"WHY SHOULD I CARE ?"
This project is very special to me, it is my dream to be able to build surfboards and create art for a living. This project is about sharing the history of surfing which has been so influential in my upbringing. My father started surfing in 1962 and his father before him in the 1930's before he went to war in Europe. As the surf industry has become so huge over the past 50 years and the original California surfers are all but gone, I want to make sure that what they knew as surfing for the first 50 years in California will not be forgotten.
"WHAT DOES THE MONEY GO TO ?"
With your pledges you help me to firmly establish my dream, by giving me the means to make these historic pieces of art. I will be using the funds for tools, building materials, rent for a gallery and most importantly WOOD! One of the biggest innovations in surfing was the switch from solid redwood to using redwood and balsa wood. Large pieces of balsa wood are very difficult to obtain and can only be ordered from South America, so most of the funds donated will go to purchasing wood from there.
"WHAT MAKES YOUR BOARDS DIFFERENT?"
My surfboards are different for a few reasons. Firstly and most obviously my boards are all hand made out of various woods! Redwood, Balsa, Century Plant, Cedar, Eucalyptus, the list goes on. I would use any wood that is beautiful, durable, light , and unique. I want to make boards ranging from modern styles, to the longboards of the 1950's and 60's, all the way back to ancient Hawaiian designs.
Secondly, I am trying to bring the past alive. The vintage style I am recreating is a part of surfing's rich history that has often been forgotten. The surfing planks I am making have a deep historical significance to Hawaii and California and this could be a wonderful opportunity to see the beautiful classic "slide" brought back to the ocean.
Lastly, although much of my focus is on these early fin-less boards, I am also experimenting with local woods from California and abroad to change the perception of what a modern surfboard has to be. By using renewable and light woods I am trying to find an alternative to the environmentally UN-friendly poly-urethane blanks that have been so commonly used for the past fifty years.
"I DON'T SURF ."
That's okay! You don't need to surf to appreciate the beauty of a wooden surfboard. If you are looking for something to add a little flare to your home or business and want to give it that California feel then this would be perfect for you. Maybe you want to hang it on the wall of your house, or you have a classic car that is missing something. Regardless, a wood surfboard is sure to turn heads.
"ARE YOU ECO-FRIENDLY ?"
We are extremely eco-friendly with a barely-there environmental impact. Almost all of our redwood is reclaimed from houses being torn down here in San Diego, and Balsa wood grows naturally in South America and matures very quickly (only a couple of years to fully mature). The only waste from making the surfboards and surfing-planks is wood dust! The only time any harmful chemicals are used is when more traditional surfboards are made using fiberglass and resin.

Risks and challenges
UP STREAM - SUPPLY CHAIN
Balsa Wood: After thoroughly searching I have found a supplier of balsa wood straight from the source in Ecuador. I have obtained the necessary permits for importing timber and thankfully I have experience with the importing process.
Redwood, Eucalyptus, and Cedar: Over the past year I have worked with local contractors to obtain reclaimed woods from historic buildings here in San Diego.
Century Plant / Agave: This type of wood is difficult to obtain; the plants grow naturally here in Southern California on steep hillsides and canyon walls. I personally hunt and cut these down for each board that I make. You will see the additional cost of labor reflected in the price below.

My hope is to raise enough money to allow me to open a gallery to display and sell my work here in La Jolla. Being that this venture is a low volume/high profit margin project, it will be crucial for me to treat these pieces as a body of work. That being said, the gallery will have a traditional art opening for every new body of work created. Each collection will contain between ten and twenty pieces.
