Glitches in the cold, hard logic of digital circuits transformed into warm blankets, textiles, rugs, and more.
11 New Knit Blanket Designs available for the $375 reward! 13 Designs in all.
NEW FUNDING GOAL: $17,000
Thanks to a whopping heap of support, I've blown my original funding goal out of the water! I'm setting a new goal in order to extend my time at the TextielLab and create even more textiles. For the final 10-day stretch, I've lifted all the reward limits on prints and textiles. Let's break the 200% funding barrier!
Hi, I'm Phil Stearns, a Brooklyn based artist working with electronics and electronic media. I operate Year of the Glitch, a year-long glitch-a-day project, and have been actively creating electronic art since 2005.
My Glitch Textiles project developed from what began as a curious exploration of visual technologies through corrupting the hardware of digital cameras into a project exploring the design potential of digital glitches in the textile arts.
[Wait... art from glitches? Find out more!]
I started this Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds necessary to realize a new body of work for the Glitch Textiles project at the Audax Textielmuseum's TextielLab through their artist residency program. There are only a handful of places in the world offering access to computerized textile production equipment to independent artists. The TextielLab, in Tilburg, Netherlands, is one of these rare places where artists benefit from access to cutting edge equipment and expert designers/technicians to assist in the realization of their projects.
It is my hope that the beautiful vulgarity of vibrant colors and blatant disregard for following the rules that characterize much of glitch art can find its way into our everyday lives through textiles. The acts of rebellion signified through glitch art symbolize a rich cultural tradition of standing up to injustice, defying authority when it is morally corrupt, and defending the right of free expression. For this work to exist beyond the screen, makes it even more compelling and inspiring. Literally weaving tapestries from the digital detritus of our techno-culture will give context to our cultural legacy and help preserve the spirit of our times for future generations.
Funds will be applied to fees related to the residency, including: daily facility usage ($410/day), project assistance/consultation, materials ($100/square meter), airfare ($800), accommodation. The current goal reflects the funds needed for a week-long period and the production of 10 new works. Additional funding will increase the duration of my stay and the number of works I'll be able to produce.
As thanks for your support, I'm offering a range of gifts
