MAY 11 – Thanks to all of you, today we are 101% Funded! Still, 10 days to go. So what do we have to add to the project? Something pretty exciting!! Since we know the Kickstarter project is going to succeed we are proceeding with plans for the two backers who earned a live concert in the venue of their choice. The first date has been set – June 22, 2013 – and the concert will take place in Fair Oaks, California (next to Sacramento).
Joe will be playing tunes from the new 2013 “All the Roads” CD. Plus we are also inviting three other people we’ve met through Kickstarter to play at the concert: Matt Phillips, Wilda Mendez & Debbie Clinkenbeard. We are offering them each a fee for their appearance and nothing is confirmed yet, but that is our plan. Also, well-established musician, Ira Walker, will be at the concert – helping with the technical side and, hopefully, playing a few tunes.
You can secure tickets for this event at a reduced rate now by upping your pledge by $10 per ticket ($20 per couple).
The second venue will also be in Northern California – probably in Napa, Sonoma or St. Helena – we are not sure yet and we don’t have a date, but it will be in the summer of 2013. You can use your ticket for either concert, which gives you some flexibility in scheduling.
To produce and distribute a music CD that is a collaboration between two Joe Dynan’s. For the 24 year-old Joe Dynan living in Santa Cruz, this will be his debut CD. His music will be his own and includes songs based on the work done by his late uncle, Joe Lee Dynan. Joe Lee died at the age of 20, killed by a drunk driver while Joe was on his way to sign a record deal with Columbia Records. He left behind a catalog of 75 songs, 5 albums and volumes of poetry that were believed to have been destroyed 40 years ago. But his music and lyric catalog were recovered this year, almost 40 years to the date of his death and the nephew he never knew is now producing music based on his uncle’s albums. Their music is very much on the same path. I believe their collaboration will be something that will provide entertainment and enjoyment for thousands of people. Young Joe already has 5000 followers on Soundcloud.
The first step in this process was recovering, restoring and remastering the original music by the late Joe Lee, This involves transferring the reel2reel tapes to digital, mixing and mastering the songs to modern standards. You can hear some of the music at www.soundcloud.com/plainair . Next, Santa Cruz Joe is producing an all original CD based on the original concepts. You can hear some of his music at www.joedynan.com . While the CD is being produced over the next year, we will also be preparing a fully illustrated /project lyric book that will part of the project and available to supporters.
The money is going to be used to produce two CD’s – one is the brand new, completely fresh, debut CD, All the Roads, by singer-songwriter Joe Dynan - the other is the Vintage Album, first produced in 1970, now completely remastered by Luke Gilfeather, audio restoration and mastering engineer in Nashville. Money goes for restoration, digitising & mastering the original music; producing the new CD’s including recording, mixing, mastering, and producing the CD and lyric book, publicity and production expenses.
Specifically, the budget includes $2500 for recording new music; $1200 for related software; $1500 for mastering that music; $3000 for the restoration and mastering of the previously “lost” music by Joe Lee; $500 for making the CDs; $500 for promotion, design, & printing CD cases & liners, etc.; $1000 for advertising this project; $2500 for artists and publishing the project book; $350 for t-shirt production, $500 for the ipad; and $100 for 2 MP3 players. Mandatory fees for this project amount to roughly $1000. Total budget is roughly $ 14, 650. If we reach our goal, we have already committed to the other $4,100 of the budget. But we need your help to finance the rest.
The project is already in motion. So far, five of the vintage albums have been professionally digitised. Santa Cruz Joe is already working on the new CD and has two cuts separated into stems and ready for mastering. Art for the illustrated lyric book is being done by a group of artists, with the Vintage CD lyrics and the modern CD lyrics getting completely different treatments. The project is expected to be completed by March 2013 and the new CD’s released in April 2013.
You & The Rest of the Team:
The team behind this project includes about 10 people in different capacities. I’m the sort of “bridge” between everyone. My late brother, Joe Lee Dynan, composed and produced most of his music while living with me in Chicago. Our sister, Denise Dynan, is also a huge part of the current project and will be sponsoring a live concert in Sonoma next year. And it is my son, Santa Cruz Joe, that is producing his first CD. I’m a working artist(www.phildynan.com) and also a “bridge” to the other artists working on the Lyric Book. Aside from that, I am responsible for the conversion & modern mastering of Joe Lee’s work; and for publishing the Illustrated Lyric Book for the All the Roads CD’s (Vintage and New Original versions).

We are a team, working together, and while that is very comforting, we truly need you to join our team to make this project work. This is a project spanning 40 years, with plenty of challenges and we hope you will be a part of it, with whatever contribution you feel works for you. And we all want to Thank You for any and all support!
If we reach the “overfunding stage” the extra money will be used for two primary purposes: (1) to finish remastering Joe Lee’s other four albums and produce the CD’s; and (2) to launch Joe’s performance tour in the US and promote his CD and Tour.
