wares.

As we increasingly rely on internet connected services in day-to-day life, cyber security is becoming a vitally important topic to understand at all levels. I'm making this new collection to create a unique perspective on cyber security and malicious software, bringing us in physical contact with material artifacts of cyber attacks: the malware that attackers drop on poorly secured devices.

I believe that multi-modal experiences of an idea, reality, or concept can help ground us and give us a reference point for dealing with more abstract issues, equipping the mind with unconventional tools for grasping the unknown.

WHO/WHAT IS GLITCH TEXTILES?

Glitch Textiles is a project I started in 2011 exploring the intersection of textiles and digital art. A successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 propelled me on a multi-year journey leading to projects with prestigious brands such as Dior, KENZO Paris, Le Bon Marché, Isetan Shinjuku, Steelcase, DesignTex and the New Museum.

Today, Glitch Textiles is still owned and operated as a solo project by yours truly.

HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA TO WEAVE MALWARE?

In 2017, I went deep researching cyber warfare, familiarizing myself with different groups conducting cyber operations (threat actors) through analysis of their tools, tactics and methods. Some of the reports I was reading were prepared by researchers who captured and reverse engineered malware samples from "honeypots", computers running software to make them appear vulnerable to attack.

My background is in sound art (2007 MFA Music Cal Arts!), so my first thought was to use the honeypots to draw fire to internet connected Raspberry Pis (tiny Linux computers) and translate the attacks into sound. I pitched this as a project to a festival and exhibited an evolved version of it this July. Instead of exposing the Pi's directly, I leased more than a dozen servers located around the globe and installed software on them to turn them into Honeypots.

I wasn't intending to capture the samples, it was just something the honeypots did by default. I wondered whether the samples looked as interesting as they sounded (gnarly and noisy, yeah!). Binary data visualization was something I'd done for Glitch Textiles designs in the past, so this was a no-brainer. The designs speak for themselves (and just beg to be woven!):

HOW DID YOU DO IT?

1.) I configured servers leased from cloud computing service providers to run Cowrie and Dionaea honeypot tools. They're designed to allow attackers to upload malware onto the server in an emulated and contained virtual environment where it's captured and quarantined.

2.) Next, the samples are uploaded to VirusTotal where they're identified by a detection scan and made available to the wider security community for review and examination.

3.) The samples are then decompressed, if necessary, and transformed into an image using DataViz, a tool I wrote in Processing:

4.) Finally, the images created from the samples are converted into a color palette that tells my team at Pure Country Weavers how their looms should intermix different colored yarns to create a blanket that has the code woven right into the design!

WHAT AM I SUPPORTING?

I created the Honeypot Collection with the goal of supporting my related work in this field. By backing this project, you're directly supporting projects like Open Vault, a speculative malware pop-up retail installation. It's the direct outcome of the research I started in 2017.

Imagine a used car lot but for after-market cyber weapons, wrapped in a vaporwave-esque reinterpretation of Comp USA. The Open Vault installation is a place where software boxes (yes software used to be bought in boxes in a store) become canvases for speculating on an alternate present where cyber weapons are sold openly to the general public.

I'm preparing to install Open Vault on Canal Street with WallPlay for a grand opening on October 7th. Some of the material needs include printing costs for software boxes, lighting, and retail display furniture.

The walls will be decorated with Honeypot Collection tapestries!

Here's a clear breakdown of where the funds will go:

  • 50% Supports Open Vault and continued operation of the honeypots
  • 30% Production and fulfillment of backer rewards
  • 20% Taxes on revenue from the campaign (sad but true)
  • 10% Fees to Kickstarter and Payment Processing

WHAT DO I GET FOR BACKING?

As a gift of gratitude for your generosity, there are rewards at a range of backing levels:

  • Your name on our funders wall for the Honeypot Collection webpage
  • Limited Edition Woven Scarf from the Honeypot Collection available only to backers
  • Limited Edition Throw Pillow from the Honeypot Collection available only to backers
  • A Throw Blanket from the Honeypot Collection
  • A set of two Honeypot Collection Blankets and three Honeypot Collection Pillows

You can also back for what ever amount you wish, with or without accepting the reward.

HOW ELSE CAN I HELP?

Spread the love by spreading the word. Share with your friends, family and social networks. Tip off your favorite blogs related to tech, design, textiles, and security. I think they'll get a kick out of this one ;)

THANK YOU!

Risks and challenges

Glitch Textiles has 8 years of experience working with a tried and true pipeline from digital art to textile goods. We work with only one weaver so while the quality consistency is assured, any delays they experience may impact reward delivery.

We're human too; which means sometimes, we make mistakes. If we got your reward wrong, let us know and we'll straighten things out.

Glitch Textiles will pack and ship all rewards with care, however, we cannot replace damaged, stolen, or missing rewards. Tracking information will be sent with reward fulfillment notices. In the event that a reward is missing, we'll provide any information we can to assist in your filing a claim with the shipping agent.

You are ultimately responsible for providing accurate shipping information and informing Glitch Textiles of any changes. We will not replace items sent to inaccurate addresses.
