About this project
Who's Talking about Phantom Frames:
"If you want your kids to be extra safe without looking like dweebs, get them these." -Drew Prindle, Digital Trends
"When I was little, my bike had a sparkly white banana seat. I thought I was the epitome of cool. I was wrong. The Phantom Frames kids' bikes on Kickstarter are cooler." -Amanda Kooser, c|net

Phantom Frames Hitting the Streets
Phantom Frames was created from the imagination of my son, Jack. In January of 2011, the rear light on his bicycle stopped working. While shopping for a replacement, he said it would be great if his whole bike could light up. I told him he had a great idea and we should try building one!
The first step was to figure out if this was even possible. So I got together with local bike designer Ken Spaulding, bought some used bikes and began cutting them up and designing with them. After two months of testing we ended up using polycarbonate fitted with LEDs to create our first prototype.
After a lot of trial and error we were finally able to develop the frame we dreamed about. We filed for a US utility patent based on the use of the frame a “pipeline” for the light and with that Phantom Frames was created. Jack loved it and I was a happy dad.
That could have easily been the end of the story, except that the following month, Jack brought the prototype to his school for a science fair. The reaction to the bike by everyone who saw it was overwhelming. They all wanted one! We knew then that we had to make this an actual product.
Our focus then changed to manufacturing on a larger scale. We used our contacts in the cycling and manufacturing industry to develop a plan where we can mold the frames and the inserts in a way to make these affordable for everyone.
We then sampled and tested no less than 10 modified versions of the frame. We tested different LED bulb colors and options, including flashing lights and various bulb intensities. We also tested frames with bead blast surfaces versus clear surfaces to check the affect on light output. This is how we came up with what we call the "Ghost" frame.
So now we had the basis for a complete line of LED Bikes, but we needed to make sure they were ready for prime time...
Testing, Testing and More Testing:
These are more than just fancy bikes. Molded out of High-Impact polycarbonate plastic, they are ready for adventure... any time of day. Every frame has been stress tested to give you the peace of mind that Phantom Frames are not only awesome, but can stand up to the high demands of an active kid.
16" Machined Polycarbonate Frame
Two Customized "Light Pipe" Inserts, each powered by four AAA Batteries (Not Included)
Anodized Aluminum Wheels
High Quality Rubber Grips
Night and Day:
Our "Light-Pipe" technology makes Phantom Frames shine at any time of day! While they are at their best when sun is about to set, our translucent frames are like nothing else on the road, giving kids the ability to shine all afternoon.
Lend us a Hand:
After several runs of prototypes and testing, we were able to put together a final product.
Now all we need is your help to make these incredible bikes a reality for a kid in your life.
Please help us bring Phantom Frames to fruition by supporting us with a pledge! In addition to the funds we have raised through family, friends and our own wallets, the $10,000 we are seeking will help us meet the cost in order to build complete production mold sets as well as fund tooling for a full production run!

Risks and challenges
Phantom Frames has planned for every possible outcome of this campaign, from concrete budget planning, to designing and building prototypes. All of the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed on our end. You will always be kept in the loop; in the unlikely chance that there is a manufacturing issue, we will strive to insure that you receive your rewards in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We are manufacturing and selling the entire bike!
While there is no definitive age range that this frame is suited for, the average age would be 4-7 years old. With training wheels, we have had kids as young as 2 riding just fine. And as you can see in the video, my 10 year old son is still having a blast on the prototype. It all depends on the size and skill of the rider more than anything else.
As an added note, we hope to expand our product line after we gain funding for our initial release. Gauging from the response we've received here on Kickstarter, there's no doubt that folks of all ages would love to light up their rides!
